Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. We’re back for one last special episode before we well and truly take a break, and it will be dedicated to The Master Levels for Doom II, a 1995 expansion pack of Doom II levels made by several prominent community mappers, including new id Software hire Tim Willits, Thy Flesh Consumed guest star John Anderson, a.k.a. Dr. Sleep, future Ion Storm designer Sverre Andre Kvernmo, a.k.a. Cranium, and TeamTNT members Jim Flynn and Tom Mustaine. Unlike traditional megawads, The Master Levels’ 21 maps are not grouped together, intended to be played one at a time from pistol starts. This makes the final product more reminiscent of a designer showcase than a new Doom game. As commercial Doom releases go it’s an odd bird, considerably less controversial than Final Doom, but also much less coherent...and competent. Let’s get the elephant out of the room: I got my copy of the Master Levels for free when I first bought Doom II on Steam, and it didn’t take long for me to find out why. Truth be told, I was going to put this episode off as long as I could, but fate had other plans. Last month, Peter Lawrence released the Master Levels 25th Anniversary MIDI Pack, a set of tracks so full of levity, verve, and experimentation that they make the maps they were written for actually playable; no matter your musical preferences, it’s an improvement over "Running From Evil" playing in every other map. If you were looking forward to this episode, thank Peter by downloading his MIDI pack and sharing it with everybody you know.
FYI: I'm not back. This is the last one before Season 2 starts in March. Date TBD. Enjoy, boys and girls!
*Special thanks to King Kool for the new dunce cap designs!

A surprise to see this show up in my feed, but a welcome one indeed. I found it rather interesting that your thoughts on Cranium's maps are nearly identical to mine, though I personally find Bloodsea Keep a little more enjoyable than most. Apparently all of his maps were supposed to be part of a bigger WAD called Cabal and there were 7 or so levels that were also part of that series that weren't submitted to the Master Levels for one reason or another. Which is a shame because I think one of them (Eye of the Storm) is REALLY GOOD. If you get the opportunity you should give it a play. And yeah Klie's maps are pretty bad. But his Master Levels outtakes are even worse. Fantastic content as always, and I eagerly look forward to what's in store for Season 2. :)

To be fair, you need to have a very high IQ to understand Titan Manor. The progression clues are extremely subtle, and without solid deduction skills most of the hints will go over a typical player's head. There's also the Manor's functionalistic style, which is deftly woven into the map's architecture- it's visuals draw heavily from bauhaus, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depth of this map, to realise that it's not just brilliant- it says something deep about GAMING. As a consequence people who dislike Titan Manor truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the inventiveness in lowering a pillar through a passage inside the fireplace to get the blue skull key, which itself is a cryptic reference to Goethe's German tragic play Faust. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Jim Flynn's genius wit unfolds itself on their computer screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, I DO have a Master Levels tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

I am glad that you did Master Levels run. It is my childhood as my first DooM game was Final Doom for PSX. Oh, man, I was 7 or 8 years old boy and this game scared the shit out of me. Plus it was pretty hardcore for a little boy with PSX controls and stuff. Making through Attack, Virgil and Canyon is all I could get.

So out of curiosity, I looked up more info on Christen Klie. Before Master Levels, he along with Bob Carter created an earlier commercial doom wad called "The Lost Episodes of Doom." Three episodes for Doom 1, all designed by Carter and Klie. Klie released his maps on Doomworld for free in 2008, in a wad file called chris_k. Compared to what he made for the Master Levels, they were MUCH worse. After Master Levels, he landed a job as lead level designer for LucasArts, where he designed the levels for Outlaws and the Rogue Squadron series. For someone who sucks at making maps, the guy's got one hell of a repertoire.

For example: 00:00 Intro & Rules 03:07 Attack 03:35 Canyon ... 20:58 TEETH 22:12 Bad Dream 22:38 Conclusion It makes it easier for people who want to browse for reviews of specific levels. First time I played that map at age 8, I never even figured out how to get into the damn building. I always skipped it, thanks to the PS1 level passwords being written down by the previous owner. This is also how I discovered Plutonia and TNT, without knowing they weren't original Doom 2 levels. Safe to say I sucked balls back then, but enjoyed the game enough to still play to this day.

