part 8/10
documentary about the making of the 1982 blockbuster classic. The story is told through interviews with director Steven Spielberg, co-producer Kathleen Kennedy, sound designer Ben Burtt, composer John Williams, and other key cast and crew members. It also includes rare, behind-the-scenes footage taken at the time of the original production, and deleted scenes not seen in the final cut (including the legendary "Principal Scene" with Harrison Ford).

This making-of special to me is one of the biggest 'lost pieces' of making-of material out there. You have the deleted scenes, and the information that even back then, Steven was not happy with the guns in the film. But also, this film has so many candid moments where Steven kind of opens up, and you can see his enthusiasm for the material. Whether he changes his voice, or gets excited about E.T. eating watermelon, and saying the scene 'brought E.T. to life.'

When Harrison Ford opened the blinds, it reminded me of Mr Strickland in BTTF 2 looking out at the parking lot. lol

@tomes55moon I totally agree... It really pissed me me off that he did that... now Im not "pro guns used on kids" but its the fact that im 20 now and i have been watching this film since i was 3... and it really just sticks out that he cut it out... and anyone who seen the Original VHS version... theyd remember that Elliotts mom showed that it is wrong anyway (she yelled at the cops... NO GUNS THEY"RE CHILDREN!) , so to me its annoying that he cut it so noticeably... when he didnt even have to

Spielberg regretted filming guns in the original film, so he changed it for the special edition. And then he regretted actually changing the film at all, so he went back to distributing the original. The only person never happy with a masterpiece is the very artist who made it.

i dont like that steve thinks the guns went too far, i think when i was a kid they played an important part in the whole fear of the adults and were like an addition to the keys he used to signify 'grownups'. taking them out for the re-edition absolutely sucked

I'm twenty-seven now. When I was three, I saw many movies that were blockbuster classics. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, E.T. Who Frammed Roger Rabbit, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, and many others. When I saw this movie for the first time I remember seeing Harrison Ford as the character "Keys" which is the character played by Peter Coyote. For years I had wished that it really was Harrison Ford. Even though Keys was almost the villain, Harrison Ford would have been perfect I thought.

Showing guns was perfect for that scene. Looses much of it's intensity and desperate reason to start flying without it. Not to mention the day our government fires guns on civilians including children might not be too far away! Accurate portrayal as far as I'm concerned.

Elliot closing his eyes when they don't have guns works because they can always stop them by grabbing their bikes like in Dennis the Menace (1993).

now i agree with 2 things 1-that i know his plan was not to be a crochety old guy 2-that the guns being used as a threat to KIDS was a bad idea! now if there was just like a gun in the scence no biggy but really getting ready to threaten kids with a gun i think its better left out!
