“I’m now aiming precisely at your groin…” On this day in 1974, director Guy Hamilton filmed Bond’s (Roger Moore) visit to gunsmith Lazar (Marne Maitland) in THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN.

Octopussy is so underrated! The only reason it ranks low is because the fans dont look at it properly. It has everything! Great villain, awesome henchmen, great girl, beautiful locales, amazing stunt work, a great plot, tense fight scenes and much more! It has goofy moments but on the other side it has one of the most dark and realistic plots in the series! When Bond confronts Orlov and the entire train and Germany sequence is as serious as Roger‘s Bond gets. FYEO and Octopussy are both very serious movies for Roger

Marne Maitland, who plays Lazar here, was a British-Indian actor who played supporting roles in many films. (“Bhowani Junction,” “Nine Hours To Rama,” and “Khartoum” are just some examples.) One of the many problems with this Bond film was not making better use of its supporting cast, including Maitland, Soon Teck-Oh and Richard Loo; not to mention its misuse of Christopher Lee! Having a tighter, more suspenseful script, greater tension between Moore and Lee, and better developed characters, would have made such an improvement! A better director certainly would have helped. So would leaving out Britt Ekland and Clifton James! Bond himself was poorly developed; one minute he’s beating up a woman, the next he’s getting knocked about by a dwarf. (And Moore’s ‘70s fashions - including that safari jacket - really date the film!) With regard to quality, this film had nowhere to go but up!
