Bar soap afficionados, this one’s for you!
Whether you champion the bar soap because of cost, packaging, travel convenience or availability, this video will help you use Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Bar Soap for almost every purpose as the Pure-Castile Liquid Soap.
Using the Pure-Castile Bar Soap for household cleaning takes a few extra steps. However, I know there are those of you out there whose priorities will gladly swap the extra time.
T
his video, “The Many Magical Uses of Bar Soap,” originally aired as a Facebook Live on the Going Green page April 21, 2022. Watch and learn how to grate, chop, and blend the Castile Bar Soap to use it for all manner of green cleaning - dishes, laundry, and an All-Purpose Spray for cleaning hard surfaces such as countertops and toilets.
Liquifying the Castile bar soap is difficult. That bar wants to stay a bar, which in most circumstances is good. You want your bar of soap to stay solid from first unwrap to final sliver. Who wants a mushy mess on their shower shelf?
The entire time I was trying to liquify the bar, I felt that the bar was fighting back.
The bar soap is not directly a solid version of the liquid soap. They’re very close but those few differences, which are designed to make the bar soap hard, make the bar soap very difficult to liquify. It doesn’t melt. (Word to the wise: don’t microwave bar soap.) It doesn’t dissolve readily. However, dissolve it I finally did.
Soap Cream
What I produced I have named “soap cream.” It is a white, foamy, thick gel, which thickens further the longer it sits. As I said, it’s ever trying to get back to a solid bar. This liquified bar soap is not the same consistency as the Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Castile Soap. However, it still cleans well and disperses in warm water so that it can be diluted for all manner of household applications.
Solid Bar Soap
There are many uses for which you can simply use the whole bar. You can rub your washcloth or your toothbrush or your dish brush directly on the bar of soap. I do recommend sectioning off a piece of soap to dedicate for toothbrushing.
Grated Bar Soap
Grate bar soap for such uses such as laundry or a foot soak. Keep grated bar soap in an air-tight container. One bar makes about 3 cups (720 mL) of grated bar soap.

Being able to afford your products and adjusting my families lifestyles with all these products have helped better our health. Therefore, this helps our planet/environment out better than what products we were buying, using and living with before. Question, what specific bar soap do you use for your household, when making the "all-purpose sanitizer spray," that is used around your kids and pets? Asking because some scents aren't recommended for pets and kids to be around?

Idk if you’ve ever talked about it BUT the Castile soap is amazing at cleaning makeup brushes and beauty blender sponges. There are DIY makeup brushes cleaners that use harsh degreaser dish soap mixed with olive oil but Bronners Castile soap takes the place of both those things.

Hi what advice would you give for using the bar soap on the hair if I don’t like ACV smell post rinsing? I realized that my hair gets extremely flaky if I don’t use any acidic rinse.
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner Жыл бұрын
Hi there- When using soap to wash hair, the key is to follow up with an acidic rinse. The soap has an alkaline pH which makes our hair kind of tacky/sticky feeling. The acidic rinse smooths everything down. I find the ACV smell (I dilute by half with water) dissipates after washing, but another option is Dr. Bronner’s Organic Citrus Hair Rinse. For my long hair, I dilute a capful in 1 cup of water and then pour it over my head and work it through and rinse thoroughly. Use less if your hair is shorter. I occasionally use lemon juice, filtered to remove all pulp, at a dilution 1/3 cup in 2/3 cup water. Lemon juice is not shelf stable though and needs to be kept in the fridge. When switching from conventional shampoo to soap, give your hair about 2 weeks to adjust. If you're interested in more tips, check out this article on my website, bit.ly/ShampooToSoap.

@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner

Hi Kerrie- I get it! On its own, the bar soap makes a great hand soap. If you're keen on a foaming pump dispenser. I would try a 1:1 ratio of the soap cream to water. I haven't tried this though, so if you do, I'd love to know how it works for you!

Hi I’ve been trying to use the liquid Castille and my dishes continue coming out greasy and it’s very frustrating… any tips? I’ve also added sissy wash to my solution to try to cut the grease but it’s still not working. Not sure if I should stick with the greasy dishes? Add more Castile? Washing soda? Add an extra step and rinse the dishes with vinegar? Just struggling here lol
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner 3 ай бұрын
Hi Alicia- The film on the dishes is from the soap's reaction with hard water. There are a couple of options for you. One is to switch to our Sal Suds Cleaner, which is a mild detergent and detergents don't react with minerals. To stay with the soap, this seems to happen less if instead of using a sink of soapy water, just use a dish brush with soap on it. Another trick is to use a vinegar rinse. After you've rinsed the soap off, dip the dishes in water with a cup of vinegar. Lastly, hand drying dishes will also help eliminate the mineral deposit.

