i rewatched that scene a few times and I actually think he might have been lying to Tyrion. Maybe he was on a relapse and doing self-destructive things. Heading back to be with Cersei kinda made him revert completely to his old, arrogant ways, I don't think he was being genuine. Hell, he might have been trying to be funny. just a thought

rosgill6 Maybe your right but I honestly think that the writers just threw away his character in the final season. All of his development disappeared and I understand that characters are flawed but it’s the culmination of 8 years of character development. He deserved better.

oh absolutely. what I suggested was just a thought. It's far more likely that D&D caught "shit writer's disease" (terminally) and didn't wear their masks to the writer's table and coughed it all over. The results were a massacre of logic and decent story

also don't forget about fighting a MOTHERFUCKING BEAR with one hand to save a woman; keeping his word to Caitlyn Stark v.v. the two girls, including giving away a valyrian steel sword to woman he fought a bear to save to search them out. And also riding North to certain doom and or imprisonment/death to represent the Lannister name defending Winterfell against the Dead. It's hilarious we got 8 seasons worth of the track going one way, and there are still idiots out there 'oh well, derp derp, maybe he was trying to lie to Tyrion..' Yea... He was trying to lie to the guy who knows he fathered kids with his sister... Perfect sense.. So he doesn't care that Tyrion knows he fucks his sister, but damn if he'll let Tyrion believe he has some compassion for the common man...

There wasn't time for their love story to develop, it could have been a wonderful love story. They both have endured so much. But they rushed it so badly, the built up was so quick. They should have had a season of just knowing each other and flirting. We could even seen some character development of how being in love changed both of them for good or bad. We didn't get to see it because it was rushed

Exactly, characters in the show have devolved into completely shallow husks of what they used to be... Instead of meaningful character depth that is interestingly explored and showcased through dialogue, we get witty one liners that aren’t that witty Everyone suffers from mutilation of their character because of the severely shallow bland dialogue

It also undermines the whole idea the show was striving for: that the politics, lust and bloodshed of Westeros was futile and dwarfed in importance by the imminent threat of the undead armies that don’t care which house you belong to. Every few episodes, especially towards the final few seasons, we were treated to some variation of the dialogue, “What does it matter who sits on the Iron Throne? The dead are coming!” Ultimately, it mattered a great deal. The last three episodes toil with this matter and the show ends up being punctuated by more of the petty politics it spent so much time decrying. Like, just one more confrontation against the Wights did the trick? And, we don’t learn anything more about the White Walkers, such as the spiral symbols they make the effort in leaving behind, or why they disappeared for so long? Quite a disappointment in my view, especially when you recognize that the Lord of Light spent about 8000 years setting the stage for... that.

Now, I have to disagree here. Battle strategy sucked, yes, but the Night King cast the blizzard to obscure vision, and then attacked Jon & Dany with his dragon, until he was knocked off of it. Then he raised the dead of Winterfell (which appeared to be everyone but main characters) finally approaching Bran (his Goal?) before being assassinated. And lets face it, he is a badass undead Lych, not a master ninja. Arya could have reasonably slipped that shot in. (albeit we all wanted to see Jon take him on) I just don't think the undead army should have been defeated in the first wave. They should have fled to DeepWood Mutt, then hung that F*Kn deserter, then burned more undead in the marshes, backing down to highgarden and holding off more undead at Brawns castle, then finally letting the undead seize Kings Landing, and Arya assassinate Cercei, while the epic fight ended in the night kings death.

Lost Goth I know right? Tyrion in chains determining the next ruler of the seven kingdoms....Sam tarly a grand Master? He fuckin left and never got even a regular maesters chain, AND he never needed a chain anyways! He had done what no other master would even try with jorah, and not only that but he is still technically a brother of the nights watch. They ruined so many plot lines and Foundations and foreshadowing. The list goes on and on. What was the point of Jon Snow coming back to life? What was all that about the prince that was promised and lightbringer? Why did Sam tarly steal the books from the Citadel when he didn't even find anything in them on how to defeat the white walkers? What's the point? The Dothraki get wiped out and yet they respawn next episode. 'Danny forgot about the iron Fleet?' even though they have talked about it several times and this same iron Fleet destroyed her ships and her allies twice. You have varys on the sidelines and not acting like himself and last season same thing with little finger! am infuriated. That's what happens when you try to cram two seasons of material into six episodes when you just don't care and impatient to get it over with so you can move on to Star Wars. I would have had a lot more respect for D&D had they manned up, told HBO that they wanted to move on to other projects and parted ways after season 6. That way their work would have been praised from seasons 1 through 6 and then HBO could have gotten more seasons and more episodes with better writers to conclude the story the way it should have been. I don't understand how these morons got away with only doing six episodes for a final season and 7 episodes the season before. Even George RR Martin said there was enough to do 10 full seasons at minimum

