Magic: the Gathering has yet to provide us with any four mtg color pie based set, and that always bugged me as someone who spends so much time talking about the color pie. So I decided I would take it into my own hands, and so inspired by the composition of the Shards of Alaraa I built five Planes each comprised of only four colors of mana, but I wasn't done there. Satisfied with the worlds I had built I wanted to dig a little deeper, and so followed that video up with two more, each discussing what factions would populate those Planes. This video is a compilation of that series, to help bring to life that which Magic could not give us. So if you love playing with ideas in Magic, are interested in world building for dnd or just love stories then this video is for you! Sit back and be prepared to be transported to new worlds!

That's what I thought too. On Dracorium, various clans form in the uncessant warfare. Eventually one warlord could absorb multiple lesser clans, gaining enough land, manpower and resources to start building a somewhat stable, walled nation where culture can develop. On Aracelis, everything seems to foreshadow coming change. And it will be a big change. Therefore the people living there might need to adopt completely new ideas in order to survive and thrive in the coming era. On Luminesca, the fact that some people are being executed for breaking the Father's law implies that there are people who want independence and freedom of choice. If they cannot act in the light, they will develop in the shadows. Perhaps they already are. On Mythoria, tensions are building between the various social groups. All it takes is one man finally deciding to throw an incendiary bottle into a formation of riot enforcers, and all hell will be let loose. On Aethex Prime, life still thrives after the cataclysm, albeit changed. New forms of life adapt to the harsh environment, though this time they're silicon-based, rather than carbon-based. Dice Try said that this series was supposed to be an experiment. The results of the experiment show us that the color pie seeks balance and wholeness, for it represents the entirety of the universe, from the very basics to the complicated nuances. And just as the Shards of Alara eventually reformed into one, so too will the missing colors reappear in the Broken Planes.

High-tech only sounds a bit too mono-blue... I would add high-nechromancy and geomancy to the mix, an ordered world where the creations have replaced their creators, where stone golems and necro-abominations and artifacts built by long-lost races roam the earth organized by strict hierarchies, obeying the rules their creators imposed on them before going extinct, forever unchanging in the absence of growth and nurture... A world that is already dead but keeps moving, waiting for decay to run its course: now you have my attention ^^

I like to think there could be a storyline where 5 people aligned with each missing color are born into the planes, slowly bringing that color into the planes and slowly combining the planes together White brings hope to the world Blue brings progress to the world Black doesn't necessarily need to bring evil. Rather, could bring ideas of living life outside of the norm, Ambition Maybe the white aligned higher up is evil, to stuck to the law and harshly punishes those who oppose. Black could break apart from this and shed light on the corruption Red could bring love and music Green brings inspiration to heal the world around them

I feel like there are still gaps that can be filled with these five planes. On Dracorium and Mythoria this is simple, just make two groups for the remaining colour pairs on each (Black/Red and Blue/Green on Dracorium and Black/White and...Also Blue/Green for Mythoria) On Luminesca you have Pairs that represent those organizations that defer to two of the Keepers. On Aethex Prime, you have forms of "Life" other than the Stonekin which have arisen from the interactions of different colors of Mana. Like great veins of Red Mana deep within the plane that tear out of the ground in the Deserts, the Oceans and within Mother. I'm not sure about the history of the Pairs that could form on Aracelis, most likely they exist as bridges between the different traditions on the plane With the Pairs that form with Black this is an understanding that the dead are still a part of the great cycle of the world (Black/Green) still just as much a part of the family as anyone else (Black/White) and still have some place in the festivals (Black/Red)

For example, I feel a WUBR plane would be very different where nature itself would feel unnatural to someone from an outside perspective. Maybe shifting landscapes, and creatures that dont follow standard or consistent natural forms.

This is a neat video. I did a similar concept but opted for city-states, e.g. Theros, as the determining factors for the 4 color identities. My thought process was: Ravnica = Guild Districts Alara/Tarkir = Shards/Clans 4CLR = Nations So a WUBR nation would be industrialised with 1 - 4 color cards being city members, monsters, or legendaries.

I find it interesting how the disappearance of a color causes more of an imbalance than the absence of 2 colors. In a world with lack of white, black and red rain supremely. A world with lack of blue is rained by red and green.

With how interesting this plane-cluster is i couldn't help but wonder how it came to be, and i have a neat idea: it was shattered. For it was an ancient planeswalker, born far before the mending, who's name is lost to time, found his home plane in the path of many powerful eldrazi. so many were they that not even the power of a pre-mending planeswalker could stop them, that the nameless hero had to do something else, something desperate. An interesting habit of the eldrazi is that in their search for mana-rich planes they will ignore sources of mana that do not express all colours, as there is not likely to be any abundance of it where all five are not present. Learning of this, this ancient knew what he had to do, he split his home in five at the cost of his life. Turning the jewel that was his love into five orbiting fragments, with nothing but a manaless husk in the centre, an archive of his work so that a future planeswalker could find his work and heal his home.

