How the hell did he sound normal when he was running a gym????
@MegatronTarantulas
@MegatronTarantulas Жыл бұрын
@@-S.L. My reading of Jared is that early on as an avatar before he was fully realized, he probably sounded (and looked) more or less like a normal person. While, like all the characters, there is minimal physical description of Jared, there are a handful of details scattered here and there in this and other eps featuring him, like the fact that he has at least 3 hearts, and has been harvesting "good bones" from people for years. In this ep he says he reached out toward Melanie with "some of [his] hands" not "both" of his hands, which communicates he has more than two. Also he mentions he began to take jobs where he didn't need to be seen by the public as his appearance became more blatantly unnatural. This information taken as a whole means Jared probably bears little resemblance to a baseline human at this point in the story. His ability to disarticulate himself to move through the pipe (and survive when thrown in the Thames from a great height) means he's fully realized (esp since we know he has used his Flesh powers to kill humans for the Ukranian mafia by this point). I think that the deep voice they use when Jared speaks, in addition to statements like "you could try" communicating that if John tried to physically fight him, he would be instantly curb stomped mean that Jared adding mass to himself has made him really really big. I imagine he's like 15 feet tall (but still has a normal sized head which looks tiny, to let you know he is evil) and the deep voice is meant to communicate his unreasonably immense size to the viewer. It's also communicated in how the normally haughty and unimpressed Jon who is regularly blase around super powered murderers like Distortion!Helen sounds cowed in the presence of Jared.

a good post and it's this why I don't understand everyone who says Melanie is or was utterly unlikable or who doesn't have any reaction to her beyond "stop blaming jon" I've always liked her and sympathized with her since the very start; I don't think she's necessarily right all the time or anything, but I can at least see why she thinks the way she does, and how much the trauma she's been through has screwed her up and yeah objectively speaking she is incorrect to blame Jon, but I can still get _why_ she does

