The first time I listened to this, I assumed that Neil had traded his syringe to Salesa in exchange for a paranormal artifact to help with the research, but it ended up cursing him. Now on the second listen, it occurs to me that the syringe Thomas described as Neil's totem was exactly that; the forces of disease always had it out for Neil because of his line of work, and Snow's syringe was acting as a protective talisman keeping them at bay. And as soon as he sold it for funding and lost that protection... it was open season on the good doctor :(

As soon as I saw the description, I get really excited. I lived in Uganda for a while and everyone talked about malaria like it was the flu. Without listening, I’m going to hope that this has to do with the vampire jumping spider that only lived in my area of Uganda. I never saw one but I always wanted to - scientists are trying to use them in malaria control because they prefer mosquitoes that have consumed blood recently!

Gonna be honest the idea of a vampire jumping spider is literally more horrifying than anything I've heard in this podcast ☹

@@ktmac8@cassiebethgriffith Well, I had to look this up. Evarcha culicivora is the Latin name and they are about 5mm, incapable of biting through human skin, so I think we're safe. They LOVE human blood though, and specialize in hunting fed mosquitoes! They are the only animal known to hunt based on what the prey has fed on. So, not vampire spiders, but vampire HUNTER spiders ha ha 🙃

This episode left me all nostalgic- my late father was 'in' tropical medicine and back in the 60s & 70s worked for a long spell on malaria. Brought back happy memories of my parents (my mother had been in the same line before marriage and motherhood) chatting over dinner about the effects of the disease and what could be done that didn't involve pouring DDT or paraffin over every water source in the tropics. My father even had his own lab. at home and I was allowed to 'help' make up slides and look through the microscope-under strict supervision as I was VERY young. I also got to read his textbooks, many of which had thrilling pictures (I thought then) of sufferers from all sorts of other interesting diseases and parasites- including one of a doctor pulling a large worm out of someone's arm by winding it round a stick..... And his lab coats were ALWAYS spotless. I think it was expected back then.

Fun fact, mosquitos are actually pollinators with some sub species pollinating almost as much as bees themselves. Also, getting rid of them would have an affect on frogs, fish, birds, bears, and ultimately humans

Honestly if I was in Tim's position then found I could get a decent wage in an institute I'd have gone for it. Nice cushy job, slow pace, only occasionally needing to run errands. After that Jane incident I'd not be inclined to leave either, purely because at that point why leave? You're a target either way, that deep in, so may as well know what you have to contest with.

Spoiler: Don't know what they're all complaining about. The Magnus Institute seems to pay pretty well for an academic job. Gurenteed job security (if you're in the archives😅). They seem to have a pretty forgiving sick/absences policy and excellent private insurance if Jon's 6-month stay in a private hospital room is anything to go by. Where do I send my CV?😂

If that snow guy had such an important role in fighting malaria, maybe that made him an enemy of mosquitoes/disease demon/god thing. I feel like the syringe was a protective talisman that prevented the holder from being attacked by the disease demon thing. As the Snow guy's descendant and directly working on research against the spread of malaria and other diseases this made him a pretty big target. Maybe that's why it was worth so much. Maybe the disease demon or it's minions or allies were the ones who bought it off him so they could take him out for good. Heck, maybe they even had a hand in his money troubles. Also believe the one controlling the mosquitos was also involved in that nursing home mess.

Dr. John Snow is considered the father of epidemiology for his work on tracking the vector of a cholera outbreak in London. He was one of the early proponents of germ theory and helped develop modern public health and sanitation; as well as, championing medical hygiene (starilization and washing of hands). He never did any research related to malaria or tropical diseases.