An intriguing concept for having 4 color planes but if we were to fit the design of a set maybe have the absent color be the only card in the set that is printed as a monocolor with a minuscule amount of mixing in between. Would be make sure that the set includes all 5 colors without interfering with the flavor of a 4 color plane as the mono colored cards are in stark contrast to the already mixed colors of mana on the plane itself

I love it. now I want to see your take on tarkir, or a wedges set of some flavor, where they didn’t chicken out and actually made the wedges centered on the color pairing up with its enemies. for example, why would blue partner with red green? well, blue is the color of perfection, maybe they noticed how antithetical to what blue is red and green are, yet they seem to have deep understandings that blue doesn’t. so, they were like “how can we claim to be perfect without that?” Or the faction realized how unhappy and isolated being pure blue made them, so they added red green to fix that problem. Basically, there would be a strong accentuation of reds less chaotic side, showing red as emotional intelligence allowing you to be there for people. but it would also be shown as a metric for betterment, allowing people to say “is it really better if it reduces overall happiness?” green would then be shown via its interconnected community side. green would teach wisdom, allowing people to see that certain improvements might break the currently functional system. it would also help people realize that certain improvements aren’t worth it if it makes you more isolated in the end. I dunno, it’s just an idea.

So here’s some ideas as I see these Planes like Alara but they only lost a single mana. So they are slowly coming back together, but since it’s not a Nicol Bolas figure doing this, it has a less extremity to its urgency for balance. But what provokes each world is something that has or currently happens during the story. Like in Dracorium, there were actually 5 dragons, but once the world began to divide the white mana dragon was lost to let’s say what is now Luminesca. In Aerocelis, the change that the Autumn Accordance is predicting is the reformation of the planes into one big plane again. As for Luminesca, a person is picked to be the new keeper of knowledge, and their knowledge of the secrets kept from the people, allows them to eventually connect them to a “resistance group” in the plane to expose the brainwashing of the other keepers, or maybe their just a student who accidentally stumbled upon the forbidden knowledge it still goes that route. In Mythoria, a young worker, has a run in with a kind person only to learn they are part of the Collective, which makes them start to rethink how the world as they knew it has been progressing. And in Aether Prime, maybe one of the stone kins, stumble upon a cave that talks about another stone kin, that of green, and it is not here. Causing it to go back to the others of its tribe, to tell of this news. Then as the worlds merge, our hero(es) of Dracorium defeats the main villain with the help of the returned White mana Dragon, the hero(es) of Aerocelis discover what the Accordance have found out, the hero(es) of Luminesca ultimately uproot the oppression of the world just as black mana seeps into the plane, in Mythoria the hero(es) here too remove their oppressive regime and with the few help of the uprising group from Luminesca try to solidify some compassion and reveal the truth of the first trial which was discovered to be the decision of no one to be emotional anymore, and Aethex Prime run into their lost fellow stone kin which was in Aerocelis the whole time. What do y’all think?

Here is a thought. What if a plane were to be constructed off a card from another franchise? What if we expanded that to three cards one for life, one for structure, and one for theme? One creature, one land, one spell. What if Aurorus was one of the founding cards? What plane would result from that?

As an aside, should these planes really be in "the magic _set_ we never got"? Singular? Watching these videos and the detail to be found on each plane makes me think it'd be best to give each one it's own 4-color set in a 5-set pseudo-block, rather than be an Alara situation. To emphasize the 'missing mana' twist on things; each set could only have 4 basic lands, with some 6-card cycles of dual lands. Other lands might also sooner list all for existing colors before they'd ever say that can produce mana of any color, because there is always one color that no land in the set can ever produce. Though with Palneswalkers and Omenpaths, there could still be instances of the missing color of mana appearing on cards. But I think it'd make sense if each such instance would have that mana be 2-brid. That'd make, say, white cards playable when drafted in a set with no planes, while flavorfully making it harder to cast while compensating for the lack of the color. (I've thought a lot about how these sets might work mechanically if you can't tell.)

Repost of a repost. Something ive noticed about every plane that we (as players) visit: they're all broken, stagnant, or dying. Theyre all right, mid-story. Like we got there as a turning point was happening. Every time we visit a new plane, it isnt to show off that plane as a standalone force: its to introduce it to the whole of the multiverse. My thought is that Tarkir likely mandated the timeshift and resurgence of the dragons. Its how Narset awoke her spark, afterall. Thats another consistency: we only get to see a plane after they already have a planeswalker. Either wotc is that good, or there is more at play with how this lore is developed over time.

