J. Cole’s Platinum hit, “No Role Modelz,” is the highest-charting single from his third studio album, ‘2014 Forest Hills Drive.’ Co-produced by Cole and Phonix Beats, the fan favorite peaked at No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and interpolates Project Pat’s 2001 hit, “Don’t Save Her.” Phonix Beats recently sat down with Genius to explain how the beat was made.

@@riverbucknor2222 well first off producers have 100% ownership of their songs, BUT in most (specially Major) Label deals they have to give away all of it! It depends on the contract but in general they get paid one time for the beat and get a small amount for each play the finished song gets (if this is inside the contract). They don't have ownership of the lyrics and co of course, but they own 100% of their beats!

HYB Element you know when someone points something out and you can’t unsee/unhear it? The initial shock of that realization overrides your past memories of that image or sound. Then the fun begins. I think of it like a puzzle. You “find” a piece that was always there but now you get to play around with it and see how it fits differently for you now. Makes more of an emotional connection, especially with music. Our brain loves patterns and if you see something you didn’t notice before it lights up. If you’re a creative person those are the prime times to create. It’s a jolt of inspiration and appreciation for what was there and you didn’t even know it. We’ll go through our whole lives seeing less than 1% of what’s out there so when you see something new, you treasure it.

While I love everything we hear in these stories, occasionally I’d love to hear a bit more about the process of laying the lyrics down. Did the producer have to move bits of the song around to fit the lyrics, or did J Cole rewrite words to fit the arrangement. Love these interviews!

It’s a solo violin patch with the AM radio plug in he showed, phaser, delay, gated reverb, distortion or some kind of destruction plug in and maybe an envelope filter, but the phaser may be causing that envelope filter sound in there. It’s genius. So simple on your ear. This is how you make hit records.

This is one of the best deconstructed videos imo. The backstory that Phonix tells is interesting and comedic, the beat is actually broken down to its sounds and samples, the video production is quality, and the track itself is legendary. I wish more deconstructed videos were up to this quality. Thank you.
