When Zorro (Antonio Banderas) loses control of his horse, he removes the guards from their own horses one by one.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Martin Campbell, well-known to the action arena after 1995's GoldenEye, teams up with executive producer Steven Spielberg to bring the first Hollywood production of creator Johnston McCulley's Zorro in over four decades to the big screen. With scenic 18th century Mexico as a backdrop, Anthony Hopkins plays the original Zorro, a.k.a. Don Diego de la Vega, intent on revenge after rival enemy Don Raphael Montero (Stuart Wilson) murdered his wife and took his daughter, Elena. After being imprisoned for 20 years, the fabled hero removes his mask and takes on a tarnished young apprentice, Alejandro Murieta (Antonio Banderas), to infiltrate Montero's plan to take control of California from Santa Anna. A boisterous outlaw with his own desire for revenge, Murieta works with Diego to avenge his brother's death by the sword of Montero's right-hand man, Captain Harrison Love (Matt Letscher, in his big screen debut). After Diego's extensive training in swordfighting, discipline and manners, a new Zorro appears wreaking vengeance and stealing the heart of a now-grown Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones). A sizable summer hit, the film served as Zeta-Jones' stepping stone to leading lady status as the high-spirited heroine.

@@ELViejito100 Yep, 1846-1848, which the US had adopted what is now known as the Civil War uniform, that Captain Love was wearing. Meanwhile, the original Zorro was fighting for Mexico's independence against the Spanish aristocracy, hence the Spanish uniforms at the beginning. Once Mexico had gained its independence, Zorro "retired" and at least a quarter century had passed, by which time the Mexican army had adopted its own uniforms by then. Little details like that really set apart the production crew, and show a particular care they take in making a movie.

Probably the best horse stunt ever... and I've seen all the movies with John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. Westerns are maybe my favourite way to get rid of sadness...

Fun fact: Antonio Banderas did every single stunt in the movie except for one. The part where he swings over the horse and kicks the guard at 0:51; that was the only stunt that Banderas' agent wouldn't let him do. All the other stunts in the movie are done by Banderas himself.

Ok, I can believe that Antonio Banderas did most of the scrappy, fighting stunts, yes. But you are not telling me that he did everything, like for instance that 15-20 foot drop onto his black steed where the steed decides to move at the last minute, leaving him to splat on the ground. You know, the one after he escapes from the church.

False. When it's a close-up, it's Banderas. When you can't see his face, it's a double. This ain't a Hong Kong action film. Hollywood insurance policies are very strict when it comes to actors doing their own stunts, and Banderas isn't known for performing such physical feats. Don't believe everything you read in the IMDb trivia.

I'm pretty sure he didn't do the "tree gymnastics" when fighting Rafael and Love around the giant map of California (before the fight with Elena). I remember seeing a behind the scenes film where it shows Antonio jumping to grab a branch, but then cutting as he just swings back and forth feebly.

The Story of Zorro takes place in the city of Los Angeles, in the province of California, in the Viceroyalty of New Spain (Mexico) 🇲🇽 in the last years of Spanish rule. The character is Novohispano, later he would become Mexican 🇲🇽 he was represented as a masked vigilante who defends the commoners and indigenous peoples of California against corrupt officials and other villains. Some adaptations of the films and novels of the history of Zorro have located it during the Vice-royal era of Mexico.

Heavy padding combined with knowing the correct way to fall. There is a surprising amount that can be done that way. Also, whenever they fall out of shot, there is probably a pad there for them to land on.

Zorro's horse is actually a Friesian... You can tell by the feathering (hair) around his hooves and the heavier bone structure.

Okay, if you see the guy who is essentially the Mexican Batman riding off with two of your men's horses and then turn around and see all the other horses without riders, I think any reasonable person just slows their horse down, turns around, and goes home. You are clearly outmatched.

I don’t think I understand the plot of this scene.... (in context) After Zorro steals the map and fights Elena in the stable, we see him jumping out of a tree after the army has ridden past? and whistles after a horse. The horse then comes to him and he attempts to ride off but falls down and has to reclaim it by taking out the army from behind one by one (that part is awesome). But is he stealing one of their horses that’s run away? I don’t understand

Raffi N My guess is that he hid his horse away from Monteros house and that he used the cover of night (it was night the previous scene and now it’s morning in this) to do his act. This looks like sometime has passed. Maybe a few hours

It is ridiculous that the daughter of a man in such a hierarchy would appreciate a bandit-looking man, approaching her being alone in the middle of the street, no matter how well she knows how to fight, and regardless that he's actually a rebel, not a bandit. I am sure my Latin American continent people would tell me: "es que lo lleva en la sangre!"; no, she does not carry it in the blood: you Latin Americans with Native American origin are the most racist that I have seen, outside my own country in the far south.and that is likely what the creators of this movie were taking advantage of when making the movie. So no, it is not that the oppressed are always good and the oppressors are always evil, of course the oppression itself is always evil, but it is not that the whole of that people are good or evil, as the movie portrays. Movies are just lies adorned with many lucid details. Good and evil are learned and developed, not "in the blood".
