Dude, why would the local government grant Chinese dimploma if the private school teach American cirriculum which does not teach Chinese langauge arts or Chinese history? Should us government grand GED and American high school dimplomas to those who can't not read/write English at the high school level or know nothing about US Constitution or any knowledge of US history?

I taught English for ten years in Beijing. Loved it at first but over time you discover what it is really like to live in China. It certainly isn't any place too grow old. Deception is the order of the day. Disinformation all the time. Chinese ethics is an oxymoron.

I was living in China for nearly 4 years as an ESL teacher and recently moved back to America. I left for many of the reasons you stated. I just couldn't deal with it anymore.

I left China for one reason : my children. Which can be divided into two sub-reasons 1) pollution. I could no longer cope with my making them breathe, eat and drink poison 2) Chinese education, aka nationalist brainwashing + destruction of individual thought and sense of responsibility + animal-like spirit of competition. Now for an idea of a subject you could cover in the future : how mixed families (Chinese + foreigner) cope after moving out of China, and how the Chinese side of the family sees it (mine see my wife as little short of a traitor for leaving to a far-way country and not being there for them).

@@realdeal7530 When I told my widowed dad I was moving to China he was willing to pay for the first (one-way) ticket available himself lol. Of course he was going to miss me, but his son's interest and chance to discover a whole new world came first. "Traitor" is maybe a bad wording, more like "ungrateful" or "unworthy". It's a whole different culture, where collective comes ahead of individual, and where family ties and hierarchy are paramount. Children are expected to support aging parents, including financially (in part because pension plans for the older generation aren't exactly comprehensive, but imho even more so for cultural reasons). This can already be a difficult situation for children who moved to a big Chinese city and can't be there physically for their parents on a regular basis, so imagine when they moved to another continent. In my specific case, the wife actually has a didi (younger brother) who lives with the parents and is doing an amazing job at burning the family's savings (which are of course owed exclusively to him, the male descendant). So, as much as I love the in-laws in spite of their flaws (and there actually are some aspects from their worldview that we could learn from, imho), we've made it clear to them that they won't see a cent from us. Hence the extra resentment. Anyway, I don't hold a grudge against them, they grew up in a different world (one that is actually starting to be challenged by the younger Chinese generation itself). I do hold some grudge against my parasitic brother-in-law, but that is another story. What saddens me is that they (mostly the father-in-law, in fact) aren't giving my wife any moral support for her massively brave choice of moving to Europe, and that they don't seem to fully grasp that the main motivator for this decision was our children - their grandchildren - NOT pure self-interest.

I can say that as a fact, they often don't teach you about history or politics because math and language are the primary education we focus on.

I left China in 2017 despite having a successful 8 year design career there. I was starting to feel all the anti-foreigner pressures, both from government and citizens, plus the crackdown on VPNs, difficulty in banking and getting/keeping a home. Never coming back (maybe for visiting friends but not staying). I am SouthEast Asian and not white, and could be mistaken for a South-chinese so I dont think its an anti-west only thing, generally for all foreigners.

In 2017, I went there with a white colleague for six months for business and leisure. I felt the hostile attitude toward foreigners. After the trip, I quit my job because my boss asked me to go back to China again. It's not news that Chinese police push suspects off a building or a bridge. Then the cause of death is depression.

Which part of China did you visit? China is vast country and the people's altitudes differ with each region. The Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities are more cosmopolitan and generally more friendly towards foreigners.

