Watching films like these can always be intimidating because of lack of context or even just the content being so much more intelligent than you can grasp. And yet I was intrigued by Theo’s films, the first of which I saw was Eternity and a Day, then this. Thank for you for this video, this helps a lot. Will have to revisit this film again in the future!

Angelopoulos definitely sits among the pantheon of great directors. The rape scene in Landscape in the Mist is especially shocking. Looking forward to the next part.

Incredible video essay yet again. Angelopoulos is undoubtedly one of the absolute greatest, a true poet and one of the very few I'd dare compare to Tarkovsky. Love all his films but Eternity and a Day is my favourite.

Great stuff! Just saw this as my first Angelopoulos, couldn’t help but be reminded of Antonioni by the strangeness and incomprehensible nature of the adult world as it appears to Voula and Alexandros

Hey, glad you've enjoyed the video! There is some affinity between Antonioni and Angelopoulos, no doubt, both in terms of style and content. In other Angelopoulos films there's also a strong sense of inadequacy, incommunicability, emotional unavailability, and other aspects. Thanks for the comment!

THE GREAT ANGELOPOULOS One of my very favorite (just like his "Traveling Players" one of the best films ever made IMHO) Such a pity that his films are not yet transferred in HD and that someone should know a lot of modern Greek history in order to fully undrestand his work.. Looking forward to Part 2 and maybe other films too :)

I share with you a deep fondness for Angelopoulos' art, and I find The Travelling Players to be one of the greatest films of all time as well. Very unfortunate he hasn't been given the privilege of having his films transfered to HD, whilst so many unremarkable film go through that process everyday. Part 2 is currently being written, should come out sometime in April. Thanks for the interest and for sharing your thoughts!

@ there are a lot of movie channels on youtube, many either chase trends (which make them all homogenous) or offer such shallow understandings of the medium and form, making them quite unwatchable. it really shows the difference between a cinephile and someone who just likes movies. you being the former. would also like to thank you for your video on "the cranes are flying" it became my favourite film, and also lead me to other russian filmmakers like parajanov. would love to see something on youssef chahine. anyway, sending thanks from london.

I found the two unknown cyclists clad in yellow rain coats on bicycles, enigmatic . They also appeared in a scene in 'Eternity and a Day'.

They appear in several of Angelopoulos films, The Suspended Step of the Stork too, and they have specific symbolism which I'll explore later on.

Whatever symbolism they might carry...they themselves look so ......mystic. They had their own beauty in an inexplicable way. Tarkovsky also explored things in his films which are beautiful in their own way. Critics later themselves made symbolism and metaphors. That's why according to Tarkovsky his films were best understood by children who don't judge or conclude.

@@feriwaala6316 Yes, that's very true, but in Angelopoulos, these men either perform specific tasks, or appear in thematically connected moments of the same nature. Once one understands that, the meaning of their appearance, together with the intrinsic beauty and appeal of their presence, acquires an even greater power. Cheers.

Do Angelopoulos vi há algum tempo o "Eternity and a day" não liguei muito, hoje calhou de ver o "Landscape in the mist" e adorei o filme, tenho de ver mais filmes dele. O vídeo está muito bem executado e o canal tem conteúdo muito bom, continuação.

It makes me absolutely happy tou read your comments and all the others about Angelopoulos and Karaïndrou. Since I am living in Canada I was able to make some people to listen to the soundtracks too and to embrace it, like I do. @