Lol I was saying this since the first rant/critic video I saw. Like what more did he need to see to know that Dany needed to go? Not to mention how he says he wont make excuses and then proceeds to make excuses to Tyrion two second later. And after killing her they talking like maybe they made the wrong choice. Like why are you guys conflicted? Tyrion was already set on her needing to die but now he isnt? Jon literally spent the last two previous episodes rejecting her advances and after seeing what he saw he should've known that Dany wasnt the person she proclaimed herself to be anymore. Like if Jon wasn't 100% sure that he was doing the right thing at any point then he wouldn't have killed Dany. Like Jon cared about Olly. He trained the boy. Made him his squire. Probably spent most of his off screen time with this boy while at the Night's Watch. And when the boy stabbed him to death with his other brothers was he conflicted? NOOO. Just imagine if he needed to talk to Sam about executing Olly and Ser Alister before he did it. It wouldve been dumb.

And during that presentation, Jon says that he can't justify what Dany did, and then he tries to justify it 15 seconds later. Plus there is no moral ambiguity or conflict in killing someone who nukes a city, claims it is liberation and then says that she needs to make the liberation thing into a world tour. I was almost left hoping that Jon would try to stab Dany, but finds out she is wearing a breastplate, and Dany yells "Hahahha! I knew you would betray me!!" and the Unsullied charge into the room and arrest Jon. That would have been more interesting, even though I liked Drogon's reaction to Dany dying.

I did get this exact sense, especially in the last episode, that there were Disney elements in it, especially the "conquer the world" villain speech, Daenerys's witch-like dress, the royal elections which invoked this nauseating idealism (stories... not armies and money...) and the Small Council meeting. In the meeting... the way they talked: "The Master of Coin objects to the Grand Maester's... blah blah" It reminded me of the way Disney characters speak: "Good morning, mrs. X" "Good morning, mr. Y" That happy formal manner of speaking and that joyful harmony between people even when they contradict each other... The tone is so Disney-ish... I don't know how else to describe it. I think this was on purpose on their part, not a matter of lack of talent, but to let Disney know they're 100% on their team.

Octavian Popescu The show just sort of got stripped of not only its character complexity and political nuance, but also its grotesque display of gore and violence. I don’t mean to sound childish there, and I love plenty of stories which lack those elements. It’s just that it’s a symptom of a larger problem of how this show became less daring and substituted GRRM’s roadmap with tropes that it initially avoided like the plague. I know that’s partly Martin’s fault for, you know, not finishing the books. But they should have handed it off to other show-runners if they were no longer up to the task.

Like he makes Jon looks completely and utterly whipped next to Dany to the point that he sounds like he has no mind of his own. Like he still had a personality and autonomy when he was with Ygritte and it felt natural. Like real love and affection. Not just dolls being smashed together by a child making kissing noises.

Well it depends on the books and on the person who enjoys them. There are many people who read only to recite quotes and feel smart from whatever other person wrote. I was majoring in Literature and Linguistics, Sociology and Philosophy until I dropped out from disgust and from a major mental breakdown. Those types of careers tend to be plagued with echos. I grew up at the circus of my parents and of other relatives feeling insanely above the human specie along with a bunch of intellectual snobs they hang out with. All of them are bookworms, are decent writers themselves and are "cultured", but still fail to get to their own conclusions and to doubt, question or play with the ideas of praised and less known thinkers. So actually I'd say many people that "read a lot", do so blindly and don't give themselves the time to think for themselves.

@@abbesatty9498 and there are also many many other films that are terrible bcs of lazy writers. just bcs they are writers doesnt mean they're great. i believe D&D got completely lazy in season 8 because they wanted to move to their next Star Wars project while HBO and GRRM wanted 10/13 seasons. They did fucked up a lot. character development that was built since the beginning of the season especially for Jaime's redemption arc IS important. especially since he first met Brienne. try comparing this season's script to the earlier series, then maybe you'd see the difference of hard work and good direction/effort instead of lazy writing and relying too much on subverting expectations just to shock the audience.

You hit on one of the biggest thorns in my side from this last season - that the winter we often see here in Southern Ontario (forget about the real north!) is way worse than the light covering of pretty white powder they delivered. That’s frolicking like kids, making snow angels weather. They couldn’t even be bothered to show the effects of the people suffering and starving as we know they would’ve been in the true winter with their kingdoms at war. Some people don’t care about these details but it’s precisely the details - in plot, in character and in production - that have always made this show remarkable. It just felt like the writers and producers didn’t care anymore. Kinda like I felt by halfway through this season.

A character who is supposed to have a plan for anything at all that could happen to him and he goes out like a little bitch after doing bullshit in Winterfell trying to pit Stark sisters against each other which was a storyline beneath him, and also a poorly done storyline for the writers all around.