I’m Chinese and hearing about how people are forced out out of china breaks my heart. I really don’t understand why the government is doing all this. Turning people who genuinely loves china away is completely contradictory to what our culture has been about... Without this channel i would never come close on hearing things like this, thank you for bringing the information in the open

因为这些人没有正经的工作，中国政府不会给一些在中国教英语的loser发签证的，就像美国一样，你要申请h1b，总不会凭借清洁工的身份申请吧，博主就因为没有拿到签证才走的，其实中国人会感到很庆幸，因为中国要的是high skill，而不是在中国混的loser。

I don't think the Chinese government was ever interested in having non-Chinese foreigners live in China. There is just too much risk of dangerous attitudes and a lack of control for the Party. They were interested in using foreigners as "temporary workers" (i.e. language teachers), but I don't think they were ever keen on having foreigners actually move to China and start living there on a full-time basis. I think there is also some subtle, unrecognized racism underlying this. Ask people on the street whether China should grant Chinese citizenship to non-ethnic Chinese persons...

I think you mean non-Asian foreigners. There are plenty of non-Han people in China (hell, they even were the government of China for 500+ years) Yi, Qiang, Miao, Manchu, Mongolian, Viet, Korean, Uygur, Turk, Kazak, Tibetan... All with Chinese citizenship. It does a disservice to the minorities and indigenous peoples of China to erase them from discussion.

Xenophobic is the better term as their against any not Chinese. Racism would be hating all Whites and Africans but being ok with all Asians. In Asia Xenophobic seams to be more the case. If it China vs any other Asian group that is tribalism. Racism is a fairly new thing from situations where one could not tell what tribe or country people were from. To be clear races are white, black, yellow, brown in the old often considered racist division (at my time 70's it was anti-racist songs listing all colors are wonderful and stuff like that) It get sort of stupid though when white is still white but your expected to use African, Asian, Australian Aborigine.

My wife is Chinese (born in Thailand). We’re both learning Chinese. We explored the idea of settling in China and build our relationship with her extended family. We’ve visited a few places over the years and I sensed that it’s not possible to have a decent live in China, or develop ideas or become successful (before being taken down by some powerful competitor). We looked at the schools too. Frightening places! We investigated homeschooling and Montessori education and hit against a mountain of disapproving bureaucracy. The Chinese themselves were studiously ignorant, not only about their own country and politics but about the world at large and couldn’t help or advise (oh we have plenty of freedom, we’re not being observed, Mao made China great, etc.). And unbelievably filthy, in mind and in body (unless you’re kind of well off and have your own private expensive apartment). It’s a soulless country, all technology, mindless traditions, no real values or consideration for others (except for practical reasons...) And then I re-remembered Taiwan... a country that had a close relationship with South Africa during the Apartheid years. In my mind I thought they were a pariah state (I’ve been wilfully ignorant too). So I went to go see for myself. Wow, talk about chalk and cheese. Taiwan is a refreshing, progressive, global,and cosmopolitan country. Clean and organised, like Japan. They welcome foreigners (on the whole). They learn English. Their schools are progressive (or at least try to be). They are fairly knowledgeable about the world. They care about each other and the environment. They are scrupulously clean (very Japanese, I felt). I’ve oversimplified of course, and didn’t get to explore either country deeply. But my gut feelings are that we should avoid China (and be ultra wary of China) and embrace and support Taiwan.

Taiwan was part of Japan (or, occupied by them) for much longer than Taiwan was part of mainland China over the last century and a half, maybe that has something to do with how they keep the place up. I have heard that China is like one big New York City; dirty, same mean attitude, and even more corrupt and aggressive. Perhaps there is a limit to how many people you can just pile in on top of each other...

I also have been here 8 or 9 years. Two kids with Chinese wife. Last summer my visa renewal application was rejected. In fact, they told me not to even apply. The reason? No reason given and I only a week left on my visa. It was a huge ordeal to get back in, but it was a warning siren. I believe what was said that it is a message from the govt. They don't want us here anymore. Now I am looking at options for my family. It seems that the USA doesn't want foreigners either and I don't' want to bring my family into that kind of atmosphere. It's a pity because there seems to be no rational explanation for such xenophobic behavior in China as well as in my home country, the United States. So where to next? Maybe Equador?

