crucial point here is that the mix is already very clean, crisp and balanced before going into the analog chain (massive props to you dude), it's not a way to fix issues if the mix is unbalanced/muddy/flat etc.

Sounds great. A little bit goes a long way, compounding from one unit to another in the chain really adds up. It's so obviously different when bypassed. Every time you hit the bypass on the whole chain, the whole life of the song got sucked out and was immediately apparent. It's something that is hard to tell for the average listener when it's there, but obvious when it's not. Found this because looking at adding in the 542 stereo pair for my mix bus. Great video, thanks!

You're missing out not using Mid/Side mode on that insert! It can be magic. I actually put my 542's and EQ in there. Amazing the character you can impart (if you want). For the most part, I have a very similar setup as you. The Elisia filter 500 sometimes goes at the very end of my chain or before (I'm always fiddling). In addition, I run a SPL BiG for my widening/cool Bass circuit. I also run my entire mix first through a tube pre-amp. Great demo. Thanks for sharing!

I definitely want to invest in some 500 series gear. It seems like such a great way to get a compact and relatively affordable analog chain. Obviously you have to get a chassis, but even those don't seem too pricey. I was listening to a Nashville producer, and he was talking about how he records in the box but sends the whole mix out through a pair of linked preamps. I'd love to do something like that just to get some coloration on my mixes. I'm not going to do any of that until I perfect the acoustic treatment in my room, though.
@spinlightstudios

500 series is great, I had a whole bunch more but ended up selling off a bit of gear over the last 2 years, culled it back to what I use often. I’ve heard a few people talk about running mixes through preamps for some Colour. It’s not a bad idea at all, would give it some console vibes.

Cool breakdown! I have something similar going on. The 542's going into the fusion, with maag eq4's on the inserts so i can try both stereo or m/s, often put them pre eq to sort of massage some of the highs with the hf com when boosting that air band. From the fusion i run into wes audio dione or the rhea. Depending on the material i might pop in the drawmer 1974 before or after the comp for the filters ( i find the ones on the fusion a bit too drastic) or some high mid boost to open things up

Thanks for a great detailed video. Do you do this process to finalise a mix before getting your track mastered? Or do you do this process to finalise your mix as an in-house style master?

For me, this is still part of the mixing process, just getting your mix to sounds as finished as possible.

Greetings, Amazing video, but I have a few questions. Is there a reason you eq and comp prior to the ssl fusion? Most people would use the eq (in midside) using the ssl fusion and comp after the ssl. Do you find that you get a better sound with your workflow? Did you wire the units to a patchbay or do you have them wired in series directly into each other as a fix chain?
@spinlightstudios
@spinlightstudios Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Each unit is sent to my patch bay, but I have them set to half normal and cascading into one another so I don’t actually have to patch them in to each other every time I want to use my mix bus, but I can also then use each unit individually if desired. I think of the ssl fusion as a finisher/mastering style processor, which would come after my standard mix bus EQ/comp. This arrangement has worked really well for me and I have never felt the need to place the ssl earlier in my chain! I’m sure it would sound fine earlier though! Thanks for watching mate!

These ‘rules’ may work for you, but I suspect you are making great mixes to be so confident about the buss processing. For any mix, by anyone, done poorly, the buss process will do absolutely nothing to fix it. Certainly some of your viewers will fall in that category and end up thinking the right piece of gear is all that is stopping them making a living.
@spinlightstudios
@spinlightstudios 4 ай бұрын
Hey man! I mean, you could say the same about anything - plugins too! I’m not trying to sell anyone on hardware here, just sharing what I use on my mix bus - I didn’t own any hardware for years, definitely recommend getting confident with plugins and mixing and then dive into the hardware world when you’re ready. Crap in - crap out - doesn’t matter about the gear.
@artysanmobile

@@spinlightstudios I didn’t for a minute think you’re selling anything, hardware or software. But you’re promoting an idea that the inexperienced may think is their solution. @@spinlightstudios There is a narrative here that “fill in blank” reliably fixes “fill in problem” in music making. I’m not dumb to how the marketplace functions but the comments reveal a large watching audience who clearly isn’t understanding.
