Really enjoyed this, thanks so much for making your time and effort free to us 👍👌👏. A really practical guide as to what to have handy for any type of marine survey and eventuality. I like the way you've assessed over years of experience which tools work the best and also which are the best and most practical to use when out on a job/up a ladder, under a hull, in a confined space etc. Do you give each client a preamble/disclaimer as to how any worthwhile and meaningful survey will potentially involve scrapping, probing and tapping/hammering the vessel? Bloopers 👍👍😄

Thanks for your comment Simon. A key part of any condition survey is to use non-destructive testing to establish the structural strength and integrity of the hull and its fittings. Occasionally something breaks under the application of a reasonable force and this highlights that the item concerned was no longer fit for purpose. Scraping away patches of antifouling helps reveal cracks, blisters and other laminate defects. Tapping the hull and fittings with a hammer helps identify voids, delamination, cracks and general deterioration and this is called percussion testing. What comes with experience is knowing how hard to hit it and with how big a hammer.

Thanks for the great information. All round, very well done. If I may make a suggestion, slow down a little bit when it comes to your rate of speech. I'm fluent in English, and it is my first language, but at times, I find myself not quite catching what you've said. Also, you've tongue twisted yourself once or twice 😂. Other than that, thanks again for making these videos. I'm finding them helpful as I start my Surveyors course. Keep up the good work 👏

Great video and helpful information for me. I am in the process of joining this field so found your channel as part of my research in youtube. I will be attending a 6 weeks training on Yacht and Small Craft Survey in Florida so long way to go. I have lots of experience handling boat but no experience as a surveyor so any advise for someone just starting? I guess good to start working with someone experienced but what if I don’t find anyone willing to mentor?

Welcome! Starting out as a marine surveyor, whatever your background, can be very daunting. Training is great, mentoring is also great, but getting both is awesome. Many UK professional underwriters insist on mentors for newly qualified surveyors. A great start is to read Paul Stevens' excellent book 'Surveying yachts and Small Craft'.