@@radoinezoubir3370 I suspect that economic growth in China was largely due to greedy western capitalists moving their manufacturing businesses from the West to China because of cheap labor and lack of environmental regulations. The western businessmen basically sold their companies for profit, no morals at all, as long as they make money, even if they hurt their own people due to increased unemployment in the west, thanks to factories closing down and people losing their jobs.

I've lived in China for 5 years.. i dedicated my time to learning Tibetan Language and started a non-profit to distribute their rare herbal formulas from the himalayas to the west, and we take the profits to restore their ancient temples and structures that the government tries to destroy.. But on Jan 25 i will be leaving China for good, never to return again.. i cant go anywhere with my Tibetan friends without being stopped by police, searched and even called a terrorist by local Chinese for supporting the Tibetan people.. I could go on for days and day about why i will never return to China honestly..

@Basil Rathbonez If you've actually read anything substantive on tibet you'd know that they declared independence at behest of the british & friends while china was ravaged by the same occupying powers. You'd also know that tibet was a religious feudal society akin to medieval europe, not some freedum utopia. The CCP is what it is, a ruling oligarchy using whatever tools at its disposal to keep in power; the world isn't a rosy place that they teach simpletons. It's really hilarious when ignoramus try to "educate" the actually educated by spewing western agitprop.

My father was born and raised in Harbin 3rd generation. The local Chinese government killed his younger brother because he pointed out a neighbor who was stealing. It turned out he was a relative of some low level official the my father was arrested and my grandmother was beaten my grandfather was taken away and was gone for 3 years. Thats the China that my family knows. My family was Russian (BIG NOSE) and so automatically a FOREIGNER.

Ethnic Russians have lived in China's northeastern and northwestern regions since as early as the late 19th century and "White Russian" is one of the 55 recognised ethnic minorities of China. They are PRC citizens and hold PRC passports. With the exception of some isolated farming communities in northwestern China, most ethnic Russians in China are, for all intents and purposes, culturally and linguistically assimilated.

@@timeless8135 don't the sun do stuff to your skin? I mean, exposing your light-skin under the sun for a long period of time will cause your skin to redden and peel off... and in the long term it will tan, and also aged considerably, very wrinkled and old looking hand.

@@xponen Yes, you are correct , but I never worried so much about my hands. I would cover up the rest of my body though , never had a problem with my hands though. Having said that , I run a tile and stone installation company and my hands get pretty hardened from moving rock and stone all day .

This is I think the 4th time they got to around this stage. They backed out all the previous times. Would be cool if Trump and South Korea can get them over the hump this time.

Our family are Han Canadians, We left China in 2015, after living there for 11 years. We home schooled our daughter in China. We found that local schools in China are teaching kids pretty twisted life attitudes even from kindergarten, kids are often taught to be narcissists. I also had kidney cancer, that Chinese hospitals misdiagnosed it twice as something else, luckily it was finally caught. We have a local chinese friend who had lymph cancer, he had a hundred CT scans and the hospitals never gave him a protective apron for the procedures. He also found that new cancer drugs are 3 times more expensive in China, he ended up smuggling his own drugs from Taiwan and Hong Kong. We know a doctor in China, the hospital chief ordered her to add Chinese medicines in her practice for the sake of nationalism (love your country). Doctor salaries are very low that the custom is to supplement their incomes with gifts from the patients. It is the de facto custom. People in China are not well taken care of. The main reason is that the power hungry Party has to keep control of every sector. There is no real medical association, just the Party controlling everything, no real education association, just the Party.

It's democratic system completely obliterates the stupid lie of the Chinese Communists that Western democracy wouldn't work in mainland China. This is old news. I work for a Canadian company that in the 1990s chose to invest heavily in the Chinese market. They opened a large, brand new, very advanced plant which they equipped with the world's most advanced technology in their particular field and hired and trained locals. For publicity they sponsored TV documentary shows , river cruises, the works. Then one day, poof!, just like that, it became impossible to sell or distribute their product. Money started haemorrhaging. This went on for a while until it could no longer continue. The company cut its losses and sold the whole enterprise to Chinese interests for a symbolic amount. Miraculously, production and sales restarted and today, building on this stolen (let's call a spade a spade) technology, China has become the world's largest producer of this field.

