"Christopher Robin was sitting outside his door, putting on his Big Boots. As soon as he saw the Big Boots, Pooh knew that an adventure was going to happen, and he brushed the honey off his nose with the back of his paw." -A.A. Milne, "Winnie-The-Pooh" (1926)
For nearly a full century now, the stories of Winnie-The-Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, and their friends have been delighting children of all ages - on the page, on the screen, and even on stage. But how many different ways can you bring the Hundred Acre Wood to the theatre? Well, at least eleven different ways, it appears. In this video essay, Zach Barr (they/them) looks at the 91-year history of stage adaptations of "Winnie-The-Pooh," and what they may tell us about future adaptations yet to come.

I remember seeing a Winnie the Pooh stage play during my early childhood. I believe this was around 1995-1996, but all I remember was the last act having a scene where Pooh was stuck in the air holding a balloon, and Christopher Robin helped him get back down after he asked for help. It looked pretty impressive seeing this costume character of Winnie the Pooh floating in the air, even though it was a cheap looking costume (I clearly remember the back of the actor's neck being visible.)

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. Your videos are so well-researched, so scholarly, it's a much more mature look at contemporary theatre than a lot of the more gossipy channels you usually see on KZfaq. I'm glad I found one of the only other people in the world that cares about the two Wild Parties other than me.

Even when reading A.A. Milne's original stories, I prefer to imitate the Disney voices because that's what I'm most accustomed to and I'm an impressionist.

I just happended to stumble upon this video, what a great retrospective! I had the pleasure of performing in and designing puppets for the 1957 Sergel adaptation.

So regarding the Heffalumps and Woozles in the Books and Plays were they assoctited with each other like in Disney or were they treated as seperated groups ?

This is an interesting detail that didn't make the video - Disney was the first adaptation to conflate Heffalumps and Woozles together as a sort of partnership. Woozles are only mentioned in Chapter 3 of the first book, and Heffalumps only in Chapter 5 of the same.

Thank you so much for this video and research! It could not have come at a better time. I’m currently researching and analyzing Fraser-Simson’s original “Hums of Pooh” song cycle, which is sampled for Slade’s production. Would you kindly point me to the direction of the university archives to also gather a look at his materials? And best of luck on your upcoming production! :)

Glad to hear there's another person researching Pooh! All the material on the 1970 play came from the L.W. Conolly Theatre Archives at the University of Guelph. You can contact them from the Archives and Special Collections page of their website.