ARCHIVIST [Surprised] Oh! Uh… [CLOSES DESK DRAWER] Melanie, I-I’m… S-Sorry, I didn’t, er… I didn’t know you were there. MELANIE [Enunciating carefully] What are you doing? ARCHIVIST I’m… Would you believe I’m… trying to save Daisy? MELANIE [Sharply] With more bullshit surgery? ARCHIVIST Oh I… Melanie, I-I-I’m so sorry. MELANIE [Weary] Oh, fuck off! ARCHIVIST I was trying to save your life. MELANIE Yes, well… you did. I think. But I also, y’know, see your face now, when I wake up screaming. I feel you digging into my leg. Chalk it up as a win for Team Archive, I guess. ARCHIVIST I wanted to ask you. MELANIE And if you had, we wouldn’t be talking right now. I’d have said no, and I’d probably have hurt you. Basira was right. The only way to do it was to completely betray my trust, and destroy any remaining sense of safety. So, yes. Thank you. ARCHIVIST Yeah, I-I’m… I’m surprised you can stand to see either of us. MELANIE [Frustratedly] Who else is there? I mean, Basira is… heh. She’s been the only one for a long time and, yes, I, sort of, maybe, hate her now. I don’t know. I can’t look at her without my leg hurting. But what else am I going to do? I don’t want to be on my own, and I’m stuck here. So… ARCHIVIST Basira said you were doing better. MELANIE [Distressed] Would you just stop? [Getting agitated] This isn’t better. I’m not dying, and I don’t want to kill you. It’s-It’s… it’s just different! Yes, it’s sort of, ‘better’, maybe, but… but I can’t - ARCHIVIST (BACKGROUND) No… Right, no I - Y-Yeah, Melanie- Melanie… MELANIE Don’t tell me to calm down! Don’t you dare! ARCHIVIST Yes, I… [MELANIE EXHALES, REGATHERING COMPOSURE] MELANIE Basira is… um. Basira deals in ‘intel’ these days, in usable data, assets. Not feelings. Not people. Crying, shaking, nightmares… that is better. It doesn’t feel like it, but as far as Basira sees it… I’m not ‘compromised’ anymore. And… that… is better. ARCHIVIST At least it’s out. Maybe… maybe It’s enough to start healing? Start letting go of the anger. MELANIE Oh just stop! Just stop and listen! ARCHIVIST Okay. MELANIE [Charged tones] Yes, the bullet was bad, right, but it didn’t make me angry. Anger is… Anger’s been all I’ve had for a very long time. Years. Maybe since… oh, I, I don’t know. But everything I’ve done, everything I pushed for was because I was angry. Angry at being passed over, being disrespected, ignored. That sort of anger, it - it powers you. Right up until it slips out and hurts someone. I hurt someone. And then one day, I suddenly have this thing that takes all that rage, and it holds it, tells me it’s right, that it’s me. It didn’t stay in my leg because of some ghostly masterplan. It stayed because I wanted it. ARCHIVIST [Realising] Shit. MELANIE Yes. ARCHIVIST … Melanie, I - MELANIE So, why are you trying to chop off your finger? ARCHIVIST [Awkwardly] Oh! I… I um… I nee-need a… I’ve been thinking of it a-as an anchor. I think. I… know. Something I have a connection to, th-that I can use to find my way out of the Coffin when I reach Daisy. I-I figured the strongest anchor would be… part of my own body. MELANIE Okay. So… just cut it off. ARCHIVIST I’m doing my best. MELANIE Hmph. Can’t go through with it? ARCHIVIST Oh, th-the blade keeps going in. And… it hurts. Hurts plenty. But then it heals up. Pretty much the moment I take it out. No wound, no scar, nothing. MELANIE I could try? ARCHIVIST I… don’t think that would be a good idea right now. MELANIE Maybe not. ARCHIVIST I mean, you’d think I’d have a better idea how to do it. All these… all these statements and… [SMALL LAUGH] You know who I need? I need the Boneturner. [Sighs] Just reach in and grab a rib. Alright. ARCHIVIST Right. Statement first. JARED … Fine. ARCHIVIST Uh. Statement of Jared Hopworth, the Boneturner. Statement begins. [THROATY LAUGH] JARED (STATEMENT) Where do you want me to start? Growing up? My folks? How ‘bout that growth spurt when I was nine? It left me taller than all the other kids. I hated them, the way they stared. But they were, and that felt good, even back then. It felt right. My Dad was proud of it too. He was a short man, bully, and watching me loom over people really made ‘im happy. Mum just scowled, but then… huh, she always did. I wrecked my school. I did have friends, but they left me, one by one, until all that I had were the dregs; the ones who stayed ‘coz they were too scared to leave. We were always either in trouble, or looking for it. Those were bad times. I tried to look ahead, but I couldn’t see anything. No future, no hope; just bitter parents, and whatever misery I could pass on to everyone else. God knows what would’ve happened if that little prick Sebastian hadn’t given me that book. I didn’t know what it was at first, not really. But it talked to me about bones and flesh and muscle and blood; the bits of myself I actually knew and liked. So I listened, and I read, and I learned. I fumbled through the lessons the book wanted to teach me, and my first try was clumsy. Stupid. Turns out, Dad didn’t like being tall nearly as much as he thought he would. And Mum didn’t like her new smile, either. So I left. I wandered around for a bit. Worked a lotta jobs where it didn’t matter