CaptHollister About the same time, a Chinese manufacturing company was in trouble and announced their wish for foreign investment. An Australian answered, the deal was that, he would buy half the company and run it for five years, then he'd sell his half back to them and leave. Soon after the company was back on track and making good profit. Five years later he took his half share - which was a substantial amount - and went home, and soon after the company was off the rails again losing loads of money. They asked him to go back for the same deal, but he said, he'd prefer to work there as an employee for three years, but for a massive paycheck. So off he went and the company was making money again. Then the powers-that-be at the company decided to screw him over; the cops had him arrested, and during his detention, a new law was rushed through the system to make him guilty of whatever, and he as charged under that very law, and was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was freed after quite a few years though. As a fellow Australian I can't help but suspect that the company was angry about a foreigner who's able to do what they could not do, being the Chinese master race notwithstanding. But their ability to set off that chain of event that led to his conviction and incarceration can say something about the country nonetheless.

That's what the Rabbi told my Grand mother in early 1938. My Grand mother took her 4 children - 3 daughters and her son. The daughter who was then age 5 later became my mother. They traveled to Tehran - IRAN Grandfather stayed behind to give the appearance that all was normal. He was picked up by the Gestapo whilst attempting to leave some six weeks later. __ People would give anyone up to the Gestapo for the reward of DM. SO .. Best to leave as early as possible. The world is again becoming unstable. Corporate Greed and Debt created by capitalism is the major cause, as it creates a big division between the working class and the corporate class ... Now that China got what they want from foreigners and their manufacturers, they have less use for them. I have always thought that it is very short sighted of companies to manufacture in China. China has consistently been reverse engineering the designs and manufacturing process and bringing to market their own competing products. Now all of these companies have more competition to face coming from China. I used to work for GM as a software developer and we took some steps to protect our IP from reverse engineering during manufacture in China, such as encrypting vehicle firmware. But still you see China's brands continuing to use more and more of our technology, and more and more likely there will be some break out Chinese car brand in the US. I wouldn't be surprised if GM goes bankrupt again thanks to a Chinese car brand that they helped bootstrap.

Look at SsangYong or however the fuck you spell it. A good friend of mine (He's a mechanic) works at an "MG" main dealer and they are most of their work these days. All they are (From my knowledge) are chevrolet clones. Even as a HGV Mechanic myself, I am noticing more and more Hino trucks, which are Japanese(But, from what I can tell, mostly soured from China), creeping into the industry, although, on the truck side of things, many firms stick to one name brand. It's a shame to see our technology stolen without repercussion, due to their shitty government and ways but also the greedy business men who do not care for us, or realise what will happen. As far as I'm concerned, fuck them. Which is a shame, because it's an astonishingly beautiful country for the most part.

I myself live and work in China (little insulted because I actually work for EF) and I'm in a long term relationship with a Chinese man. Everything you have discussed and pointed out I have seen or in some ways experienced, despite your generalization of being "an airhead ESL teacher". I came here with a real love, respect and drive to live here long term. I regularly have this discussion about what businesses can do to try to help foreigners feel more welcome and able to integrate into life here. Each month it becomes more difficult. I regularly encounter not being able to rent an apartment in my city or even stay in a hotel while traveling because I'm a foreigner. I've been struggling like many others have mentioned to send money home and my boyfriend and I have the discussion all the time about what we will do when our kids are old enough for school. Not all of us ESL teachers are young, dumb and clueless.

