Donald Glover explained on “Conan” that he fell on his first take for “The Martian” and Ridley Scott liked it so it was kept in the film. Here it is.

Exactly. It weaves itself into the movie so perfectly, and makes complete sense that Purnell would forget in his Eureka moment that he had dropped the bin in front of him. Yeah he trips and falls, but gets straight back up to refill his coffee. It's completely seamless. Even the camera stopping its tracking movement works.

Donald Glover's performance is brilliant, and the character's deeply personal because I KNOW/have known space and science geeks with that same abstracted quality when they're working a problem. The stories they tell on S-F convention panels can be just priceless (altho they're a lot more coherent than poor Rich Purnell----they've usually had some sleep going into cons...)

Feynman talked about this happening with his human computer group at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project. The computers were a room full of people all using mechanical calculating machines, working in parallel (a Feynman innovation). They'd discovered a simple arithmetic mistake while he was off site, and by the time he returned, they had figured out an elaborate way to correct the mistake without throwing away an expensive calculation. They had made up a smaller batch of calculation cards that they could send through their human computer pool faster than the main problem was calculating, then insert the correction in the main calculation down the line. Feynman freaked out when he saw the "chaos", but they kicked him (their boss) out of the room, and successfully used the scheme to get rid of the error. Naturally he was duly impressed, once it had been explained to him. He liked to point out that once these people were told the significance of the abstract mathematics they were working on, "THEY began to find ways to do it better...." He was immensely proud of that team.

To be fair it wasn’t considered at this point in time in the movie by most of the Astro science community because they didn’t even have the rocket to launch the supplies yet. Didn’t matter if the rocket met with the ship or went straight to mars if their was no rocket. Donald’s character simply cut out the middle man. The first plan was; crew comes home and send resupply rocket to mars. Then during the next mission which would be accelerated they would have the new team have a priority mission of rescuing mark. Process: about 4 years roughly. Donald’s plan; fuck the next mission, let’s just get this done now. Resupply the current crew instead and have them gun it at top speed back to mars. Mental health? These are the best we got. They can handle it. Time- less than a year.
@silentprotagonist042

The novel part of the "Rich Purnell maneuver" wasn't that they were doing a slingshot, it's that they were rendezvousing two spacecraft in the middle of that slingshot, instead of inserting into a stable orbit first. (And doing it twice, both at Earth and Mars.) It's a very risky idea; since the spacecraft is only flying past once, if you miss the launch window with the supply craft/MAV, you don't get a do-over. That's definitely an unorthodox idea, and it's believable that mission planners would miss it when they're in the mindset of "This mission is all ready so risky, lets keep everything as basic as possible." whereas by accepting the greater risk of the mid-fly-by rendezvous you can remove a lot of steps down the road and reduce the overall risk of the mission (but increase the risk to the rest of the crew, as they discussed in the movie).
