The name of K-pop girl group Red Velvet references the different sides of its sound. Whereas the “Red” side represents a youthful pop style, the “Velvet” side stands for its more sophisticated R&B leanings. The five-person act’s biggest international hit to date, “Bad Boy,” falls into the latter category. Its ’90s-influenced production comes courtesy of the four-person team The Stereotypes, known for its work with Bruno Mars.

Kind of sad to hear from the creators that this kind of music is not well received in the states. I would definitely like to see more stuff like this... it has an unique vibe that you really don’t see in mainstream music.

They basically clarified just what exactly it is that makes K-Pop so much more interesting than American pop music for many people: it's the musicality--the more interesting melodies and more complex harmonic structures and progressions, unconventional song structure, blending of different genres, etc. American pop music used to have those qualities in the past, but in the past couple of decades it's been dumbed down so much and we almost never hear the same level of musicality anymore here that's on the same level as current K-Pop.

red velvet, in my opinion, has THE best music of newer girl groups. they incorporate rnb and hip hop influences into their songs, which are honestly my favourite kind, but they can also come out with bubblegum pop bops. their music just stands out to me from the current playing field, and I hope they keep serving us absolute bangers tbh

Another Red Velvet song that screams 90's R&B is a song called Automatic. That's probably my favorite song from them along with Bad Boy.