The speedo actually works perfectly, but when the bike detects the rider is not wearing gloves it just assumes the rider is still getting ready and this speed data coming up the cable must be an error, because obviously no one would be crazy enough to ride around on the road in China or anywhere else without gloves. The ECU is basically saying "Does.... not.... compute"

I left Shenzhen a year and a half ago, after having lived there for almost 5 years. There were two main reasons. First and foremost was my health. I developed a brutal chronic cough that only got worse in China. Secondly, it became 100% illegal for me to sing songs for side cash in China. I had a legit work Visa and taught music at some of the top international schools in Shenzhen. However, even with this Visa, I could not legally make side money performing music in China. Basically, I had to choose between my health and my music or life in China. I guess there is one more reason - home ownership. It's quite difficult owning property in China as a foreigner. Now I own something with my brother in Chicago, something that was nearly impossible for me in Shenzhen as a single foreigner.

Really? A chronic cough from Shenzhen? I live in Xuzhou and the pollution up here is normally double Shenzhen's and peaks at 5 times Shenzhen. There are things you can do you know, buy a mask with filters for going outside and get an air purifier for your home.

Hard for single foreigners to buy, that’s right. Easy if you got married to a Chinese. Knowing that it doesn’t make it yours neither, eventhough you can use it as ling as you’re married if some day you’ll have to divorce with your wife, there is only very few chance that government let you have your part of the apartment you bought along with your wife. Unless she wants to be fair and give it to you, but it never happens like that.

@@aaronhammerling9739 The air quality isn't constantly bad, it's only a few days a month where I have worn my mask to go out and it's also only a seasonal thing. During the winter they burn coal in the factories and in 2-3 months it won't even be an issue. So it's just a small inconvenience to deal with in order to reap all of the benefits.

This is a really important issue to get out in the open and I'm glad someone is able to speak frankly about these things. It's been an ongoing issue for me, but what's weighing heavily on my heart right now is the undeniable fact that there are still people in this world that outright refuse to wear gloves out in the elements. I just can't wrap my mind around the choices some people are making these days. To 2019, hope it's not the last.

My Chinese wife (me white) and I will be leaving China soon. We're selling our apartment and moving back to USA. Not that we don't love China, on the contrary. No offense, but how'd you marry a Chinese professor? Pointing out you're white is kind of an odd thing to add mid sentence in the wrong place. Also: 1) personnel? 2) experiance? Sorry to pick on you. I'm just agitated these days because I've been struggling to get an ESL job in China. I have the degree, the tefl, and old experience before my degree. I'd go to Vietnam or something, but I've heard getting a public school or university job is impossible.

I had no sympathy for Westerners who are living China. You knew from the beginning that you were going to live in a country where human rights are non existent. Deal with it. If you are forced out, too bad for you. My dad spent 2 years working in Libya in early 90's. He was in civil aerospace industry and he got to maintain Gaddafi airplane. His biggest fear was that he was working in a country that had no human rights. He was ready to leave any day. He was there for the money (Gaddafi paid them very very well) but he knew it could end any day and he might not come back home. He took the risk. So you all know you are going into country that had no human rights. You are there for the money (mostly) or adventure. Deal with it.

Zhaoxun Yan Not at all. I approached China with the best intentions and the best will, but the country beats you down mercilessly. Every daily activity is a chorus: from taking metro, where everyone tries to stomp in and out without any consideration, general hygiene, endless burocracy for everything, lawless traffic and the list goes on and on...But you see, I’m married to an amazing Chinese woman that compensates all this and at the end, I just visit China for a couple of weeks a year. When I’m there, I just try to remain as still and quiet as possible and pray for the moment to get the hell out of there as soon as possible and go on with our life without having to ask consent to the Communist Party.

I was in China from 09-11 and then again from 13-14. I noticed the change in 2014 myself. I had my visa denied, a Chinese company wanted to hire me as an international sales person at a steel company to give their company a foreign face to make their foreign partners more comfortable. If it’s an international company you want international people. I was denied it for some reason and I had gone to graduate school for this stuff so I was qualified. I’d say things started turning right around the time I left. I loved china but I’m glad I went when I did and I’m glad I left. I still miss it but I’m happy where I am now back in America

Must've been easy getting a job with your major. I was there same time as you, but now my friends that are leaving are saying things changed drastically over the past 5 years. My global studies degree is worthless in US until I pair it with an MBA or something. ESL and cost of living in China allows me to save money faster so I can get another degree online. Unfortunately, I'm struggling to find a school that will take me. Very different from 2009 when I had schools and agents sending me 50 emails a day trying to hire me.