Once again, I've always said that the "Master" Levels are _much_ worse than TNT. TNT wasn't even a "bad" WAD to begin with; It just got the unfortunate fate of being paired with Plutonia.

Yeah I had the PSX version and it was a real mixed bag, technical issues and lack of levels aside it had superior sound and what levels it did have were retouched to improve their quality, that invisible ledge in Vesperas is visible in that edition and Subspace just looks a hell of a lot better with the starry night sky box it also had some cool lighting FX's that are dated now but looked really cool back then. That was back in the day when different systems provided a different experience now everything plays the same which is better.

The Master Levels were some of the first Doom content I played when I finally got to explore wad content back in 2010, as they came free with the Steam purchase of Doom 2, and well that wasn't a good intro to what wads are capable of. I did at least really enjoy Black Tower and agree it's the best, and I found TEETH pretty cool too, but yeah the rest was forgettable or miserable. The maps do get improved though when they're "PSXfied", as at least they do become a lot more visually impressive and Hodges made some pretty creepy music tracks for them (PSX Geryon in particular is one of his best), while some of their worst gameplay aspects are addressed (especially the ones recreated by fans in the PSX Doom Lost Levels project).

Man, Peter's soundtrack is making everyone revisit this. And by "everyone", I mean you and Decino. It's amazing what some new music can do to a set of levels. I've never played the Master Levels. I remember seeing the game box in stores all the time back then, and imagining these giant, extremely difficult maps. Flash forward 25 years later, I see Decino's playthrough and realize why everyone says they're not very good. Some maps look kinda fun at least. Also, the new intro is nice!

While it might be (and certainly is by today’s standards) comical to include a description like 3:42 with your maps, keep in mind The Master Levels was also packaged with “Maximum Doom.” For anyone unfamiliar with it, here’s the doomwiki for it doom.fandom.com/wiki/Maximum_Doom Yeah. I’ve seen some of these levels. One of them is just a series of tubes that you can’t enter until you lure a Cacodemon out of the tube and into the small area you are in, and then you have to shoot an unmarked wall in a dark hallway to progress and do the same tube dance a dozen or so more times. Another one is just E1M1 but with a bunch of high level enemies crowding the area, and a cyberdemon ready to explode your sorry ass Grosse style at the end of the level. Except you don’t have the ammo to fight him and it’s in E1M1 so you don’t have much room to maneuver. So in terms of community mapping standards of the time, and especially considering those awful maps were packed in with The Master Levels, it’s no wonder why Willits felt the need to specify that you could complete it without cheats, or that it has great texture alignment and well placed monsters. From what I can tell, coming across a map like that in the wild would have been like discovering a megawad as beautiful as Ancient Aliens or Eviternity awash thousands of other maps that all look like e2m9. Also Maximum Doom when MtPain?

Even back when this wad set first came out it was nothing more than an adbuy. The Master Levels for Doom II were made pretty much just to compete with D!Zone (a series of 3rd party addon packs for Doom and Doom II that conained 100's to 1,000's of fan made wads lifted straight from various file sharing sites). And in the original release and in the id anthology came with it a directory called "Maximum Doom", which contained 1830 contemporary fan made pwads for Doom, Doom II and even Heretic Of course you won't fine Maximum Doom in any modern releases of the Master Levels, but there it a catalog of it's contents in "The Maximum Doom reference" over at the idgamesarchive

Well this video was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed the new edits not seen in Season 1 of Dean of Doom. I wonder if Quent (my shorthand for the Delinquent of Doom) will be getting some sort of detention for joking about playing the Master Levels. As for the WAD itself, it's not what I expected. I had heard that TNT and Plutonia were very difficult and my brain made the assumption that the Master Levels were a step up from that. I guess in actuality they're extremely hit or miss with more of the latter than the former. I'm not sure if I'll take this WAD for a spin or not at this point, but if I do I'll likely drag a friend along for the ride. Peter's music was great throughout and it definitely breaths new life into the maps (or at least as much as it can considering some of them). After seeing all the MegaWADs reviewed on your show, I'm very tempted to get some sort of Doom Map builder and try my hand and making map. What holds that temptation back is being so busy with a myriad of other projects. Keep up the great work and I look forward to your next video. //Draco

Your comment about the midi packs: I agree fully. It also holds true if you got a new midi soundfont or device. When I first got an SC88pro a couple years ago; it made playing through the original doom a noticeably different experience. Also thank you for covering this WAD. It saves me some time for better older wads... like STRAIN!

