Nanana Congratulations. I sounds like hard work paid off. I would recommend the travel guides by Rick Steves, who you are probably familiar with. He actually got into travel to begin with because he had visited and fallen in love with the Lake District when he was young. He has very thorough books, including traveling cheaply. Have fun! 🇬🇧

I appreciate that the placement of this bridge is much more Ada accessible. People in wheelchairs or people who have mobility struggles can much more easily access both sides of the historic site without having to climb up or down stairs. They can feel more included and not discouraged from experience all the history they can. I like that It's flush across.
@eddierich6179
@eddierich6179 4 жыл бұрын
The sites themselves are still not wheelchair accessible, and as they are historical landmarks, it's not very logical to try and make them so in most cases. Maybe some parts of a castle or other very old site could be made accessible with minor adjustments, and in those cases, it should absolutely be done. In my opinion, the best way of make a historical site like this accessible to those in wheelchairs, things like this which make the grounds around the property accessible are a good start. Would be cool to see Augmented Reality used to help people "see inside" historic sites from the outside. Also if complete video and audio tours were available, or historical reconstructions can be made which are accessible and even include reanactment. Lots of options, but unfortunately there are some things which are very hard to participate in when you are disabled. (Also, ADA doesn't apply in the UK, they have their own laws regarding accessiblity).

It's a beautiful bridge but I feel the red is very gaudy. A dark, subtle green or grey would have looked much nicer with the landscape.

I’ve never been a fan of detracting from historical sites, for convenience reasons. But, I’ve come to understand just how valuable it is for people with accessibility issues, to be given the opportunity to truly enjoy these places, too. I wish the bridge was a more natural color, to blend in better than the red, but again, I think it was well thought out. I think the slate component on the walkway itself was a fantastic idea, and shows the respect you took in building and designing it. Wonderful job!

Apart from the fact that you chose the wrong example, as currently in Pompei they are making awesome discoveries every month or so, usually in Italy we don't spoil archeological sites and fascinating landscapes by building modern stuff right in the middle of the panorama like they did here. Especially when there is no other apparent reason than to save a few dozens stairs to the visitors.

I am 48 years old. This bridge when I cross it next year will be the third type of crossing I will have made. You can see the old bridge put in place which was when I was about nine years old. Prior to that there was another way using steps in the stone. So for the past 40 years they have had to address the cliffs eroding. They will do something else when the cliffs erode again.

The main problem with steel bridge is that they stretch and contract greatly to changes in temperature for as much as a couple of centimeters. That also apply to the base they sat on. Welding the two halves would cause the steel to bend and buckle. Most steel bridges are made to roll or to have some spaces to move.

Thanks for your comments, the gap in the middle is just 4cm and is a striking part of the design. It is intended to represent the transition from the mainland to the island, and from the present to past. It also adds an extra thrill to the experience! We hope to see you at Tintagel soon.