I think it started even earlier man, like 2011-ish. That's when there was a lot of chatter about "too many undesirable foreigners" who were mostly unemployed grads from the recession still hanging around and they started changing and limited visas for foreigners. Miss the old days, it was like the wild west (or east?). It's not like that anymore.

Top notch commentary and analyses, guys. Thanks much. I made 6 trips into southern China myself back in the 2007-2009 time frame on behalf of a company I was working for at the time. I met many fine Chinese citizens who were hard working. I saw all of the things I'm seeing on your videos, and saw many Westerners there like myself. It doesn't surprise me, however, that many are now leaving as the Chinese Communist government's mindset is to be insular and fearful of continued Western influences. That mindset will eventually cause their own collapse and the continued impoverishment of their own people. Sad, but true.

Jeff Smith -- I seriously hope China doesn’t repeat the mistakes of it’s past. Almost every dynasty China fell into decline after the conservative closed mindset began to take over. Tang Dynasty, Ming dynasty, Qing Dynasty.. xenophobia and growing oppression...it’s a never ending cycle. Starts with a lot of pride, then lags behind and when outsiders bully you, China always takes it out on its own people and blame it on others, instead of learning what it’s falling behind in and self improvement by learning from others. I truly hope the next Generation of young Chinese will change Chinese society for the better. Insular mindset will never be the answer. A truly powerful nation isn’t afraid of criticism, Hope China can come to that point.

Charles Cxgo if a tenth of the young generation Chinese think the way you do my country will have hope. It is hard to have a correct world view in a nation where almost everything is censored and restricted. My hope is on the children of the rich and powerful because they get the chance to go out and learn in a more advanced culture. Only they have enough power and resource to make a change.

They are the original, strong, resourceful and history conscious people of the old imperial systems that adapt to the changing world and take pride in their work. These are the true people who built the long standing Great Wall and not the slap dash layabouts that have been destroying the old buildings because they do not know how to fix them.

New taxation legislation is one of the biggest reasons. Beginning January 1, 2019, an individual who resides in China for 183-days or more will be considered a tax resident and be liable to PRC IIT on their global income. Everything you have posted is true regarding healthcare, visa issues and education, I have been living in Guangdong province since 2007 and the downturn of the electronics industry has also been devastating to foreign investors in Dongguan, coupled with the rising salary levels. The new Global tax will be the final nail in the coffin I believe, You shall have to pay tax in your home country as well as China now. Stay safe.

Global tax? It's been a law in USA for years that you pay tax in both countries. Also, as far as I remember, before 2019 you were taxed in China. So, I don't really understand why you are hanging on the tax change unless you're making bank? If I had that kind of money flowing into my pocket, I definitely would move to greener pastures. China's a good place to start, I'd invest some of my money into projects to improve China and the rest into starting a new life elsewhere.

Foreigners leaving China? How about the Chinese leaving China? Many reasons you described regarding why foreigners are leaving China are the same reasons Chinese are leaving China!! Have you been to New York City? There’s a section in NYC called Flushing (where I live). It is now a full fledged Chinatown. Construction is unbelievable. All over the place. Who’s buying the majority of the condos? The Chinese from China. Why are they coming? To invest bc it’s not easy in China. And for education. And a better life.

