She did a good job acting-wise, but she honestly looked so different from Shelly Duvall that it still felt very distracting. Duvall had such a unique look in the Shining which makes the casting in DS look like a generic Hollywood actress in a B tier horror film which isn't a knock on this actress, just that Kubrick was very particular about the look of the characters and actors in his own films.

With the angle it was shot in, Jack Torrance looked exactly like he did in the Shining. I thought it actually was Jack Nicholson with a lot of makeup until I learned later that it was a different actor. The movie felt like it was the same world as the Shining, which is an extremely difficult thing to do right.

hypnocilicdreams They didn’t want an impersonation, that’s why they had Jack Torrance fill in the Lloyd role, so it could be quite brief as well.
@hypnocilicdreams
@hypnocilicdreams 4 жыл бұрын
@@StopCallingMeShirley1180 It was an impersonation of Nicholson's portrayal of the character, in the same way those of Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers & young Danny Llloyd were. Yes it was under the in film pretense of bartender Lloyd's role, but for adult Danny Torrance sharing the scene (who recognised him) & the audience, it was clearly an attempt at Nicholson's Torrance recreated. Mannerisms, voice, posture, even hairline. I liked it. It was perfectly restrained.

@@bigmack2654 Agreed. Sadly, I believe it is because the original was so full of angst and struggle among the cast that the magic happened. Kubrick created a rough time for all and it was just what was needed to make the film work. This director of "Sleep" shouldn't have been having such a great time with the cast, as it showed in the film and didn't create the tension that was needed for "Doctor Sleep" to really be a believable sequel. Such a pity, as the sets really were amazing in this sequel. A lot of hard work for not a lot of return, both financially or artistically.

i was just thinking this, but also think Rian Johnson is a great director and not screenwriter. If Disney had hired great writers from day 1, put together a proper story that spanned the new trilogy, and hired the directors to just direct (directors generally have a tiny input into the story but never a lot of control), the series wouldn't of been such a mess.

Stephen King is my all-time idol. One day I wish that I will meet him. I just now started reading the shining and I’m in love with it. I want to be like Stephen king some day when I get older which is very unlikely but I still have dreams. I’m only 10 years old but my favorite movie is IT and I just think that the humor in the Horror together is a perfect combination. I am trying to write a little bit more and come up with some horror novels but I’m not too good at it. But I still hope that I am like Stephen king when I get older which again is very unlikely. Thank you Stephen King for making me realize that a book isn’t just a boring stack of papers with boring words on it on it. You are my idol and thank you again for making me try to get better at writing.

This film is excellent. Definitely one of the best King adaptations- deserves far greater recognition! What a great Making Of!

Somehow I've a feeling this is not the last time the hotel sets from The Shining will be recreated. Film makers (and viewers) are just obsessed with that film. I should mention: I think Dr. Sleep is a very good film.

Every single person in this had such huge shoes to fit, and they went all for it! This is, by far, the best movie adaptation I've ever seen, because there's so much care and love and hard work to adapt not one, not two, but three works of art: The Shining movie, The Shining book, AND Dr. Sleep book. Mega ambitious

Fantastic recreation of that hotel. I grew up with the original, and this would have been so cool to step inside.

If only Stanley was still alive to see his visionary masterpiece so beautifully commended by Mike Flanagan! I absolutely loved this movie, and it most certainly held up compared to The Shining.

"a continuity of character, not a continuity of actor" They we're so brilliant in the casting of the actors who played Wendy and Jack Torrence. Both actors did incredible work in reviving performances that matched Nicolson and Duvall. And Carl Lumbly was incredible as Dick.
