To be fair Megalania portrayed as a buffed up Komodo Dragon kind of makes sense when you consider that the Komodo Dragon is a buffed up Monitor lizard.

The biggest Megalania media that scared me as a kid was in one of the cryptid episode of Lost Tapes titled "Devil Dragon" on Animal Planet, where an amateur adventurer is trying to make a pilot episode of his 7 day survival reality show in Australia, find some human bones before then finding the Megalania's den and gets bitten. he treks his way to an aboriginal village before then his body succumbs to the infected bite mark and gets dragged into the dark of the forest a few miles from the village he's trying to get into

My favorite Megalania depiction would be from Land of list monsters/ Monsters we met. In it, the mega reptile certainly looks like a unique animal that it truly was instead made of being depicted as an overgrown Komodo Dragon. I think filmmakers should depict Megalania with a unique depiction of colors and patterns.

For some of the larger size estimates put Megalania back around when the Jeff Corwin documentary came out had the maximums reaching nearly 30 feet! But that one in particular had a habit of buffing animals for better visuals, but helped cement a lot of prehistoric creatures in my eyes back in the day. The giant spider bit in particular, of watching Jeff dissolve in front of my eyes haunts me a bit to this day.

While they sadly never show it on screen, the Animal Planet found footage horror series "Lost Tapes" had an episode about Megalania. *I think* they show drawings of it but don't remember it that well, but they usually would show over-stylized drawings of whatever cryptids they'd cover. But in the episode it's stalking and hunting a Bear Grylls wannabe survivalist trying to film a pilot for his show, believe it does bite him and wait out him bleeding out/dying to infection, so surprisingly a bit accurate for what's basically the Ancient Aliens of Animal Planet

Haven't watched La Brea, but now you're making me wish it should've been added in Far Cry Primal and maybe Jurassic World Evolution 2. Jeff Corwin's Giant Monsters was my introduction to the creature, and I loved it in Monsters We Met, technically it was the US version of the show titled Land of Lost Monsters, but I enjoy the original version more like all BBC shows, haha.

La brea is kind of confusing; it’s actually filmed in Australia but has California animals for some reason. Also surprised you didn’t bring up the fact that Komodo dragons can reproduce asexually, I don’t know how common it is but apparently if a female has trouble finding a mate cause they live on islands she can clone herself so that her daughter can pass on her genetics.

Fun fact: Komodo dragons are sort of more like a small megalania, than megalania being a giant Komodo Basically at the time V. komodoensis evolved, giant monitors, such as megalania were actually much more common, and V. komodoensis is sort of just a left over remnant, hence why it’s so heinously big compared to other monitors :)

Though they were an extant species, the Komodo dragons in the 1999 film “Komodo” were huge! At 4 meters long the most I think and were quite beefy thus behaved far deadlier than their realistic counterparts due to living on an isolated island being polluted by an oil company. Though the “bacteria bite” was used in the film and is inaccurate, these things were smart like normal Komodo dragons, if not, smarter! I think they would make a very awesome and excellent interpretation for Megalania, period!

I'm always really annoyed when animals like Megalania are reconstructed as just huger modern animals. Especially when the model quality is garbage. Just using the pop cultural preconceived notion of a modern animal and artificially inflating it, immature behavior and a terrible look for anything even vaguely in the business of teaching the audience. Really putting the "boy" into awesomebro fanboys. Pretty glad there's an increasing trend to avoid that recently. Bemused by the Isles attempt to have their Komodo-cake and eat it too, but the Isle is almost always good for mixing some quite interesting and some utterly baffling design choices together.
