Very useful approach. I see the value in using both approaches to learning songs. I like the first approach (the spreadsheet) for building up vocab and also learning more songs that have the same basic structure. For example, I like to work on the same improv techniques like implementing Coltrane patterns, Octave displacement and Pivot arpeggios. The spreadsheet approach allows me to work on these improve skills without making bigger chord changes. I like the Blueprint (flowchart) approach for minimizing the prerequisite songs needed to learn a new song. Awesome job Chase !!

Thanks for the comment! I agree with you. The blueprint approach gives a lot more context and connections, but in many cases a simpler spreadsheet approach is all that’s needed 🤘

Musicians! This teacher and his methods are very effective yet it will require focus and dedication and hard work! However, if you take the time to listen carefully to what this musician sounds like you will have a very clear idea of the Goal! My Metronome is on your smart speaker. Set and alarm on your smart speaker and schedule practice time or it won’t happen!

Good information, I sometimes have the tendency of going over my head choosing a song like Stella By Starlight because I like the sound and chord movement instead of Autumn Leaves, that is not as much of a challenge. 😅

I’m definitely guilty of this too, and then I always regret not practicing in a smarter way 🤷🏻‍♂️

Sounds extremely interesting and helpful. Not sure how you’re going to connect any Wayne Shorter tunes to this list, though 🤔
@ChaseMaddox
@ChaseMaddox Жыл бұрын
Thanks David! My initial thought is that most of his tunes will connect as offshoots of a standard in the same key, but they definitely don't flow as easily since the harmony is much more complex.

Can you post a link to the full spreadsheet from the first video? It you could include the scales and chords needed for each one, that would be ideal.

I watched the last video, and this one too of course. The approach does seem like a good one. Sorry if I missed it in the last video but are there links to a good-to-start-with version of each standard? There are often so many wide ranging versions of a standard it’s sometimes hard to find one that captures the essential simple essence of the standard (ie it’s not helpful to listen to the 160 bpm Coltrane version first 😀). Personally I find vocal versions best to start with, assuming it’s not an instrumental of course.

Thanks Dale! That’s actually exactly what I’m working on next for this. I’m putting together Spotify playlists with what I think are the best versions of the songs for each Level. The playlists will be focused on classic versions and also any versions that well known jazz guitarists play.

This is why there are etudes written as preparation to classical pieces.

Could you explain what you mean further? I don’t think I get your point.
@feratgoogle
@feratgoogle Жыл бұрын
@@ChaseMaddox for a lot of well known classical pieces there are books with somewhat simpler studies (etudes) derived from the original piece as an exercise. Or etudes that highlight one technical skill that is needed. For jazz I've not seen such an approach so you are on to something.
@ChaseMaddox
@ChaseMaddox Жыл бұрын
I understand what an etude is but I don’t understand how that relates. Are you suggesting students should learn an etude for each of the 100+ jazz standards?
@feratgoogle
@feratgoogle Жыл бұрын
@@ChaseMaddox I think that you can order the pieces so that they become a kind of etude for the next in your list.
@ChaseMaddox
@ChaseMaddox Жыл бұрын
Yes! That’s my point in ordering them in this specific way. Each tune learned should prepare you for the next step in learning.

Tho the concept is good, the graph is not. Too cluttered and hard to read, and too many arrows are overlapping.
@ChaseMaddox
@ChaseMaddox Жыл бұрын
It’s the first iteration. Many arrows will overlap because certain fundamental songs branch out to many songs. There will be less overlap as the standards continue.
@erikluo5006
@erikluo5006 Жыл бұрын
I would align each category vertically, and then make sure that if there are more than two arrows attached to one tune, all the extra ones are readable. Currently, the graph is really confusing, why not just order the tunes from simple to complex, and have branching that connects to tunes in the other categories?

@@ChaseMaddox Maybe it's better to make a connection graph instead of a flow chart then, you can use Obsidian to make it.
