I had several thoughts/questions/side notes about this video 1. The finger bone bag mention by Mel has always concerned me. There is the implication of a serious misdirection being performed by until now a impeccably trusted character, Davos and a continually dubious character Mel. Im not sure that I have heard anyone fully address this, but like many of the elements of my comments below there is clearly a secret here hidden in plain sight and this is a worthy subject for a full video. 2. They were opening giants tombs because Joramun was a giant (they just should have been looking in Barrowton and not north of the wall) We have already been told in the world book that there are basically many races of man, some more closely related than others(being unable to produce genetically viable offspring as indicative of distant relation), and it is indicated heavily that there are different races of giants and children as well,( many of whom have seemingly vanished from Essos. There appears to be several distinct races living on Westeros dating from antiquity that have been conflated into three misunderstood generically labeled peoples, First Men, Giants, and Children. As explanation for our multitude of conflicting stories about the migration of the first men and their wars with the Giants and Children upon Westeros; I would argue that there would need to be several migratory events of multiple races all during or after the Empire of the Dawns intial colonization. Joramun was indeed the first king in the the north the first giant king and ruler over giants and men and children alike. Like the magics of Westeros,( Skin Changing and Green Sight are two seperate magics though we have been led to believe that they are either one in the same or one can lead to another), social drift, as defined by Dawkins, has warped history into legend and myth that combines with an over simplification of events to become an excepted truth. Similarly... 3. ......The children hunted with dragon glass because they became accustomed to using it. The history of the use of this material is not defined. We have assumed that they always used dragon glass because that was all that they were seen to use. But they were only recorded for a very small amount of time( compared to Leaf's supposed date of 1 million years, though I believe is hyperbolic like Cat and Arianne constantly defaulting to saying this whatever thing has been around for a thousand years is still indicative of a epoch spanning amount of time) and that time having overlapped with the threat of the others does not mean that they for their complete history used only dragon glass. 4. The Valyrians clearly made a mephistophelian deal for their power. We have always made the assumption that they controled their own fates but we hardly ever touch on the notion that they were being manipulated for another purpose. Perhaps the mines were a giant blood sacrifice that was meant to continue their powers, when that could no longer be maintained they were punished. The faceless men seem to know more about these events and we have manufactured elaborate assassination plots and grand conspiracies to explain their involvement. But what if they didnt kill the masters they killed the slaves to stop their pain. That seems to fit their notion of how death should work. Perhaps the Targaryens paid for the deaths of all the Valyrian slaves with their magics and that explains why they are neither dead or have the ability to use the old powers.....Like wise 5...... No one talks about the flip side to these prophesies and whether or not they should be for filled. It seems to me that most of these "heros" bring discord and destruction to one element or another. Yet this world exists in grand imbalance, the seasons and time are clear proof of that(There are time loops in this story,Tyrion experiences one on his river cruise) maybe the long night never ended. The world exists within the long night and these prophesies are are Dawkins drift of historical/future events that attempt its end, but have never in fact ended it,. Perhaps it is the in balance, the shifting powers and ebbing events, that creates a world where life as our characters know it can exist. Life is the journey kind of thing..... Anyway sorry for the rambles. Thank you.

Well obsidian is actually a commonly used material for weapons and tools for civilizations that never discovered the more advanced forms of metallurgy (like forging). The Aztec and Mayans were big on obsidian. It may be brittle but the natural edge is sharper than anything else you could find at the time

Hi, I really like your videos and I agree with most of your ideas in this one, except for the part about obsidian. Obsidian is a very hard and sharp material, not brittle at all! My Aztec ancestors used obsidian daggers to take out the hearts of people selected for human sacrifice, and it was a very swift and clean process, not as messy as one would think off, considering its just a stone tool, but according to some records, the whole operation used to take not more than a few seconds, it was fast enough that when the priests lifted the heart to show it to the people gathered below the temples, the heart was still beating. Also the Aztec Eagle Warriors used a weapon called “macuahuitl”, which basically is a wooden club with obsidian blades (the same concept of a sword) and they were so sharp that they could decapitate a horse with a single blow. About the possible reason for the creation of the horn of winter: my personal theory is that it was actually created by Bran the Builder along with the Wall (Joramur would have gotten his hands on it later either as part of his truce with Bran the Breaker or by simply finding it himself beyond the wall) it is a tried and well-liked trope that powerful magic artifacts are made with a deliberate weakness as a way of preventing anything else from destroying, like, the Wall could potentially be immune to even dragon fire or anything the others are capable of doing, but in exchange the horn needs to exist. Still not sure why it was beyond the wall instead of buried in some bottomless pit in the bottom of the ocean, other than the theory about the truce I reckon it might also be another requirement that the horn never stays too long south of the wall or even that it was done because there is some other requirement other than just blowing in it to bring the wall down, other common trope is that only someone who is from the line of the one to make the artifact can destroy it, so maybe only a Stark can use it to bring the wall down and so the Starks decided to hide it in the most inhospitable place they could find where the intended blower would be sure to see the hell he would unleash upon blowing as a way of stopping careless children from kickstarting the apocalypse and as a way of implicitly asking “Are. You. Sure?” before the blowing of the horn.

