The Making of Casualties of War documentary, another insightful and interesting documentary about one of my favourite films ever. Please also check out the other similar video I have uploaded "Ericksson's War" a conversation with Michael J Fox where he talks about his role and thoughts about the film.
I do not own any of this footage and no copyright infringement is intended, all rights belong to the original producers.

@@splitdiopterfanrr8695 Actually we see her twice in this film. She played the victim and the girl Eriksson talks to at the end of the movie. She was a refugee so seeing the war again, even on a movie set, must have triggered some bad memories which added to her performance, at least that's what I remembered she said in an interview.

My Ex-wife had a knack for finding obscure titles in our neighborhood VHS rental store back in the '90's. One Night she brought this home, and we loved every minute of it. From the brilliant performances, the casting the locations and Ennio Morricones brilliant score. This is the one that made me watch all of the other "Vietnam Movies". Definitely a GREAT movie

The darkest "War" movie I've ever seen. Remember walking out of the cinema in the west end of London and like me my fellow cinema goer's were silent , just trying to process what we'd all just seen ! I should add that during the movie when then trail verdict came in , for the only time in my life I heard a previously transfixed audience suddenly come to life and unanimously applaud. I can't use words like "Great" or "Fantastic" to describe this film., given the heart of the story they would be inappropriate,. All I can say is, please go and watch it.

My husband is a retired JAG who studied the Hill 192 Incident. A lot of officers went down as well for covering it up. The squad might not have done much time, but you can be sure they paid for it for the rest of their lives. A court martial is conviction for a federal offense and will show up in every background search someone does on you--hiring managers, gun sellers, credit companies, etc. They also lost their VA benefits--free healthcare, mortgage applications, legal assistance, and tax-free base shopping.

In my opinion, this is De Palma's finest film. I'm just sorry that it was so unsuccessful at the box office and that few people saw it. Julie Salamon writes in her book, "The Devil's Candy", that after this movie flopped, De Palma went out into the streets in Paris, collapsed and almost died -- apparently, because the low box office returns were too much for him to handle. If it's any consolation to you now, Mr. De Palma, I assure you that this is a great movie.

Great insight, I remember reading how De Palma did a special screening for his buddies including Spielberg and Scorsese and a few private members of the press and he told them he thought it was his best work to date but after everyone had seen it Spielberg strait up told him how the movie would likely not get the big numbers of a Platoon or Full Metal Jacket as the audiences simply would not be able to handle the story and take it in.

I think even now when people watch trailers for or read about these 'serious' kind of movies they normally make a decision to wait for the video release before watching, not many people outside of enthusiasts will go to the cinema to watch this kind of film which is a shame.

I think it was just the type of film it was unfortunately, Born On The 4th Of July did well around the same time but it had a nice hollywood gloss to it that more casual movie goers could enjoy, Casualties was a lot more raw it wasn't a film you could take the family to and it wasn't a film that you'd go on a date night to watch, trying to push it into summer blockbuster season was the biggest mistake in retrospect.

This is a great interview. By chance I caught the ending on TV which I always loved. The event actually did happen in the original interview with Ericksson, Oct 1969, N Yorker. The place was Minn, not San Francisco. While De Palma took some liberties, it was gut wrenching, haunting, and beautiful. The writer did not like the ending but De Palma trusted his instincts. Lucky for us he did. He always wanted healing and some sort of closer to conclude the film. I truly wish Ericksson found closer as well.

I'm 28 now and don't get as sad and scared when I watch the movie, I get more mad and hungry for justice like Eriksson. I looked up a picture of the real-life counterpart of the character that Sean Penn portrayed sometime late last night/early this morning and my first thoughts were, there's the Bastard😠 That's why I love Michael J Fox's character as well as the real-life counterpart because.., I saw myself in that person.. someone who had gone through so much hell like everyone else and his gut instinct was.. I don't care what's going on I'm doing fucked up things for no apparent reason whatsoever. Plus his character as well as the real-life person made me feel safe and made me feel like I can contain my sanity in a squad full of insanely bad people while standing up for myself and others.

Summer 1989 was the big blockbuster summer of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," "Batman," "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids," and "Lethal Weapon 2." This movie was really dark in comparison - it's about a rape, after all - and it came out in August, where the box office hits were usually tapering off as the season would wind down. People were more accustomed to a comedic Michael J. Fox; his other non-comedic roles from the previous few years like "Bright Lights, Big City" didn't bring crowds.

Split Diopter Fan RR86 it’s aged better than the other Vietnam war films. As time has passed, the majority of the other films have turned into huge war cliches. Watching platoon and full metal jacket today is different because so much of the dialogue has become super cliche. Not this movie though. It emphasizes performance over explosive war action. It’s not over saturated with music (like platoon). It’s not overly surreal like apocalypse now. It has a clear and well defined plot and character development unlike full metal jacket which just fizzles after the boot camp part is over. It’s uniqueness becomes more and more apparent as time passes

It seems DePalma gave Thuy a chance because she said the words anyhow but even at her age and acting skills it seems there was still the “victim” there. It had to be. It would be insulting otherwise. I think DePalma did the right thing. Movies and TV shows can be influential and quite powerful. Her reassuring voice has healing power. It’s 2023 and most Vietnamese Americans are quite successful. Actually, David Rabe's alternative for the ending was to have Erikkson helping the girl on the train carrying groceries during a snowfall. It was *not* David's idea to put in a nightmare sequence; that was a concept which De Palma and Art Linson had flirted with, and which David put into the script with some hesitation. He was relieved that it didn't get filmed. What David does not like about the ending is the whole exchange of the girl telling Eriksson that his "bad dream" is over. Still, I appreciate the ending more after hearing De Palma's explanation for what it means.

