About the guy who "played 25 moves of theory and then got into time trouble" (19:40), I guess that's the downside of playing well-known lines against more experienced/higher rated opponents. If your opponent knows just one or two more moves than you, you have to find the correct response on your own, which could be quite tricky. And if you don't, you're (likely) worse. Then again, if you get out of theory early and "just play chess" (as Naka would say), the higher rated player probably wins as well. The truth hurts.

I just finished watching the first three games. This is very instructive (much more than when he plays random 1800 rated players). I'm about 1950 blitz on lichess, and GM Finegold's style of play and commentary is very comprehensible to me. I almost feel like I can learn to play like him. But I have to learn openings first. I think I'll study his games and openings.
@L2ggs

@@victorpetrescu6586 My dad was a national junior champion. He had a terrible childhood, his family all devoted to petty crime pretty much, and extremely poor. He would spend most of his days in the library to get away from it all. The library had a chess-board and one day a really old man taught him the rules by playing against him. After a few days the old man was unable to win. Within 2 years he was the best kid in my country. He didn't read too many books about opening theory, mostly books by Alekhine so completely self-taught. He also has an extremely mathematical mind; it's worth noting that when he was drafted to the army in 1982, he had to do an IQ test and they almost made him re-take it because they couldn't believe his score. Then they relented I guess, because shortly after they told him that he'd make one hell of a general. My interest in chess is extremely casual, but my older brother has a 2400+ rating on lichess, he says our dad can still kick his ass (especially during the end-game) even though he stopped playing regularly many years ago. Makes me wonder how far he'd go if he never lost his passion for the game...

Hey Ben, loving the active commentary, it's what makes Twitch streaming engaging and great, Game streaming was born out of high level players explaining their thought process live for the masses. It didn't go that way in the end for the video games that made the medium what it is but watching you commentate chess like that is very refreshing and fits the chess niche well. Much love and always retreat!