Of all the products I've used in my life the one constant aside from water is Dr. Bronner's soap. A curious thing has happened in the last 2-3 years here in Japan though. The price has gone through the roof and the bottles have gotten smaller. Is there an explanation for this?

Hi there! Thanks for your support of Dr. Bronner’s over the years! It’s great to hear my family’s products work so well for you. Several years ago we began working with local Japanese company to make our products more accessible throughout Japan. In that process, prices were increased and more recently, global supply issues, as well as increased costs of raw ingredients, packaging and shipping have had an effect on product pricing for many manufacturers, including Dr. Bronner’s. What brushes do you recommend, for cleaning dishes and home?
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner 7 ай бұрын
Great question! Always opt for durable tools over cute, and choose tools that are cleanable and reusable. I head to the industrial cleaning section of home improvement stores to buy heavy duty brushes. I opt for microfiber cloths that are endlessly washable and reusable (or at least longer than the 10+ years I've been washing and reusing mine!) I look for mopheads that can be washed in a washer.

Can I use this for shampoo on color treated hair? Thank you
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Connie- Unfortunately, we don’t recommend our soaps for colored hair. The alkalinity of the soap opens up the hair follicles, where the color resides. The color will drain out and fade quickly. Colored hair needs acidic products only and soap, by nature, cannot be acidic. Only detergents (shampoo) can be alkaline. The Environmental Working Group (ewg.org) is a great resource for finding safer products for hair care, body care, and cleaning.

Can u make laundry detergent out of the bars of this soap??? If some one could please answer I'd love to know
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner Жыл бұрын
Hi Lynnetta- You sure can, although the bar soap works best in hot and warm water for this use. I also don't recommended it for HE (high efficiency) machines which use less water than standard machines. Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Castile or Sal Suds both work excellently in cold water and HE machines. In a food processor, combine one grated bar of soap with 4 c. (960 mL) baking soda. Pulse to blend. Use ¼ - ⅓ c. (60-80 mL) per large load. Add 1 cup vinegar to the rinse cycle to keep fabrics soft and absorbent. Hop on over to this post on my website for more on using Bar Soap around the house, www.lisabronner.com/bar-soap-dilutions-cheat-sheet/.

can i use the unscented bar soap as a dish soap and do it leave the dishes oily or the sink
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner Жыл бұрын
Hi Charmaine- Yes, you sure can! I've found the best method to be to rub a dishcloth or brush on the bar soap then tackle dishes. Another option is to add 2 Tbsp. grated bar soap into a sink filled with very warm water, then swish to dissolve. Soaps work by grabbing onto oils and grime and rinsing them away, so if you find your dishes are oily, try using a bit more soap.

From what I red, all over the sites, glycerin soap would be good - check it out: good luck
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner 6 ай бұрын
Hi Zerah- Glycerin is a natural byproduct of the soapmaking reaction. During the production of soap, oil molecules are turned into soap molecules, and glycerin, a component of oil, is left free-floating. At Dr. Bronner’s, we leave the glycerin in the bar as it contributes to the smooth after-feel of our soap. Other brands may add extra glycerin to their soaps. While a certain amount of glycerin is beneficial, glycerin absorbs water, and an excessive amount of glycerin can cause bar soap to expand and crack. Our bar soaps contain just the right amount of glycerin to give the benefit of smoothness to the skin while still leaving the bar intact over the course of its usage.

Dilute liquid castille soap burns my eyes if I wash my face with it and my private parts if I use it to shower. Is this normal?
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner
@GoingGreenwithLisaBronner 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sara- Irritation to the eyes is caused primarily from a difference in pH between our eyes and the soap. Our eyes are sensitive to anything that isn’t near neutral pH. Neutral pH is not possible without synthetic ingredients. Because our soaps contain no synthetic ingredients, we cannot make a tear-free formula. Castile Soap is safe for sensitive areas. I use the Castile head to toe, but on more sensitive areas, you need a lot less.
