I mean, ultimately their whole birthed from flames thing was just killing someone at a very particular time. Raising a kid is them having to *keep* this kid alive. It's literally the opposite of their whole revelling in destruction shtick.

I remember Gerard Keay being so certain there was no power in the other emotions outside of fear... But this is now twice in a row we see those outside emotions playing significant roles in derailing evil. For the Slaughter, it's empathy. For the desolation, it was hope........ Hell, I remember that backpacker who felt alone when overwhelmed by a faceless crowed, and was able to get out by remembering his connection to his mother. They are spelling out that even though there are no suped-up avatars of these other feels, they Can be used as a tool against the powers. Hope Jon figures that out sooner rather than later.
@DerMoerpler

Also the Buried. When Jon was in the coffin, it was described as the weight of all of your guilt crushing you. But in all of the statements where people escaped The Buried, it was because they stopped fighting and accepted their fate (at least the woman on the train and the guy in the flood, but I think it goes for all of them). So by accepting your guilt and your mistakes and no longer fighting them, you can escape the Buried.

It makes sense. The entities feed on fear. When someone is able to latch onto another emotion or thought to anchor them, their fear lessens, thus lessening the entity’s ability to fully consume them. With the statements about people escaping the Buried, acceptance and calm staved off their panic and fear, so they were let go. In “Lost in the Crowd” the statement giver was almost lost to the Lonely, but anchored themself with reminders that there was still at least someone out there who they were close with and who loves them, their mother. Those thoughts of home calmed their mind, redirecting it from thoughts of fear, and they were let go. Fear is what traps you. If you find a way to conquer the fear, the entities can’t fully claim you. They might still hurt you. They might still leave a mark. But you’ll probably live. At least that’s my theory. ☺️

@@DerMoerpler I think you can beat every single fear by stop beeing afraid. She laid down and accepted death and stopped beeing afraid of it and the buried probably just lost interest. What good does she do if she isn´t afraid? I think the guy who was late to dinner and just walked out of the spiral might also be a case of that. And the plumber guy who didn´t notice the blood in the drain and stuff and just did his job and went home.

something that continually stands out to me as one of the most tragic aspects of these entities, is how it affects children. I can’t stop thinking about Trevor Herbert watching his brother dying, Gerard Keay being born into a terrifying world he wanted no part of, Jon finding the Leitner and witnessing the death of his bully, etc. Agnes is one of the saddest. She was born as her mother was immolated, raised to spearhead a cult, and in the end she died just because she had the thought that she had the possibility of living a normal life. It’s so sad to see how these entities don’t have any reservations about destroying children’s lives as well as adults. It’s like Tim said in season 3, it all comes down to bad luck. Idk it just makes me sad I guess

The Stranger has also been halted twice by people just waltzing in and blowing the ritual up. For all of their preparation, the Stranger seems to take very little precaution against intruders. The Slaugher's ritual died with a whimper when they just ran out of steam, and the Flesh's ritual, it could be argued, was halted due its excessive requirements. It took days of throwing meat into a hole in the ground and very unsubtly hauling it around town in trucks. It was day three of the ritual before Gertrude finally got around to blowing it up.

I feel the reason Agnes can crumble from the smallest slice of doubt but Jon is plagued with it constantly is by the nature of their entities. There is no room for hesitation in a bonfire. There is material and there is the steady march of heat as it all is consumed and then reduced. But The Eye is all about perceptions. It’s about knowing and not knowing and anxiety and speculation and DOUBT. The Eye relishes in Jon’s doubt whereas The Desolation is antithetical to hesitance, which is why Agnes was brought down by it, being such a pure manifestation of her entity.

Yeah. I feel like her charactization changes based on the statement giver. First, she was a mysterious troubled child, someone who gave the 'kindly' Mr. Fielding so much grief. Then, she was an odd child who saved the protag from being served to Mr. Spider. Next, she was a beautiful, thoughtful woman who seemed to long to be normal. Now she's a spoiled brat, who used to have a nasty temper. And possibly took pleasure in the hurting of others.
@xxzavier42
@xxzavier42 6 күн бұрын
@@mechengr1731I’m pretty sure her being described as a spoiled brat was just a description of her childhood and described how much the lightless flame struggled to raise her. Also the fact that multiple people died because of her upbringing probably made Eugene upset. But also she was literally born and baptized by the flame and wasn’t able to talk to or interact with many people her age due to her power. It’s understandable that she’d be not that well adjusted. But also he did say she was considerate and quiet and willing to learn. I’m pretty sure her enjoying the idea of the desolation came from her being raised and born to the fire. Honestly this description seems slightly biased but mostly positive. It’s clear that the lightless flame cared for her and she cared for them. Also the fact that she felt doubt proves that she likely wanted a normal life.

This episode was better than expected. I was so confused at first as to why the barista had ruined their plans and then just hope/doubt entering agnus' mind. Wow. He did it. I still feel bad for him. Also Jon's painful psychic session is OOF big hurt

I've had a question for a while: if these fears are thousands(?) of years old, how have none of these rituals ever succeeded? Surely, they attempted them before the early oughts, right? It seems like this episode (and comments) provide an answer: the human spirit. We repeatedly see fears being overcome by individuals, much less all of humanity. I haven't finished the series yet, but im going to predict that it is impossible for fear to win in the end.

I think what’s the saddest part is that there’s hints of Agnes being a naturally good person amidst the indoctrination. She’s saved people before and holds a grudge on the web for what they’ve done to the kids of hilltop road.

While this answered alot of questions (specifically about the house and a bit about how the spider works) it makes a few more poiniont ones, namely if Agnes was made, then what does that say about the other avatars? It certainly seems like the spiral chooses almost randomly, and out boi seems to be choosen by Elias soooo
@himeow7454
@himeow7454 3 жыл бұрын
It kind of seems like the Spiral doesn't choose avatars at all; rather, it's solely up to whether a person the Distortion traps inside the hallways manages to destroy it from the inside and replace the previous avatar.
@TheNitpickChick
@TheNitpickChick 3 жыл бұрын
I mean Agnes was a special case. Jude Perry is also considered an avatar of The Desolation, but she was recruited the old fashioned way. Agnes was basically a step above most avatars, becoming closer to what The Distortion was before it became strapped down to an identity. Or closer to Nikola, who was specifically created to be the Dancer in The Unknowing.