This has always been something of my TNT: Evilution: it was the only "new" WAD on the original Xbox port of the classic Doom games, which included Doom and Doom II as well, and accordingly I remember playing A LOT of Master Levels with my siblings as a twelve-year-old. Some of my fondest memories are ones like exploring the massive Titan maps together for hours, lol. Having said that, I love your review and can definitely see how they would play for someone who did not grow up playing them. As always, keep up the admirable work and thanks for another splendid episode, Dean!

let it be known that the second least common quality rating WAS an F (with 16), but because of this episode the 2nd least common is now A+ thank you master levels, very cool (also, for anyone wondering, the least common quality grade (not including (REDACTED) or EZ) right now is a D+, with only 12 given out)

Thanks for doing this. You said some words I will look up later. I never even knew about this level pack until last year. Overall I enjoyed it, but that key you have to jump over the stairs to get was a bad idea, as was the mandatory ledge that you can’t see (over the poison pit), and mephisto’s mausoleum. Besides the aforementioned travesty, Cranium’s maps are the best and most memorable for me. I enjoyed this wad greatly, except for everything I said two sentences ago. Thanks for the heart you promised.

I feel overall TML aren't all hot garbage - some of them are half - decent maps that could fit in doom II. It's just the awful ones give the WAD a bad name -, or I should say, a _Bad Dream_ .

I can't blame the Master Levels designers for making shitty maps - it came out, like, a year after Doom II. Plus, we're looking back at it from atop nearly 30 years' worth of advancements in mapping technique.

Dr Sleep, Tom Mustaine and Jim Flynn were legends back in the day, and if you liked Titan Manor, wait until you play Eternal Doom MAP31, or even The Enigma Episode, by the same author... Yes, that style of level *did* catch on, believe it or not :P

reverie itself was heavily influenced by two authors from the master levels, including the one whose maps have been thrashed here, not coincidentally. They all were influential mappers.

Aaah yes. The problem of the yellow key room in Subspace. Most likely everyone got "stuck" there including myself when I first tried The Master Levels on PS4. You're not stuck in this room but the way out is so easy to pass by. If you run towards the window at 10:03 from the yellow key part, you'll be out of this "room". It's dumb and doesn't change the fact that it still sucks. Glad to see Black Tower as one of your favorite. If I had to say 1 thing about The Master Levels would be : "Some levels have good ideas (Mephisto's Maosoleum, T.E.E.T.H. and even Titan Manor) but they are so badly designed it makes the ideas look horrible." I wonder if you'll make a Dean Of Doom for Perdition's Gate? It was made by Tom Mustaine and his Dad for Final Doom (more info on his website).

Everyone needs to appreciate Peter Lawrence for he got both decino and MtPain27 to do the Master Levels. Also, your thoughts on Titan Manor and Mephisto's Mausoleum were spot on. Mephisto's actually got me to stop my playthrough for the Master Levels. I'll finish it eventually, but god damn is that indoor revenant fight stupid.

"Attack is one of the best maps in the master levels. Grade: C" I swear I fucking lost it there. 10/10 Alright, jokes aside, I agreed with the vast majority of your rankings. The Master Levels has a myriad of problems (repetitive music, extremely different styles going from one map to the other, unfair difficulty), but the biggest problem here is that most of the maps are extremely well-designed, it's just that they don't play well. AT ALL. Sverre's maps are borderline unplayable (save for Bloodsea Keep, and just barely), Jim Flynn's maps super ambitious, smart and marvelous, but they were obnoxiously tedious to get through. Tom Mustaine's "Paradox" is a masterpiece, Christen David Klie's maps all look alike and they are equally unimpressive. Dr. Sleep's maps are all equally as great but they are ridiculously hard... This campaign is the textbook definition of "a great idea that was poorly executed... 20 times" (I left Paradox out for obvious reasons).

Makes me glad that these aren't added to Bethesda's DOOM Add-on's list. I don't know what console I them on but I only played the first 2 levels and a bit of the third levels. Speaking of Bethasda, are the Add-ons going to be talked about this year? I'm expecting BTSX2 cause it's a sequel to a previous episode and No Rest For The Living cause it's the only official doom game you haven't covered to my knowledge.
