The Rockwell B-1 Lancer is the US Air Force’s ultimate comeback king.
Having survived a decade-spanning rollercoaster ride of strategic and technological shifts by the skin of its teeth, it eventually emerged as one of the most effective and best-loved bombers in the American arsenal.
Forged from the imaginations of some of the USA’s brightest scientific minds as the threat of annihilation at the hands of the Soviet Union loomed large, this fearsome angel of destruction geared up for a Third World War that never came.
Yet, unexpectedly, it would rise like a phoenix from the ashes in its new Lancer incarnation, transformed into a different type of bomber that could face the challenges of modern warfare in an ever-changing world.
Affectionately known as the “Bone,” this flying behemoth cut its teeth in the late 1990s, letting its enormous 75,000 pound internal payload rain down on targets in Iraq and Kosovo before going on to prove itself as a pivotal asset in almost every American aerial campaign of the 21st century to date.

Wow! At 13:27 "...while they continued using the B-52 instead", and the video shows an incredibly rare version of the B-52 that looks amazingly like the B-58 Hustler. Who knew?

learned to ride bikes, mini bikes, motor cycles, cars, trucks, stick shift in Rockwell Downey's parking lots, lived on same streets, both times, Lakewood Blvd or Clark Ave pre 105, schools on two sides CC Carpenter, So Middle school, then Downey hi. Miss these guys! RIP Greatest Generation, teachers, neighbors, bosses, co workers, friends, and family. My family lost our home to the 5 Fwy at Pioneer, Zuse st Pattison Farms in the 50's. Was a paper boy and fan of all tech, read everything, had multi generational family on the inside of this world. We could see the plants in Burbank from Gramma's back yard, she was on the first Concord in the US, and 747 to China after Nixon opened it up, she darn near died (food poisoning?) in China.

"--carries four crewmen: a pilot, a copilot, and an officer." LMAO! I guess the B-1's pilot and copilot are enlisted men, and the "officer" counts as two people.

The Bone with wings swept back is imho the most beautiful bomber ever designed since the beginning of flight. "If it looks good it'll fly good." certainly applies here. Quite the hot rod. I saw one called "The Last Laugh" at an air show years ago. Great cockpit art and the plane is very impressive close up.

I was there for Allied Force at Brindisi Air Base. One of the B-1s landed after one of their decoys ate a missile for a battle damage assessment. Much to the surprise of the Italian government. The BDA was done and the aircraft left to return to home base. And the Italian government then evicted us from the base we'd been using since, I believe, 1990. We packed up our stuff and left on a C-5B. First and only time I flew on that aircraft as a passenger. The Italians were freaked out that a strategic bomber landed at their base (we were all Special Ops units there). Sad. But I really didn't care because I was sick and tired of Brindisi at that point and was glad to leave forever. It would appear the Italians at that point were limited allies, even though they were part of NATO and that was a NATO operation.

The Soviets knew the jig was up when a kid flew a small "Cessna like" airplane under their air defenses and landed it on Red Square. With the US's deployment of the nuke tipped curse missile swarms, they knew there weren't any effective defenses.

@@davedixon2068 You just need something that isn't completely detached from historical reality. "As war broke out in March of that year...". Nine passive and uninformative words. "In March 2003, the US led the invasion of Iraq..." Ten words that tell you what happened.

It was overpriced junk, made obsolete by SAM defenses and the F-117. Carter knew these things so he killed it. Reagan resurrected it for the jobs and votes. BTW, Carter served. He was the real deal. Reagan was an actor, start to finish.

You realize Carter "killed" it becuase he had green lighted the AGM-86 nuclear cruise missile and the B-2 bomber which was a quantum jump in lethality. Reagan not knowing of the existence of the B-2 and not understanding the jump in capability the AGM represented used the canclation to attack Carter as a pacifists in adds