I think what makes designing an actual set around 4 colors is the sheer scope it'd require. From my experience colors start to become problematic to build around at 4 colors. 3 colors offers enough variety to build a ton of decks and so once you get to 4 colors you likely start to rely a lot on cards that generate any type of mana at which point you can just go WUBRG. Then there is also the fact that basically every single color is basically in 4 different factions.
@GiftOfKnowledge-np9vg
@GiftOfKnowledge-np9vg 4 ай бұрын
I beleive that revelation was what started this project originally. DiceTry explained why there's not a lot of 4-color stuff in Magic; both decks and factions start getting same-y with at at least 75% in common with each other. But when everyone started saying 4-color things are defined by what they lacked; DiceTry found that while you can't easily make 4-color factions, you can make 4-color planes and explore the factions there-in. In the same vein; that's also why I think they that rather than being one set Alara style with a bunch of 4-color cards to build 4-color decks; this should instead be a pseudo-block of 5 4-color sets that can produce some less-than-4-color decks. (Although of course a small handful of 4-color cards per set wouldn't be _unwelcome._ Just while we're exploring the combination.)

Making a hole set of one of those planes with a manatype missing would be problematic, same goes for all planes at once, but what of the missing mana isn't missing but just weaker than the rest. Like whith youre idea of Planes dominated by a color, but the exact opposite. Here the weaker color is missing one of its core Themen or is so weak it gets distorted by the other colors. How would a faction with the weaker color look like then? Or how would the mana express itself on the planes? Maybe you could implement this idea in the five planes and its faction, you already created so beatifully.
@CrazzyWarrior
@CrazzyWarrior 2 ай бұрын
Oh. What if the missing color wasn't just missing but had been suppressed to the point it was nearly extinct. This could lead into a block. First set is as you have. Then second set could be the missing trying to revive on the plane and how the rest would fight against it's return since it would threaten the known way of life they have known for so long. Then maybe 3rd set being a unification or eradication of the color. Story wise it could be cool, design wise maybe a bit harder.

What further lore would there need to be to "fit" the planes together, or alternatively what measures would need to be taken to have sets work without certain manas. With that call to action at the end of your video here... there's a lot of directions that can these concepts can go in.

I think it'd be easier to make 5 sets without the missing mana than make one set of 5 4-color planes work. (I mean it'd be a commitment on imaginary WotC's end, but if they are imaginary then lets imagine they're being creative and daring for a bit.) The measures to make it work for each would probably be relatively simple per set: -Lands wouldn't be too hard to figure out; just put only 4 basic lands in, same for cycles of 1 color or if we're daring for 3-color lands, 6-land cycles of any 2-color lands, and maybe there could be 1 land each set that'd go out of its way to list the 4 colors of its set in place of "mana of any color" just to flavorfully emphasize how the missing mana is simply not formed on that plane. -And the easiest way to get the rest of the cards to work is to simply, well, not have the missing mana symbol on any of the spells. -Although if we want to be interesting: I could see a small handful of cards per plane that represent Planeswalkers or Omenpath travellers with the missing color, but to make them playable if drafted and also for further favlor, any instance of the missing mana symbol is 2-brid mana. Sshow how these inter-planer travellers can adapt without their prefered mana, but they do struggle with it and it means their spells cost more as a result. -And beyond that stuff regarding individual cards; the sets would seemingly 6 archetypes instead of 10 but give more cards per archetype to hopefully make them more interesting and and flexible. Hopefully that'd average out to still be a fun set to play with. So yeah, getting a 4 color set to work wouldn't be too hard I think. The only really hard part is daring to get it to work 5 times.

Even with 3 color themed sets, having to ensure all decks don't j turn into 5 color good stuff is a real issue (as if a set includes mana fixing to allow 3 color decks, it almost certainly also allows mana fixing for more than that). Four color would multiply the issue massively. (Inversely, if you do a like 5-set block with each set dealing with a different plane, as well as that being utterly absurdly long for a block, it has the issue that the draft environment would be utterly terrible: a set with only 4 colors in it means that anyone who really likes playing that color are out of luck, you are stuck with almost half the number of possible 2 color archetypes, and there would likely be very large gaps in what can be done unless you're willing to fill these sets with an absurd number of bends / breaks)

Definitley one of the most interesting channels on the platform, I've followed your videos for many years. Dissapointed by the use of generative AI, when you are given the opportunity to share so much fantastic fantasy art created by humans. I hope you stray away from using as not only is it visually unpleasent, it stems from uncredited theft of other artists.

TBH, they don't do 4 color planes mainly for a balance perspective. I feel Wizards can expand 4 color identities in supplemental sets, mainly commander. IIRC they make 4 color commanders once, and never again.

They don't want to make a 4 elemental expansion because WoTC already did it, it's a dead mtg inspired game called "Hecatomb"... Could be an amazing video if you talk about it´s relationship with mtg XD.

I made a plane with Luminesca’s colors that had its black mana sealed away. Had it handle an invasion that released the black mana and it did not go well. Loved writing how a people so used to having strong morals and community ties would handle sudden betrayals and back handed tactics. Spoilers, only one person survived.

I think Luminesca is too good to be true. Like it’s a cult where everyone is constantly smiling. I mean, what is life without conflict, strife, individual thought, you know what I mean?