what you looked like. There’s always a spot for someone who can get rid of people. You must have heard about me. I left plenty of people scared and crying, itching to tell someone what happened to ‘em. Some of them must have made it to you. There were others. Others of skin and hunger; they tried to talk to me about gods. They’d go on and on about remaking the world; of a new day of blood and flesh. I told them to piss off. I like the world just as it is. I take what I want and I make myself more, and when people look at me… that fear - it feels amazing. Some of my mates, the ones I helped find their proper bodies, they listened, and went to feed the hunger. Not me though. I never was that ambitious. The letters started comin’ in about two years ago. Good white paper, large print. Nice and simple. Dunno who sent them, they were never signed, and I dunno how they kept finding me. There was never much in them; normally just a name and a place or a time. I ignored the first couple, but they kept coming, and eventually I got curious. So, I followed the instructions in one of ‘em. I found Regan Hasnain of 70 Clairmont Gardens, and that got rid of most of my doubts. I don’t blame people for thinking that all bones are the same, most people don’t have much experience, but it’s not true. There are good bones, and there are bad bones, and Regan Hasnain had some very good bones in her. They were solid, healthy, and they jumped at my touch. I didn’t doubt the letters again. They came pretty regular after that. And they always led to summat good. Quality bones, a new mate, or some unlucky fool who wouldn’t look at me for the fear. It got so I trusted them. The letters, I mean. So I didn’t question them. There’s a lotta stuff in this world I’ve never understood, and these were no different. Then I got one about your lot, your Archives. Told me to go there and kill you. They even sent a picture. So I did. Well, I tried. Didn’t know about those tunnels or wherever this place is, but the pipes… they were wide enough for me and a few friends to squeeze through, bit by bit, one bone at a time. [DEMONSTRATIVE CRACKING ACCOMPANIES THIS] When we came up through the floor, it was wonderful. I don’t think I’ll ever forget the look on their faces. It was like their world had gone with the floor. The weak one legged it, and I thought the skinny one did too. There was just the copper. It weren’t dressed like one, but I know police when I smell it. They tried to run, but we were everywhere, and they couldn’t stop us undoing them for parts. You weren’t there, which was sad, but it made it easier. At least until the knife. I don’t know what the skinny one did, what she was, but that knife hurt. She screamed, and stabbed, and cut through all the others, ruining their perfect bodies. Then, she turned on me. Reached out with some of my hands, to get inside her, and pull her apart, and she cut them off. I got… scared. So I ran. I ran through the first door I found. And now I don’t know where I am. I’m startin’ to think the letters were a trap. Was it you? Did you want me here? ‘Coz if so, well played. Mind you, lot of trouble to go through just to lose a rib, so maybe not. That’s it, then. Do you want to do this, or what? ARCHIVIST That’s it? [HE SNORTS] Hardly worth a rib. [JARED LOOMS FORWARD] [Placatingly] Alright! Alright. Is it, uh… Is is going to hurt? JARED Dunno. Doesn’t hurt me. [THE ARCHIVIST MAKES IT BE KNOWN THAT IT DOES RATHER] [EXTENDED SOUNDS OF MEAT AND BONE MOVEMENT] That’s yours. What’s it for? [PAINED SOUNDS OF RECOVERY] ARCHIVIST [Stumblingly] Um… A, A-An anchor JARED Huh. Right. Anyway, this one’s for me. [MORE MOBILE MEAT NOISES, THIS TIME OF INSERTION] Huh. That’s a weird one. Not sure I like it. Still. Mine now. ARCHIVIST [Weakly] I supp… I suppose it is. JARED You said I could leave. ARCHIVIST Y-yes. Coming back to this it really does upset me how many people shit on Melanie for not handling things perfectly. Should she have listened more and been kinder to Jon? Yeah, definitely. But having no degree of empathy or understanding for her situation? Just couldn't be me. As someone who relates a _lot_ to her feelings (especially regarding empowerment and anger), it's uniquely distressing to imagine that you could have all of your feelings completely disregarded because you don't present them palatably enough, as if being trapped like a caged animal in such a horrible situation makes it easy to conduct yourself perfectly and reasonably. I don't think Melanie doesn't owe Jon more respect than she gives him, to be completely clear, she certainly does, but at the same time it's just hard for me not to sympathize with how aimless and alone she must feel, with no agency or ability to exercise any kind of control over her circumstances, which is the worst part of a situation like this for someone dealing with those kinds of feelings. That feeling of being steered and disempowered leads to the kind of problems she has with people, really. It's all about seeking that sense of control where you can find it, which unfortunately leads to toxic relationships with your peers, a lot of times. I'm glad she finally got out. It's what she needed.

