My GOSH Tony Shalhoub is gracious. For his favorite scene to shoot, after complimenting the show as a whole, he chose the one where Brosnahan was shining and he was barely present. For the Emmy he was awarded, he credited the costume designer. Be like Tony Shalhoub.

My favorite line will always be Abe’s when he’s chastising Joel in the bedroom for being unfaithful to Midge. “Nothing. You call me nothing. You don’t talk to me or look at me. If you see me on the street, you will cross the street whether or not there is a crosswalk present. Your pedestrian safety is of no importance to me anymore.” I have used this line so many times. 😂😂😂😂

The "secret sauce" is the compassion for all the characters on the show. They are all lovingly written and acted. No one is a trope of some political agenda. You almost instantly want to consider them family. That is rare.

This show is truly earnest, and that's not very common. Also, not a single character exists solely as a device to forward the story. They each have room to breathe, to grow, to exist, to evolve. One thing that struck me immediately was how the show dealt with the Joel/Midge situation. So many other writers and creators would have used it merely as inspiration for Midge to get her comedy start, then simply cast Joel aside. But life is more complicated than that. Love is more complex than that. Joel is flawed, but he isn't evil. He loves her, and she loves him. Like life, there are no easy answers.
@Tina-qp7py
@Tina-qp7py 4 жыл бұрын
Joel is a jerk not just flawed. He had a wonderful marriage with Midge which wasn't important to him. No sympathy.
@elowe81
@elowe81 4 жыл бұрын
@@Tina-qp7py And you're at liberty to hate his character all you want, of course. But the creators didn't play it safe or easy by turning their back on him or the complex feelings that exist between him and Midge. Like him or not, that's one example of what sets this show apart.
@Tina-qp7py
@Tina-qp7py 4 жыл бұрын
After reflecting on your response, I realized I don't like the script. Joel, Abe and Rose are indefensible in their irresponsible behaviors. Abe quits his job with no plan, losing their home, and Rose refuses to stand up for herself with her relatives to secure her financial future and their income from the trust. None of these plot points have anything to do with Midge's journey as a comedian. The parents and the ex- husband are weak, and I don't care about their characters. Their acting is great but doesn't make their story any more palatable. Also, the whole sub plot about Joel's club in Chinatown is unnecessary. I want to see more about the world of comedians in that era which excluded women and how Midge handled it. Also, I hate it when the script doesn't let Midge finish her comedy set and I miss the jokes.
@Nidhi-ll3yq
@Nidhi-ll3yq 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I completely resonate with your thoughts.
@elowe81
@elowe81 4 жыл бұрын
@@Tina-qp7py To be sure, a few of the plot points this season were less compelling than others. (While I'm still curious to see Joel's character progress, the nightclub story never really got off the ground.) But your notion that the side plots-especially those of her parents-have nothing to do with Midge or her comedy career, I'm going to respectfully disagree with. I think they have everything to do with it. Midge beginning a career in comedy is a lightning rod in the world of the show. It's THE event that sets other events in motion and keeps them moving. Midge is learning she is both like and unlike her parents. Her parents are learning they are like and unlike their daughter. Her father, while practical and manic, sees through the insufferable phonies in his field and aspires to precision, perfection, and meaning. Much like his daughter, he suffers no fools and refuses to settle. And Midge opens his eyes to how he's lost touch with the sociopolitical climate he claims to care so much about. And her mother? While she also likes the stability and reliability (to a degree) of an ordered life, she will not be pinned down, and bucks against her restraints when pushed too far-also like Midge. Nearly all of Midge's comedy career and joke writing is her working out her life experience onstage. Unpacking, contemplating, reflecting. It's quite literally art imitating life. We see where Midge's head is when she's behind the mic. (Obviously, we the viewers can more easily tell it's a team of polished show writers at work when Midge riffs so perfectly off of something that has JUST happened to her moments before she takes the stage. But we're willing to suspend disbelief, because the show story lines are much better suited for TV episodes when framed neatly in this way.) I think you sell this show sort if you describe it simply as a woman who becomes a comic...and also her family is in the show, too. No, no. The show is about how one tiny little world is upended-and will never be the same-because one woman did the absolutely unexpected. Like ripples in the water, that inconceivable decision changes all those around her. And the spreading waves create new ones, some of which head back toward Midge herself. Everything is connected. It's all one story.

Also the secret of the mass success is the message that failure is a normal part of life. If you grow up thinking failure is not an option and suddenly you see the characters going through various crises and still coping in certain ways, adjusting and moving on, it's so liberating! It's like forgiveness to yourself - ok I failed but I'm moving on. And also encouragement- if those characters got through soo much, my problems are not really that big. It's amazing in the way that series can change people's lives, it's like a TV version of counselling ♡♡♡

Joel’s gone from a nervous kid to a solid, loveable man. Benjamin is freakishly, weirdly, imperfectly perfect. I worry about Astrid having a nervous breakdown. Moishe and Shirley drive me mad, but their hearts are always in the right place. And OmG Lenny Bruce. I love his irreverence and the banter with Midge is pure chemistry resulting in GOLD. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Why is this show so beloved? Because Amy-Sherman-Palladino writes storytelling without the dark cloud following you throughout. Do viewers searching for something new to watch think , “Oh boy, death, violence, drugs, betrayal, murder, evil plots. Let’s watch!” Mrs. Maisel is multi-faceted. Sure, it has death, violence, drugs, betrayal, murder, and even evil plots (Sophie). But look up “entertainment” in the dictionary. They’re soon to add Ms. Palladino’s name!

The fact that so much talent was reduced to a side character call girl makes me ill. She should have been a star a long time ago!

I think the characters in the show really are relatable to so many people. Life generally DOESN'T turn out like you thought it would. I didn't think I'd be a divorcee, then a widow, with 4 sons. But that's what happened. And something about watching Midge makes me feel brave and I'm NOT brave. I have to work really hard but I kind of think of her in that first episode especially and I won't compromise doing work that makes me happy. I'm an artist and a spell candle maker and I have a really really cool work life like she does but it's not without it's trial and error and failure. "Starving artist" is a real thing and like her I have to just work and work and work and when you finally start to see the fruits of all that labor and failure and then success the feeling is unmatched by anything.

Other than a wonderful cast - great writing - attention to detail yadayadayada - the music sets a tone and adds authenticity to the settings, storylines and also tells a story of it's own. Whoever was calling the shots in song choices really knew the era and what they were doing - I mean Holiday For Strings, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o7eEpsyhnc-VoIk.html ...a perfect choice.... as was I'll Take Manhattan when Midge says goodbye to the apartment. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtRgaa6Tup2Zc2w.html This show is a gem..and just how good is Rachel Brosnahan...and the ensemble?