I don't think it's weird that the children used obsidian for their weapons. If they don't have metal working knowledge then they are left with just stone, wood, and obsidian. While stone is much stronger it is also harder and more time intensive to carve. Obsidian on the other hand, while more fragile than stone, is also easier to chip and is much sharper. I think there is archeological evidence of pre iron age people using obsidian weapons in the real world.

Just so you know, Quinn, obsidian blades have the sharpest edge ever made by man, that's why they're so brittle.

For reference, in our world obsidian glass is actually one of the MOST desirable pre-metal cutting tools. It is insanely sharp (many surgeons insist on using obsidian instead of steel) which makes it a great cutting too. This is especially so in a pre-iron economy, as bronze cannot be sharpened anywhere near as sharp as obsidian can be, and while stone is cheap it similarly is an inferior product.. For reference, obsidian was one of the most traded items in bronze-age Mesopotamia, as well as pre-contact Mexico. The Aztecs used 'swords' edged in shards of obsidian called macuahuitls.

Wow, your theory about tearing the Throne apart, and the people using the swords to defeat the greater evil is awesome. Augh, I wish the show would have had something similar. Super cool idea.

There's a passage in the book where she talks about not needing food anymore nor needing to sleep and her power is growing. So she's starting to become less human.

But through listening to your readings and interaction with LML, and his recommending you, I’m planning to listen to a lot of your videos. You do have an excellent reading voice and I like your logic and ideas about the series. I especially liked your idea in this video about how the Iron Throne might be used. I’ve heard ideas like that from others as well, and I think it would be an excellent use if it comes to pass.

IdeasOfIceAndFire, historically obsidian was used for combat. Mesoamericans lacking bronze or iron implanted sharp obsidian shards in the edges of large paddle like war clubs. They also made arrow heads and small micro knives from obsidian. But you are right in that obsidian was too brittle for something like the daggers as described in the books.

Note the associations of the two horns. On for ice, one for fire.

Hope you get to go again next year :) Civilizations without metallurgy ( think primitive man & meso America) used flint & obsidian to make blades & arrow points. In central & south America entire economies were built upon the mining & trading of obsidian. The COF had no technology & btw, obsidian *is* a rock. I always saw the COF as a stand in for Indigenous Peoples ( Native Americans, Africans, Pacific Islanders, etc) being invaded by Europeans somewhat mixed in with the native Celts/ Druids being invaded by the Romans. Plus they live in caves underground where obsidian is mined. So...idk. It's also possible that if the only weapon you had was dragon glass & you were going to conjure up a magical baddie that you might need to destroy later, you might make the magical baddie's weakness dragon glass.

Just a little something, I believe the horn is one of the few if not only ways to speak in the tongue of fire to charm or tame dragons not given at birth for the targarian race and the winter horn does the same but for Frost creatures. Lord of light vs the great other a way to use their gifts

Obsidian can be made to be very sharp and it can be easily shaped into arrowheads and spear tips like flint, but obsidian is much harder than flint so the children could have just used obsidian because it was an easy to shape material that they had access to.

Perhaps Euron got the horn from the same place that Aerea Targaryen got her parasite, since both the horn and the parasite kill people by cooking them from the inside. It isn't unlikely that Balerion took Aerea to Valyria, so it gives Euron's claim of finding the horn in Valyria a bit of credibility in my opinion

From the glossiness, I don't think that's a cutting board. That looks like it's finished with lacquer or varnish or something. I would not use that for food prep. A cutting board would be finished with something like mineral oil that doesn't set or go rancid and it would feel a bit oily to the touch, which I bet it doesn't since your hat is sitting on it.

Perhaps Mel’s ruby is from Old Valyria? Doubt she herself got it from there, but the unmistakable parallels to fire are notable, not to mention the mines in Valyria!! But she says it was “made from shadows and suggestion”.... Perhaps the “shadows” were “bound” into the ruby, furthering its power? All speculation.
