Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

What a stunning TV show, less action but full of unpredictable plot, make our brain continue guessing what is next and next... Hopefully FX will highly consider continuing with season 2. Bravo....

1:34 I would like to briefly explain why the wives and daughters of samurai families at that time were trained in the martial art of using "naginata" instead of a sword or spear as a culture. In order for you to control a sword or spear on the battlefield, you need both big pulling forces and big pushing forces, but the main pulling force is enough for you to control the naginata. In addition, the grip of the naginata is in the shape of a long stick, which makes it possible to change the grip position freely, and it is possible to increase the rotation speed of the naginata’s tip. In other words, even with a minimum of input, a weapon developed to produce the same output as a sword or spear is the "naginata".

@@terraruins and even then, I doubt she killed anyone; upon rewatch she only hit the two with the butt-end of her naginata. Probably trying her best not to kill anyone and give them a "justified reason" for them to fight back with lethal force; as her mission was to either die in protest or die in an unlawful or despicable manner.

2:15 This swordsmanship is a martial art called "Iai” or "Iai-do”. In addition to arm strength, the speed of the sword and the flexibility of the arms and wrists are required. This scene would become a famous scene in Iai, comparable to the final duel scene in Kurosawa's film "Yojimbo (1961)”.

Allow me an idea, it's fine that there isn't a 2nd season but they should make a movie, one or 2 that gives the final idea of the series. By the end of the book, we do not get to see the ascension of Lord Yoshi Toranaga as Shogun. And the great fight of Sekigahara. So why not take it to the movies? It would be absolutely fabulous worldwide. A movie that culminates the series!

The novel ends, but the history of Japan is interesting from here on out.The battle at Sekigahara with Ishido, a grand location similar to Game of Thrones, thousands of extras, and a bloody battle scene alone could make a second season. In season 3, the battle of Ochiba (Yodo-dono) who turned around and led Toranaga to victory in the Battle of Sekigahara, and his son fights Toranaga at the impregnable Osaka Castle, the winter camp, the battle of the summer camp, and the novel is written in a foreign country. Although the original author is a human being, starting from season 2, Japanese historians and talented screenwriters selected from Japan will be involved in the production, so the Japanese culture will be doubled. In season 2, Ochiha will be played by Fumika Nikaido, who will be the main character. It will be interesting because he will be the main character along with Hiroyuki Sanada. The Battle of Sekigahara, the Winter Siege, and the Summer Siege will reach the climax in history. Also, Mariko-sama and Yabushige, who passed away in season 1, will appear in flashback scenes, so they will likely appear in season 2 as well. Seasons 2 and 3 are likely to have a larger global audience than season 1. Please consider making a season 2.

Agree to disagree. I originally didn't like it either, but the more I think about it, the more the ending made sense. It did feel anticlimactic but I still cried, laughed and thoroughly enjoyed it. Last Samurai, although it had a great ending, had a very basic white saviour narrative with standard emotional payoffs. It's a Very enjoyable movie, but this is a completely different kind of show. I appreciated the nuances and respecting the audiences intelligence.
