I've been so tempted by this stuff. My kid is getting into sculpting lately and I think this would be so useful for learning and practicing with. You sold me on in it. I think either Santa or myself might be bringing it this year...

You could also try digitally scanning the finished sculpture and doing a clean up in a 3D program. People provide those types of services. Then you wouldn't be damaging your original.

Monster Clay has been a game changer for me in sculpting figures for my cuckoo clocks. I'm able to sculpt a size in which I can attain detail, then I scan and 3D print any size I want. For the Bald Eagle cuckoo for my Old Glory Cuckoo Clock I could never have carved an eagle head like that at such a tiny size. I came to You Tube to look for tips on smoothing the clay as I'm working on a family for a Stuckey's Cuckoo Clock. Your tips helped me tremendously. I'm so grateful for your video!

I’ve been using Monster Clay for years and LOVE it. That said, I use a hot box I made with a lamp to warm the clay instead of using a microwave or oven. Because I believe they make it like a soup if you get distracted. I also use a alcohol lamp for my tools to smooth the clay out for amazing details. All in all, Monster Clay rocks!

I'm so sorry for not responding earlier, as I've been traveling oversees and am not online a lot when I travel. But, Monster clay never dries, because it's a oil-based elastic clay, similar to wax. But there are 3 different grades of hardness, Soft, Medium and Hard.@@skygameslife2579

I Actually made more of a Carving Wax out of it, i got the Hard kind and then added 15% by Volume Caranuba wax to it. "you can add up to 25%, but im not sure if i would add more than that. it makes it ROCK hard.

Have you ever tried mixing the hard and medium, or brown and gray, to see what color and consistency comes out of it? I've done that with super sculpey and sometimes get some useful blends for certain types of projects.

I have only used air dry clay and am about to use the Hard grey monster clay. Can you explain how it works if you sculpt over a few days and want to change something that is already cooled on the sculpture (like if you wanted your horses leg to be bent more) could you just use a blow dryer to warm it a little and then rebend the sculpt or would the surface just get soft and the leg be stuck in the position it was? (or maybe even snap off)
@DeeJayBeStudios
@DeeJayBeStudios Жыл бұрын
That’s exactly what you would do yes! A hair dryer is just enough heat to soften it nicely. A torch or a heat gun would make things really gooey. It’s wonderful stuff that way, that it’s able to be modified.
@teegees
@teegees 5 ай бұрын
Super informative thank you! Seeing this I wonder why the soft or even medium version exist, right? I mean if you can soften it for molding, don’t you want your shape to hold as much as possible once you’re done shaping? And then if you want to make any modifications you just soften it up again with heat. So it seems like getting the hard version is a no-brainer. Or am I missing something?
@DeeJayBeStudios
@DeeJayBeStudios 5 ай бұрын
Yeah I’m not sure, I had the same question. The soft is very soft. Maybe for people with weaker hands? I’m sure there is a use somewhere.

Tell me, please, if I will sculpt from “hard”, how strong is the finished figure? I need to transport it for scanning. Is it really possible to do this? Maybe I need to cool it down a lot or put something cold next to it and take it in a refrigerator bag by taxi to the scanner? I am afraid that the details will be destroyed 👀
@DeeJayBeStudios
@DeeJayBeStudios Ай бұрын
I use Medium, and it stays firm, but definitely melts quickly in the heat. It’s easy to knick & dent. The Hard would be better. You would want to package the sculpture in a manner that allows nothing to touch it.

Does it harden?
@mudbucket1354
@mudbucket1354 7 ай бұрын
it "hardens" as needed for mold making but does not harden in the way air-dry clay would. it's meant to be used over again so it retains flexibility. when heated it's stretchy and firms up when cold

Im wondering the same thing. Whats the point of clay that never hardens? What if u wanted to sculpt something to spray paint and put up in your room. Would u not be able to do that with this clay? Or should i just use air dry clay instead?
@aimsanimations2905

@@angiet9801 from what I’ve gathered from other videos, it doesn’t harden permanently, but enough that one could make a silicone mold - though that is very pricy

Is the packaging some sort of commentary on Star Trek characters? Its called Monster Clay, and the character that is largest on the packaging is Spock. It can't be a copyright thing or anything, because vampires or werewolves aren't trademarked properties. They just hate Spock. Highly illogical.