It seems like a justification for any kind of toxic and abusive behavior being enforced onto accepting victims by people, who don't have any sense of self-control, despite in this particular situation not only Melanie had a resemblance of self-autonomy and consideration she could get within the group, but also constantly separated herself from contact with others, giving herself full permission for her assessment of situation to be absolute over anyone's safety or concern (Like, for example, her attempts at killing Elias). And the unsympathetic attitude she shows towards other people who're trying their best to comfort her doesn't help her character to be seen sympathetic either.

I rarely comment, and this comment is kind of old but like !! This ! Was getting a bit upsetting to see so many people be rude to Melanie :( it’s some kind of bias - this kind of stuff happened back in season two with Jon’s paranoia, where comments would absolutely clown on him for misplaced emotions and lack of trust in Martin. Not exactly the same, but it’s in a similar vein and both are not good ! Not good indeed.

Melanie had far more control over her situation than most people in the podcast did. She is absolutely trying to suck in all the attention and sympathy whenever possible. There's a reason people stop feeling sorry for the ones who make public crying a sport. What they do is never going to help--it is a method of self-pitying and refusing responsibility for what you did to get and keep yourself there. She lacks agency because she chooses not to take any unless she can do whatever she likes whenever. She has a really childish brat personality.

So, Martin, I know you're busy & this is a little late, but can you take a break from being isolated to make Jon a cup of tea & a nice head pat, maybe even a hug, for giving up a rib so he could enter an otherworldly coffin that most people don't come back from to save Daisy, a woman that generally doesn't like him, just because he feels bad that he accidentally got her taken away from Basira, someone who used to almost be his friend? I mean, it would take, like, five minutes, tops.

I still kind of miss Michael, but Helen is honestly a legend, and I love how she's genuinely *nice* to Melanie and Jon. That was a nice breath of fresh distorted air. Also, I have sensory issues and am really sensitive to sounds, and this episode was HARD to listen to. Like, dayum. Also, Jon is heckin dedicated. I don't know if he's doing this because he wants Daisy back or if he's trying to prove that they can trust him, but either way he's powering through the pain, my homies.

Hello again. Haven't written anything in the past few uploads... Sooo.... Flesh. An animal fear, according to Smirk. It's also the fear of gore, I think. Squeamishness and such. Speaking of Anchors, I think the only thing keeping Daisy alive in there is her relationship with Basira. They are each others Anchors. And I think all the other characters are paired this way too.

im genuinely really surprised at how many people hate melanie. jon is my favorite character but like, as a person with anger problems her rage makes a lot of sense to me if you put yourself in her shoes for a moment- even if it doesnt seem rational to some people, angry people have to put their anger SOMEWHERE, and her choice is to blame jon. i really empathize with her.
@faxonii
@faxonii 3 жыл бұрын
i also totally empathize with her. i used to struggle with anger issues and melanie’s anger doesn’t seem at all extreme, it’s just misplaced. she was manipulated into joining the institute, everyone keeps dying all around her, she seems to already have anger issues normally, she can’t trust anyone anymore, she’s stuck in one place with those same people she can’t trust, she had an anger bullet festering in her leg, they performed non-consensual surgery on her that she is traumatized by and has night terrors about. do i condone her treating jon like shit? no. do i understand why she’s doing it? yes. she has no other outlet to express her anger and jon is a very easy punching bag. but people seem really quick to dismiss all of this and are like “omg melanie die” “stfu melanie” “god i hate melanie”

@@faxonii Maybe people are like that because just how you are empathizing with her, others empathize with Jon. As someone who has anxiety I'm often not able to push back against people who are being assholes to me. I try to be polite, I back away. Her having problems is understandable. Other people hating her behavior is also completely understandable. And nice try reducing arguments against her to "people her calling her a meanie" when literally majority of the comments above have stated that they understand she has trauma but still dislike her behavior right now. Trauma isn't an excuse to at least try to control yourself. Literally every time she talked to Jon even before the surgery has been shitty. And she definitely targets him more than the others and that certainly is out of choice.

@@katara2021 Agreed. It feels like Melanie has been cruel to Jon before the bullet got lodged in her, even. I remember her getting angry at him a couple times before it. The way she seems to single Jon out feels flat-out toxic and unwarranted even as we know that she's suffered trauma.

@@AshGreytree Thank you. It's clear that what is happening is what happens in real life. When you can't punch the big boss or dismantle a vast system, your anger, wrongfully, locks onto an individual that is above you in the chain, doesn't matter if they too are literally stuck or suffering. All that matters is that they serve as a representation of all your problems. It was the same with Tim and later on even Basira. Melanie even got so far as to accuse Jon of being the reason she took the job as if he didn't try to warn her.