I agree they did screw up Varys story arc. Conleth Hill who plays Varys said that he didn't like how he was sidelined the last two seasons and he felt like since his character is so intelligent then why doesn't he know certain things. I think they did this on purpose to move the plot forward. Varys would not openly commit treason and he wouldn't openly approach Jon the way he did it's just the bad writing cause Varys is no ones idiot.

How convenient... my main complaint is that nothing meant anything in season 8... white walkers didn't mean anything... jon snow being targaryen didn't mean anything... cersei didn't mean anything.. at least daenerys going mad made sense - yet some people complain even about that - although would have been nicer if they had given her a much better reason to finally snap - but I mean that's the definition of insanity right? it's not supposed to make sense

The writers just were like ‘sUbvErT evErYthiNg’ but completely threw out good story to do that. We expected Ned to live bc he’s the good guy, of course he lives. But he didn’t. Plus he (Joffrey) was right about being concerned about Daenerys and her dragons, just like his "father," King Robert. Season 8 invalidated Ned Stark having a moral compass about Robert's efforts trying to kill Dany. Had he succeeded he would have saved over a million lives just in King's Landing alone, and including over 100 children in Essos. Can you imagine the terror, fire and blood that would have beset the world if Khal Drogo had lived, and/or especially if their son, Rhaego, the prophesied Stallion Who Mounts the World, had lived?
@Lrodpotato
@Lrodpotato 5 жыл бұрын
@@thedeejaeebee5babee I mean Ned's not invalidated. His opinion is formed based on what the information he knows. Ned wasn't thinking about if Dany had plans or what she could or could not do in the future. He was thinking about the fact that she was a barely older than a child in his eyes and now pregnant. As well as, she and Viserys had no responsibility over the Mad King's actions or Rhaegar's "supposed" kidnapping of Lyanna. To Ned, what he saw was that Robert had not just changed physically but mentally as well. (But in my personal opinion, I dont think Ned knew Robert at all.) But on a Westerosi politics level and even on a logical/pragmatic level, Robert was in his right to kill anyone who was a threat to his claim on the throne as early as possible before things progressed too far. Because it's obvious Viserys or Dany or someone who had an interest in a Targaryen restoration were hatching some kind of plan otherwise why would they marry her to Khal Drogo? Like it was obvious something needed to be done for the sake of everyone and the morality over who was right and who was wrong is debatable.

Chalk it up to my own way of protecting my own mental stability now as a coping mechanism. I know it's "just a story" but it was a beautiful, epic story until it was ruined.

still cant believe they split storm of swords into two books but a book that had to be split because it was too long was put into one season. Have just started reading a feast for crows and cant wait to see what season 5 should have been like. Its still gonna be hard to beat the third book though because that one was amazing. Since youre a book reader though I have a question regarding Daenerys and her ending: Was her madness and eventually death really the obvious and only possible ending for her? I mean in the first three books I have read it is hinted that madness will play a big part in ther story by having her constantly question herself if what she is doing is right and listening to a stories told by Baristan about madness in her family nad also Rhaegar. However I feel like there are so many possible endings and so manny possible outcomes. I mean the fact that madness will be there does not have to mean much and if she becomes mad it does not have to be Aerys level of mad. In her chapters you keep getting the feeling that she is doing all that just for her familly and because it is expected of her (very similar to stanises arch) and you just feel like thats not what she realy wants. She just wants that house with a red door and a lemon tree and live in peace. Just imagine her not taking the throne because realises she never wanted it or something like that. One way this could pay off though is that this very thing could actually be the cause of her snaping and becoming mad realising she never wanted the throne and lost people that are important to her because of something she actually did not want to get. Thinking about it like that makes Martins choice for her ending hardly the only possible option and in no way the only possible ending for her. Her character still in both the books and the show feels so stable its sounds almost impossible for her to become what she became in the finale. Although noone can argue that this wasnt the only possible ending after episode 5.

We gave too much credit to D&D and the other showrunners for GoT's amazing four/five seasons, but now I think they weren't good writers after all and the show was only good because they had the books to rely on, it's not a coincidence the show started to suck after they ran out of books to adapt. I honestly think GRRM's planned endgame for the books are Dany going mad and Bran ending up being king, but the thing is the saga isn't anything close to being finished (some people say the author won't be able to finish it ever) so there's still time to explore and flesh out Danny's change and there will be time to justify Bran becoming king. It's like GRRM told the showrunners "well, this is how the book's will end" but they didn't know how to pull it off on screen (maybe they weren't talented enough or maybe they weren't that interested in GoT anymore and said fuck it, whatever, we just want this shit to end). Idk, maybe next time don't adapt a book saga that isn't finished yet.