This is a big part of the Chinese government's plan. They block the entrance of foreigners into Chinese markets whilst encouraging Chinese to go to countries with freeish markets to buy property and businesses. Local people, who have been blocked from saving due to high taxes over years and years, are then blocked from entering markets in their own countries. Voila, China is in control. Make no bones, these Chinese immigrants have no loyalty to their host countries and are only interested in ultimately imposing political and economic control. My country, New Zealand, has been very naive and we will regret it (are already in fact). The Chinese actually come here and say how stupud we are; not only do we let them take over but we also offer welfare benefits to people who have contributed little or nothing to our society.

@@wenshu888 there certainly seems to be that chinese thing with loyalty. they come to the west for a better life, more freedom, more safety, etc, but then they seem to be very easily coerced into spying on the fellow chinese and other citizens in their new home. personally i think the mainland chinese government looks at foreign countries, peoples as just to be exploited. which ever way.

Yep, I was there off and on for about a decade. Speak Chinese fluently, but left it all about 4 months ago. It's just a land of headaches and endless BS. There is no peace living in China, only constant haggling and frustration at every corner. There are so many happier places in the world. I feel the only people who "like" it are either lying to themselves or are truly delusional. Not a lot to like.

I have been traveling to China for 3 years but with the current trade war and reports I am hearing about China I have lost all desire to visit China. This Spring I am going to Taiwan, Thailand and Singapore. I even have a new Chinese visa and now I don't plan on using it. I love the people of China but lost all respect for the Government

Totally agree, when the people who immigrate to China who have invested years of their lives into China are suddenly emigrating from China, you know something is wrong. In general, if people are leaving your country, you're doing something wrong. If people are lining up to come to your country, you know you're doing something right (or at least, you're doing something better than the countries around you).

I watched the Chinese economy carefully for several years. Last year I was careful to convert my money and send it home as soon as I got paid. As the yuan plummeted and my students complained more about unemployment, I figured it was time to get out. The restrictions on VPNs and the constant sabotage of them kind of sealed the deal for me. Now I'm watching the Chinese economy torpedo and the government get more oppressive from the US and I am so, so happy that I left when I did.

Matt, I’ve been involved with bikes all my life as my grandparents were the founders and owners of a motor racing circuit (mainly motorcycles) here in Lincolnshire, England (up until the early 1980’s). As a baby I travelled on my mothers knee in my Dadda’s sidecar and when I was 5, I was gifted my first helmet so I could be his official pillion. He ALWAYS enforced wearing the proper gear. Helmets were so heavy in those days and my dad looked like an astronaut 👨‍🚀 in his! I was so proud and went everywhere with him. He made me wear gloves and protective gear as he would drum into my head what it was like to lose a lot of skin in an accident (he spent a lot of his childhood in the 1940’s and 50’s in hospital after coming off his childhood pedal bike, burning off his skin, riding like a bat out of hell on a local hill). I have in turn passed the “wear all the gear” message to my children who are all bikers and I even wear the kit when out on my road legal 800cc Quad ATV. I see you aren’t just without gloves, but you’re wearing bloody shorts! Are you crazy man? You’re a husband and father and it’s therefore in your interests to keep yourself as protected as possible in Jeans with Kevlar, perhaps armour and an armoured jacket too. Gear is so much lighter in weight, and price than it used to be. Keep your skin covered or be prepared to lose it! You’re foolish to put yourself at risk, especially if you end up in an Asian hospital, your wounds would never stay clean and heal so wise up!

I was born and raised in China and came to Canada. I now hold a Canadian passport and speak perfectly fluent Chinese. But even I am paranoid when I'm visiting my extended family in China. There are just so much information you have to fill out everyone. You almost can't do anything without linking it to your ID or your phone number, which is linked to your ID, anymore.

