@Geoff Byrd there is a sound that is unique to the D41. The HD-28's were great, but the tone of the 41 Is just magic! I've honestly never played a better sounding guitar and I've owned a bunch. This guitar will give you anything you want. It responds to the lightest touch if you want to play quieter and has all you want if you want to dig in and play hard. There's tons of volume and the sustain just goes on and on. I highly recommend finding a shop or two that has a 41 in stock and go play them for yourself so you can hear what I'm talking about. I had cash in hand and my plans were to buy the HD-28, but the D-41 was so special that it's the guitar that came home with me.

@Geoff Byrd , mine is in Ambertone finish and it looks amazing with the abalone! The standard Sitka top looks great, but the Ambertone just really completes the look!! Hope you find THE ONE!!

@@bradh.689 Agree. I have a 2018 D-41. It is the best sounding and loudest guitar I have owned and likely ever played. I sold my 1988 HD-28 which doesn't even come close to this one. To be honest, I wasn't a big fan of the D-41 bling, and didn't think I'd like it, but the sound just blew me away. I'm now used to the bling as well.

Why do you prefer normal or rear? What difference does it make to the sound, forward vs rear vs standard? Not being a smartass, its an honest question.

Wow, that's the reason I want the Forward bracing.. I can tell the difference in the projection..

Listen to Spoon playing the amber tone model on the other You Tube channel, One Man's Guitar. Huge difference in tone. I don't know if it has to do with a difference in microphones used or just the difference between the two guitars. My experience with the two models (amber tone and aged toner) was that the amber tone was powerful but with a "sweeter" overall tone and the aged toner one was more of a "brassy" bright tone. I much preferred the amber tone sound and was so enamored of it I gave it a "forever home!" ;-)

LindyLoulie You are right it sounds wonderful but I’m not so sure it’s because of the paint that keeps the highs a bit

If you consider the 70's Martin sound, since they are so common as the "distinct Martin sound", then yes these are different. But if you compare to the pre-war Martins, these are not that different. Also, Maury tends to play over the soundhole which is not where most Martin players play. The guitar sounds much better played more toward the bridge.

Have you actually played one of these D-41s? They are simply incredible sounding. If you really like the straight braced sound (I can't understand why), there are lots of 70's Martins going cheaply. No one really wants them, and the reason Martin is going back to forward scalloped bracing. I'm pretty sure that my 2018 D-41 will compare well to any pre-war Martin. It certainly blows away my 1944 D-18, which is a cannon in it's own right.
