The Bike at it's Website :www.marinbikes...
There are many versions of this bike, the one i bought and featured in this video is the Medium (M) size frame, with 27.5" wheels.
Ok, remember that video I made about what to look for in your old bike before you buy a new one?
Well, since I made that entire video on my bike, I think it’s quite clear that I was on the path to a new one.
And if no one else is doing it, then I’ll go ahead and do a bike check on my brand-new trail bike. The Marin bobcat trail 5. The 2018 edition.
I haven’t seen any reviews on this bike so far.
Instead of giving the details, I’ll elaborate on the main features that got my attention.
First of all, why Marin all of a sudden? Well, that’s simply because they made the bobcat trail 5, a bike which runs a one-by, or a single chainring up front. Sure, there are other bikes with single front chainrings, but those cost the amount you’d pay to fly in first class.
So… the bike has a one by at a considerably lower price point compared to other bikes with a single chainring, so Marin scores high marks in this field, and it’s one of the biggest reasons why I chose this bike.
Next comes the suspension.
The rock shox recon coil fork is, hands down, one of the best forks I’ve ever ridden. For a coil suspension fork, it’s super-duper plush.
In fact, when I found it was a coil fork and not an air fork, I though they were fibbing. It’s too plush to be a coil fork.
On this 100mm suspension fork, you can adjust the preload and rebound speed.
Not to mention the manual hydraulic lockout. Many people say that the pre-load doesn’t make much of a difference. I disagree. Also, here’s something important.
On my older bike’s fork, it says the stanchions are 32mm thick. While they were actually about 24. The recon, really is 32mm thick, and it doesn’t flex.
If there’s anything to say about this fork, it’s that the damping is very refined.
And If the websites are correct, this is supposed to be one of the best coil forks on the market.
I can agree with that. Another miracle on this bike is the handlebar width.
They’re 720mm. if they were any wider, I wouldn’t be able to fit the thing into the lift.
So this is kind of a miracle. The short stem also makes the bike more aggressive.
The aluminium frame only has external cable routing. This is fine, although at least one internal port would do.
The rest of the bike’s basically what you’d find on any other 1000 dollar hardtail.
You know, Shimano Altus brakes, an FSA headset, and a shimano Deore derailleur with a clutch. Oh, and do I have to mention the sunrace wide range cassette?
In any case, they all spell out fun.
Try counting the number of teeth on there. Personally, my favourite parts are the cassette and handlebars.
These parts, along with the one-by, scream out ‘Trail’ , and not XC. By the way, the cassette sounds wonderful.
So if you’re a rider who takes the fun line instead of the fast one, or a rider who likes it with less up front, this bike may be the one for you. Who knows?
It’s pretty impressive for a 1000 dollars.
There are only a few things that could be changed, like the seat post height.
Believe it if you can, this is the lowest it can go. And yeah. It hurts. Slightly. But the bike really feels good on it’s feet.
So thanks to you guys at Marin, and thanks to my local bike store.
Oh yes, thanks to you guys for joining me, and I hope you enjoyed today’s ride, and I’ll see you on the next one.

Good video, I am thinking of buying this bike as it is last years model and is 39% discounted, the 2019 bcat trail 5 is at full price, I can't see the justication if paying for the new model as it seems so similar. I also saw a bcat trail 7.5 2016 that is 45% discounted so I might even go for that as it has 27.5 wheels which I think look more proportional.

I laughed on the part about the seat post. you can cut it short to make it lower for your height. That is what I do my seatpost. By the way, we have the same frame.

I asked my bike store to do it when I was 15. They said that it would not be good for the way to distribution and could lead to a frame crack. Darn I wanna do it sometime

Yes, shops want to get rid of old stock to make way or new models, so the older a model is, the higher the discount. I feel the 2018 model is a good bargain, but the 2016 model is really tempting. I hope you make the best choice that suits you. Assess your riding discipline and weather you ride in, and look at the tires on the two bikes. Remember that the 2018 model's stanchions are actually thicker than the 2019 model's stanchions. This adds more strength and less flex. I have owned the 2018 model for more than a year. Only the tires and tubes have been replaced as of now. Don't rush, and make a video or tell me which one you buy, and also your first thoughts. I love huge comments... Cheers!

A big 27.5" (L sized) thank you to you, If you like to ride fun instead of fast, on even rough terrain, this bike is my recommendation. Since i put months of research in before buying a bike, this bike is a high standard one to reach or go past my standards at as low a price possible. So yes. Thanks, and I might post a long term review soon.

my local shop has a marin bc trail 4. how does that compare to the 5?
@collegedudeYT
@collegedudeYT 5 жыл бұрын
Well, the Bobcat trail 4 (2019) basically has 2 gears up front and one less gear at the back than the b'cat-5. The b'cat 5 has one gear up front. (simpler)The b'cat trail 4 has an SR Suntour XCM 100mm while the b'cat 5 has a rockshox recon. (higher quality, more adjustments) Remember that the b'cat 4 is 300$ cheaper than the b'cat 5. the b'cat 4 even has hydraulic discs... You can visit the website and check out the details... you can always ask your bike shop about which one is best for you... The 4 is basically more gears and cheaper components, which are therefore easier to replace... Cheers!

I have found any 29er hard tail is surprisingly quick. I have a 31 mile (~50 km) loop I ride after work in the summer. I spend most of the time on my hardtail in the 32 tooth middle(a triple-44-32-22) chain ring. Compared to my road bike, the time is 2:15 vs 2:30. The hard tail gives up 15 minutes to the road bike. This ride also has about 300m (1000') of elevation gain. Not world class speed, but the loop I do is to get exercise, I'm not trying to set a TT record. What does shock me, given about the same effort (I always use my hear rate monitor), the mountain bike doesn't give up that much time. If you were racing? 15 minutes is an eternity, sure. If you're just riding for your own pleasure? Who cares! Dump the knobbies and put some non-aggressive tires on it, that really helps reduce the rolling resistance. My next set of tires will be slicks or road tires, and I imagine, or am at least hopeful, that a proper "road" tire, even if it's 2" wide will knock 2-3 minutes off that 15 minute separation.

I am currently running WTB "Nano" tires on my hard tail. I've found it's "fast" on pavement and hard pack, when compared to a true off-road knobbie. Not the best for off-road, here in Colorado. Smooth trails, dirt roads and in an urban environment? Two thumbs up. Hope this helps!