What this film should have rationalized about war, what soldiers fight is what they become... I do remember a German Captain when they invaded Russia stated about did they ever rape women.. Cpt smiled and said, "We had to remind ourselves they were inferior" If u still need your resolve...No

This movie didn’t do well in theaters and critics weren’t kind to it either. But over time, the appreciation of this film has grown and is studied in film and history classes. It’s not saturated with music like other Vietnam films and it’s not emotionally manipulative. The camera takes its time with the characters and let’s the audience figure it out As time passes, other Vietnam war films become more blatant in how chock full of war cliches it has-even platoon and full metal jacket. This film ages very well and as time passes, it stands apart from other Vietnam war films and looks more and more unique. And it emphasizes the performances. The other films are too top heavy with the war action scenes

Platoon was a piece of propaganda making one group look bad and the other one good. As many of Oliver Stone’s movies. This one was more complex. Penn’s character was a 20 year old hardened by a life in the NYC area and never had a moral compass from the beginning, Fox’s was a simple Minnesota farm boy, Harvey was probably just as mean and hardened as Penn to begin with, the Lt didn’t take action wanting to protect his career and sanity, and Dale Dye’s character had probably already been through WW2 and Korea, a prior enlisted that’s seen plenty of combat and without a filter as a result.

Does anyone have any information at all about the German movie he is talking about at around the 2:00 mark? I'm guessing now in 2022 with the internet being what it is, it might be possible to track it down. I'm not sure when this interview with the director originally took place, so it's possible that it this point it may have surfaced. I would be interested in giving it a view, as I had no idea it existed until just now. When you type in a search bar the words "German, War, Casualties," it's pretty much a nightmare to find what you are actually looking for. If anyone has any info, I would really appreciate it if you could post the title, or any info at all that could point me in the right direction. Thanks. Edit: Opps, nevermind, I didn't think to just search for the 1970 Berlin Film Festival, should have been my first stop. For anyone that might be interested here is the film he's talking about: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O.k._(film) And it's available online if you search for it. Cheers.

@@kevin-yv1ig Thanks buddy. I found it about a week after typing this comment. It was not a great movie but was definitely interesting. It did not paint America's involvement in Vietnam, as well as many other countries, in a very positive light. But as we all know now, this is very true.

Tarentino went on record and stated that this film presented the most traumatizing rape scene in the history of cinema. I don't know if I necessarily agree with him though about that. I think that the rape scene in The Accused is perhaps a more harrowing and disturbing rape scene than the one in COW is. And then of course you have the infamously prolonged rape scene from Irreversible as well. However I haven't actually seen Irreversible before, so I really can't comment on how disturbing it truly is. So therefore for me, as far as the most affecting, gut wrenching and powerful rape scenes in cinema goes, I'd place Casualties of War as being second only to The Accused. But it doesn't really make much of a difference in the end though as there's no getting by unscathed when it comes to viewing a rape scene in any film, cause there all horrific when it comes down to it.

Jdem88 Nor have I seen this one either. I guess I've been somewhat fortunate to not have viewed that many rape scenes throughout my film going experience thus far, apart from those two. I did see the rape scene in the original Last House on The Left though. Pretty upsetting as well, although I actually found it to be more disturbing when they told the girl to piss her pants right before the rape happened. It was pretty terrible to see them utterly humiliate and mentally torment that poor girl like that. I know the movie I Spit on Your Grave contains an infamous rape scene in it too but I've never seen that one before. And you could also include the scenes in A Clockwork Orange as well.

Should have used an actor who actually chewed tobacco if the character chewed tobacco. It looks dumb when he’s spitting white, clean spit. We all know Sean Penn doesn’t have real tobacco in his mouth. That sums up why I don’t like this movie. It doesn’t seem authentic.

This is a very good and awfully disturbing film that once again chronicles America's involvement in the Vietnam War. But I also have to disagree, once again, with Tarentino's view of this being the best film ever made about this particular war. I do feel that films such as Platoon and possibly Full Metal Jacket are, overall, the stronger and more impactful films in detailing the Vietnam experience than Casualties of War is. And it also must be taken into account that Platoon was directed by a man who actually served over there in Vietnam unlike DePalma who never went. This fact alone gives credence to Platoon being a bit more of a realistic view of what life over there was truly like. I don't include Apocalypse Now in this debate simply because the film itself is dealing with such bigger ideas and themes than the rest are, and thus goes beyond only detailing specific events that were dealt with and experienced throughout that war. As a war film it's really something else entirely when compared to all the other ones.

Screenplay for C.O.W was written by a Vietnam Vet so I think it negates De Palma's lack of involvement when it comes to the film it self, also I think it's different enough (like Apocalypse now) to not get compared directly to something like Platoon/Full Metal Jack and Hamburger Hill as the story is less about the war in general or one battle and more about a single story within the war.