I have to disagree with what you said about ESL teachers... I do “understand what’s going on” around me... and I’m watching this video for that exact reason. The visa process is absolutely bonkers. It’s practically impossible to integrate myself into this culture, because as that article said “I’ll never be Chinese”. Hong Kong is easy, Philippines is easy, Indonesia is easy, but absolutely everything in China is so damn difficult and working with Chinese people can be really awful sometimes. And they’ll treat Americans like they’re stupid too which makes it even worse. I’m regretting my lengthy contract and wishing I signed somewhere else. I am learning the language, I am exploring the country and trying to integrate... As is every other ESL teacher I know here... Definitely disagree with what you said and feel a little offended by it. I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t interested in Chinese culture, the Chinese way of life and language. I can’t even begin to tell you the difficulties I’ve experienced but of course I don’t have to tell you, you know already... As an ESL teacher I’m absolutely effected by all of this. Still watching as I’m updating this comment. I see what you’re saying, sure ESL teachers or travel bloggers will leave, but you’re really talking about those who are more invested in China. I’ll be here for 2 years and when I first got here I thought, “I could stay for more than 2 years”, but now I don’t want to. “Are Chinese people crybullies”, heck yes they cry to get anything they want. Zac Vaughn, the Chinese don't want you to integrate. They believe that they are superior to you and they will keep at arm's length or further. You will find that as your Chinese gets better and better people with any degree of English will refuse to speak with you in Chinese. If you can find a genuine and loving partner though, that will really help with everything. If you have a genuine partner you will have a most loyal companion

I think that China might be preparing for a big economic disaster. Authoritarian countries tend to be cyclical with periods of oppression followed by periods of relative freedom. The current freedom period in China has been driven by a very favorable export economy with western countries, but this is gradually coming to an end. Foreign businesses that were having their products made in China are now moving to other countries like India, where they can actually own businesses without a native partner owning 51% of the business. Also, a lot of western countries have wised up. They have realized how detrimental over-regulation of domestic businesses has been to their local economies. This is leading to a lot of deregulation, even in European countries. In short, fewer foreign entities are choosing to do business in China. Even worse, the technology of manufacturing is gradually becoming less and less dependant on cheap, skilled human labor -- China's claim to fame. The watch phrase that guides a lot of manufacturing companies these days is: "Automate or die." Typically, countries like China want to start moving foreigners out when trouble is on the horizon. If you will remember, during the Tian'an Men massacre, China prepared by first expelling every foreigner from the country, which was probably a massive undertaking. Will there be another Cultural-Revolution-like event? I doubt it will be quite that severe, but something is in the offing. Remember, authentic and open economic information is not published in China. The only time that authoritarian countries publish negative economic information is when they want to use that information to manipulate people or events. A thousand economic dams could be ready to break in China, and nobody but select government insiders would even have a clue.

Low taxes and the communist government is gonna help just move there you can do most the stuff remotely I was told, little to no taxes I was told, 30cents on hour labour for lvl 1-2 techs I was told, and this is when the gig economy was first getting steam. Did I take my shit and leave my town hell no I had only 4 guys and all 4 them were more valuable to me then short term gain. So I stayed my ass in NY and paid my taxes and paid my guys a reasonable pay. And you know what 2 of them just finished a there engineering degree within the company and I'm up to 7 guys now. I have a clue the difference is I'm not a fucking sellout.

My wife and I were in Hualien a couple weeks ago. While there, I started to notice a strange language on some of the signs, not Chinese, not English. Almost like Malay or Tagalog. Then I saw a TV news show where the anchor was dressed in Taiwanese Aboriginal clothing. At the bottom of the screen were captions in the same language, so I guessed it must be the Taiwanese aboriginal language.

@@telegraphdude6823 Probably Ami tribe language . There are something like 14 tribes in Taiwan. Polynesians ancestors come from Taiwan. Of you visit Hualien at certain times of year you can see their festivals and dances.

I taught English in Japan for 7 years and in Thailand for 3 . I enjoyed both experiences and learned a great deal. I even taught both English and French in Mexico for 3 years and I enjoyed this. I turned down offers to teach in China and I seriously don't regret it.

I haven't invested anything in there, but I worked legally for a year there. I found all those things living there, I faced difficulties with my health and medical care, I couldn't find another legal job and I decided to leave. So I totally relate to what you are saying. That is so true.
