This is genius comic timing from MTM. Their chemistry was amazing.

Probably my favorite all time scene from The MTM show. You have to be a good singer to know how to sing this badly. Brilliant show, brilliant acting and Chemistry between MTM and Ed Asner, and of course brilliant writing. Great show no wonder it’s considered one of, if not the best, sitcom of all time.

I still watch this classic show everyday on the Decades channel. It has joined the other classics where the whole cast is deceased. Gordy (John Amos) is the only one still living. 😔😔

Ed Asner was just a brilliant actor. People don’t realize how expressive and nuanced his acting was. He could manipulate, cajole, intimidate, be caustic, sarcastic, lovable, devious, terrifying,... or drop dead funny. Asner could go from one expression and emotion to another, in a flash, and do it brilliantly. Like Harrison Ford, Ed Asner had wonderful facial expressions, and major acting skills. Here’s to Lou Grant. The best boss ever.

I just started getting into The Mary Tyler Moore Show since September 2021 and I have to say as much as I liked Ed Asner in other things I had no clue how truly skilled and amazing he was as an actor til I started watching this show. That cast was one of a kind too. Like Mary and Ed, Ed and Ted Knight were also an incredible comedy duo. Remember the scene where Lou tells Ted he wasn't nominated for the Teddy award? Brilliant!
@poetcomic1 Жыл бұрын
when first suggested for the part they it was a CRAZY idea. Asner was a classic 'heavy' and UNcomic chaacter actor.... only those who knew him knew how funny he was.

@@poetcomic1 Yes, and I remember him saying that after MTM, people said "can he do drama? he's a comedy actor!"

@@poetcomic1 Same thing with Ed O'Neill when suggested for auditioning for Al Bundy. Moye and Leavitt thought there were nuts because Ed never did comedy and mostly played heavies and other dramatic roles.

Such an incredible scene - where Lou's adoration of Mary won't let him directly criticise her awdul rendition - so he saves her by making her appear to be joking with him as a way of stopping her from appearing silly to others, Brilliant acting and writing!

Was she that awful? MTM could sing and dance in real life, of course, so if she sang badly, that would be acting, too.
@Vejur90002 жыл бұрын
@@leoray1234 Mary was intentionally awful in this scene. That’s what made the scene so funny. Remember she’s playing a character here, not herself. Both Mary and Valerie were dancers and seasoned actors.
@leoray12342 жыл бұрын
@@Vejur9000 I would say she was intentionally campy. If she wanted to be truly awful she could’ve gotten the pitch wrong, but she didn’t.
@Broadwaybuff-pi1qg7 ай бұрын
@@leoray1234 The humor is no that she couldn't carry a tune but showing how innocent "mary richards" would try to sing a sultry torch song. And she did it beautifully.

Thank you so much for posting this brilliant scene. I grew up watching this series when it was originally broadcast, and it was always one of my favourite shows. The writing, the cast and the directing was perfection. And I remember howling with laughter the first time I saw this. Mary was usually the straight woman on the show, while the other actors like Valerie Harper, Cloris Leachman, Ted Knight, Betty White and Ed Asner got to be the funny ones around her. But MTM was a brilliant comedian when she had a chance, and she slays in this scene. Just as she also did in the final scene of the Chuckles the Clown episode, trying not to laugh during the clown's funeral. She gets the way shy, respectable, sheltered Mary Richards would sing a torch song like this, even when trying to make it smokey. Ed Asner is equally brilliant here. They were so good together. Some of my fondest memories of those years are watching this series.

Took several seasons for MTM to win the Emmy (Teddy?), she learned the importance of ensemble on DVD & as she said, this was the best 1 ever.

+Diego Thorrens: OMG, I've heard this in my head for so long - Mary's version - such a classic moment, with Lou, giving Mary 'confidence' as she's singing in the most cliché'd of ways, - 'emphasising words with hand gestures. This is such a good, hard laugh for me, thanks so much for posting. 'Tear my heart out, baby,.sing it out' - Lou Grant

I love the MTM Show, but one major thing I am disappointed about it is the fact that Mary doesn't really sing or dance in this show like she did on the Dick Van Dyke Show. In fact, Mary is supposed to be a bad singer in this series. I would have loved to see a thing like an annual WJM Talent Show episode where Ed, Mary, Gavin, Ted, and Betty White perform. Maude and Laverne & Shirley used to do musical episodes as a change of pace.

Georgia Engel sang and danced Steam Heat also on this same episode (it's on KZfaq) because she liked to let her co-stars shine, but Mary herself didn't want this to be a repeat of what she did on Van Dyke show.
