Also I think most other drummers would have put tons of unnecessary fills in that song but Phil plays exactly what is required. Never tries to dominate the song and always supports the track perfectly

The Radiohead rythm section is the reason Thom, Ed and Jonny could fly so high. As a drummer and bassist, Colin and Phil have been great influences and teachers. Like JPJ and Bonham their greatness is measured in how well they support the others band members.

Great analysis. Have been a big fan of Radiohead since last millennium and can recommend watching their live shows released during COVID. Seeing Colin & Phil pretty much setting the tone together at the back of the stage while Thom, Jonny & Ed play some icing on top up front just shows that they know their roles in making complicated music sound effortless.

Great breakdown of Phil's iconic grooves. He definitely has that Ringo vibe where he only plays what is necessary to support the song. I always loved his Elvin Jones-like rolling swing feel on Pyramid Song

I really appreciated this one. How to play like... Phil is the kind of drummer who's persona shines through what he does. I think one has to be Phil Selway to play like Phil Selway :) There's no recipe. There are couple of things. One, that RH always pushed themselves to new things. And collectively, they grew. Phil just wouldn't have created this awesome drum arrangements without the band. Phil is a great guy. I don't know him, but I wish I would and I know I'm not alone. He even did his own songs and they are great! I mean... respect. Huge respect for what he does and how he does it. The drumming - his focused appearance. Technicality. And of course I love your view, Joe, since you are very talented and know music a lot more deeply as a musician - appreciate it very much. And... Pyramid Song. I don't know if it's the hardest one, probably not, but it was fascinating me for a long time. You meet with Radiohead one day, I know it.

Yeah Bodysnatchers is tough to keep going at consistent dynamics and keeping that tempo even is a challenge especially if one has been doing a lot of dancing around the pocket playing because "Bodysnatchers" is dead on from start to finish. There's no playing before or behind the back beat or switching it up. That said his decisions dynamically keep that song sounding loose and not mechanical. So yeah a tough thing to replicate and deceptively simple sounding but not at all easy to play correctly.

Great video! I’ve only been drumming for a bit over a year, coming from guitar, piano, and flute. I love it! It would be so rad to see you dissecting grizzly bear songs, especially the drums. Christopher bear is such an interesting drummer, I don’t even know how to describe him! Sometimes what he’s playing sounds totally random before it comes together into a sick groove, but it’s not. He reproduces that live very well.

Hi Joe, I've been following your radiohead covers for a while, pretty amazing, I tried to form a tribute to radiohead here in mexico but I never could haha, I want to make just one observation in "in limbo" (at "in limbo"? on "in limbo? not pretty sure), you missed the ghost reverb on the snare after the double kick, no offense, everything else pretty freaking nice, specially "where I end and you begin", a delight, thanks

Not watched yet but ive noticed he likes to start his fills on his snare hit? So either on 3 or on 7 in 4/4 or 4 in a 6/4. Most other drummers will play/start them over the last beat

I've been playing drums for four years. philip selway was one of my inspiration. I think phil is the best prog drummer the world has ever seen. Ps. Do you have listen to the new the smile album?

Phil is super inspirational. I have heard it! I dig it. Although I kind of prefer the live versions of a couple of them (I spoiled myself on those versions) 😂

Yeah, and trying to get any other drummer to play like this is virtually impossible. Ironically, the best drummer I’ve found that suited what I was going for and would play more simple looping beats was a jazz drummer.

Thank you, that means so much to me ☺️I technically wanted to start learning in drums, but I ended up taking guitar lessons first and then picking up drums on my own later. I still would like to think of myself as a drummer too and I think drums are one of the most exciting parts of my favorite songs.

Thanks Joe. Do you have any advice for someone that doesn’t play drums or have access to learn but wants to create rhythms like this in drum software? Is there any fundamentals i need to stick to?

Well, there’s sort of two ways to go: like Thom, you could make beats that are skittery, syncopated and almost unplayable by a human (except for Joey Waronker in Atoms for Peace 😂)…. Or you could focus on some basic ideas from acoustic drumming, such as the kick and snare rarely play together, crashes tend to hit together with the kick, and varying the velocity/loudness of snare notes to create accents and ghost notes.

Another thing with the Phil is, despite radiohead mostly being slow songs, he hasn't once to my knowledge done that rhythmic but annoying bouncing the stick on the snare mini fart roll thing that all drummers feel compelled to do on slow songs. Last time that was creative and interesting was in 1846, and Phil doesn't do it so for that I'm eternally grateful
