Great video! The Massed Bands sounded amazing! Great to "Trafalgar"! My favorite!! The marches played were, 1) 0:34-The Mountbatten March 2) 4:13-HM Jollies 3) 8:38-Trafalgar 4) 12:36-Glorious Victory

Drum Solos for those interested, (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). 1) 2:53-Illawalla 2) 6:51-Kitchener's Army 3) 11:13-Drummer's Lilt

Being in a position of neutrality (happily extending equal love to the Massed Bands of the Marines and the Guards), I am in a safe position to compare the 2022 Beating Retreats, or at least their March-ons and March-offs. And? This was one thrilled and moved me the more of the two. (where "thrilled and moved" can be considered to boil down about 6 different quality factors). Maybe this one was less flashy ... but that is what I need right now. They just do the job ... and are what they are supposed to be! Bring on 2023 (God willing) for the "re-match"... (In any case, given the terrible cuts to the British bands in recent years, we take what we get and thank God for it) And, since we are bringing God into it (now for the third time), MILITARY bands should not really be a source of uplifting, heartwarming joy, should they? The Russian Zorya in Red Square had about as much joy in it as a squashed hedgehog on a road ... even before "all that" started. But our brave lads and lasses have it, playing ... have always had it. If anybody wants to account for that difference, I would be thrilled to hear where you think it comes from... Long may they continue to have it. In these horrible times, we offer thanks and blessings to ONE AND ALL...

Last time I saw this event in person was 1984 (marching to HG in my case) I remember they played "Chimes of Liberty" , a march we do not hear nowadays . Led by Snr D.M Dawson.

Must've been an amazing thing to witness! "Chimes of Liberty" is a spiffing march! One of my favorites. As you stated it's rarely heard, sadly.
@midnightteapot56332 жыл бұрын
@@delvinrodriguez3341 There is a very fine march called " Sergeant of Marines" by Sumner that is never played and can not be found (not by me anyway) I have it on an old LP and that is the only reference I have . Its a good solid march ,strange how its not used. Shrewsbury Fair is another old favorite on the RM that is still around but played much less now .
@supernutkin51222 жыл бұрын
Ah, the Corps Drum Major Dave Dawson from the 1980's. Yes, he was an immaculate and competent Drum Major who was held in high regard throughout the Corps. The person holding that appointment nowadays is Corps Drum Major Chris Mace. You can see him leading the Massed Bands in the above video and he reminds me of Dave Dawson. Very similar in the way he marches and is also always immaculate and has a superb "Military Bearing"

I have to say the 5 RM Drum Majors are exceptionally smart and march in an elegant Military manner. The Guards Bands and their Drum Majors could take lessons from the Royal Marines to see exactly how it's done .....
@brownbear24192 жыл бұрын
First off they are not Drum Majors. They are Band Majors.
@supernutkin51222 жыл бұрын
@@brownbear2419 I suggest if you know nothing about the subject, butt out ! They are DRUM MAJORS ..... and the senior musicians at the rear of the band are Band MASTERS , plus I think there is a Bugle MAJOR also marching at the rear of the Massed Bands. So get your facts right before you start commenting.
@MilitaryBandsSouthWestUK2 жыл бұрын
@@brownbear2419 the people up front are drum majors as they come from the corps of DRUMS in each band, the band masters are normally at the rear of the band with a red sash on I believe? Band majors are musicians who wear the red sash (again if I’m wrong please correct me)

😂@brown bear, that’s you well and truly told!

@@MilitaryBandsSouthWestUK Thanks for this Rage__Playz ..... However, in the Royal Marines Bands there is no such title as Band Majors ...... Am I unusual that I like to hear the band in the far distance getting louder and loader as they approach until they're are almost deafening as they draw level then slowly fade unto the distance. I try to replicate this with the volume control but it isn't the same as being there. This is the best military band none BTW.
@sidpheasant7585 Жыл бұрын
By my standards, nothing unusual at all. I've loved that sensation since I was 4. And it works with grand and lively tunes, but also with sad ones - as at Her Late Majesty's funeral. See and feel what happens as the bands approached, playing - again and again - those same few tunes of gravitas and depth and love. The Massed Bands are a mobile, history-delivering, mood-changing, spirit-raising unit, and there's NOTHING quite like that. But... watch the massed bands of Russia in Red Square, and you will see ... something very impressive, musically-pretty-gifted and so on... but they lack what the lads and lasses we see above offer us. Explain that as you will, but I think to be honest we know the ultimate source of the differences, and of what we feel! Let's put it this way - bombast is neither the aim nor the consequence of what we see above, or of what we saw as the bands took the Queen's body on its last journey.