I agree that the storytelling started to go off the rails in seasons 6 and 7, but I thoroughly enjoyed them. I actually liked each season better than the last all the way through season 7. Season 8 was a complete train wreck. It wasn't that I had a specific ending in mind, it it wasn't that certain people died or lived, the problem was the whiplash character changes. They clearly favored the "look" of scenes to their actual content. They were too worried about being "epic" to care about logic or consistency. As you say, the show has magic and dragons, but you can only stretch disbelief so far before it breaks. I also agree that the technical quality fell -- all those water bottles and coffee cups and wrist watches are proof. What a shame.

@ShadowReaperX07
@ShadowReaperX07 5 жыл бұрын
You could probably also argue Season 3's Red Wedding worked for very similar reasons: Robb and Ned made a series of choices which, in the beginning, seemed inconsequential, for the decision making was noble, but ultimately they had consequences which forced the character into making a second decision, and then a third, where they would eventually alienate more and more people and find the alliances they thought they held were not as strong as they thought - which ultimately stems back to one of their first decisions they made which caused the first crack in their metaphorical armor. Ned discovers the truth (Good action) Ned attempts to confront the Queen whose alliances outrank his and has support of great wealth and influence of being queen. (Bad Action) He attempts to strike a deal with the knowingly shifty littlefinger (Bad Action). He has a confrontation with the Queen's Brother (Bad Action) He brings the whole thing to a conclusion without the necessary security in place (Bad Action). His plan fails and he's killed for it. Ned's story is entirely honorable, and innately good, because the viewer knows that Ned's discovery is the truth. But in the world itself (whose rules the characters are bound by) no one else knows for certain that this is the case beyond those that want to believe "those rumors" and those that know because of their guilt. As such having the confrontations with the guilty party, under the assumption they would have 'honor' (despite having a "King Slayer") is a complete mis-step and it gets Ned killed. His story is good, which makes you root for him. But his actual decisions are bad, which makes him ripe for death in the story. Robb leads his army in a conflict of retribution against the south (Good action) Robb makes a shaky alliance with Karstarks, this ultimately breaks down resulting in execution (Bad Action) Robb makes a shaky alliance with Freys, this ultimately breaks down resulting in betrayal of promise (Bad Action). Karstarks and Freys align with the enemy to pay Robb back for his betrayals in the interest of their own houses - which Robb had compeltely snubbed. (Bad Action). Robb is killed. _______ Similarly this sort of thing also happens for the likes of Oberyn who also comes to mind even though this is much later, and arguably the last time that this happens. His intentions are good and noble, but he fucks it up and is killed for it. After this, the deaths of characters aren't even necessarily for making bad decisions, but seemingly just out of the fact they were "good" (and secondary) E.g. Dolorous Edd, Misandei to name just two in season 8 which ultimately served as a facilitator for 'drama'. Dany was sort of an unfulfilling death for the opposite reasons, because unlike say Ramsay Bolton, who has around 3 seasons worth of him being a malicious sociopath, Dany has ~5 seasons of the occasional suggestion that malicious sociopath resulting in the murder of civilians during a surrender but ultimately concludes that this should not be the case - So much so she puts her personal conflict on hold (Taking the Iron Throne) in order to assist Jon in the fight against Death itself (which would engulf all of the innocent civillians of the world) only to have seemingly forgotten about this great sacrifice for the good of all man-kind, not 2 and a bit hours later and then turn on the flick of a switch into the Queen of the Ashes where she dooms a good portion of man-kind. _______ When Game of Thrones began to deviate from Source material, it left some of complexity which was necessary for most of the cast in order to cause them to interlock - as their characters got boiled down to the vague sense of what they once were: Littlefinger - Just plotting. Varys - Just listening. Tyrion - Just 'A wise man once said'. Jon - Just a Noble queens man. Sansa - Just an abuse-surviving queen (who now thinks ill of most - viewing them as a threat to power) Dany - A power-hungry queen. Cersei - A delusional power-hungry queen. Jamie - In utterly blind love with a delusional power-hungry (sister) queen. Davos - Grammar corrector. Bronn - (successful) dishonorable Blackmailer. Brienne - In love with the man in love with the delusional power-hungry (sister) queen. Podrick - Actually not to bad as he actually became a proper fully fledged knight. Arya - Just a stone-cold killer. Bran - Just creepy. The Hound - Another not too bad arc in its whole resolution of his character who has "got have a code". Greyworm - Just a 'perfect soldier'. Misandei - Just a trigger for the 'perfect soldier' to become 'imperfect'. You simply can't boil characters down to the nearest whole trait or you end up removing their potency and their agency in being able to exist in multiple scenarios without seeming out of place. But by the end, you get quite a few of these out of place events, be they deaths, or "should be" deaths.
