Great video!! I've had this thought. At 4:55, rather than (Alice/Neo) 'tumbling down the rabbit hole', the scene transition is a reference to '(Alice/Neo) going through the looking-glass'. Except the Wachowski's reversed it, so that in the scene, 'the looking-glass is going through Neo', indicating that he is entering from the dream and into the real. Which is genius. They really thought things thoroughly making this movie.

I remember watching The Matrix when I was really young and getting freaked the FUCK OUT. I more or less understood everything at face-value, but I didn't understand the backstory that was being set up. They kept talking about the REAL WORLD and I wasn't fully getting it. Smash cut to the scene where Trinity's going down in the helicopter, Neo's holding the rope, she's jumping out. The helicopter crashes into the side of the building, the glass does this weird bend thing. And then the shot that haunted me. Trinity's swinging along, the helicopter explosion in the background, and she collides with the glass of the building in front of her. But it's shot in a sort of way that makes it look like she's crashing right into the screen of my TV. OH GOD, SHE BROKE MY TV SCREEN. She's coming into the real world! I was a dumb kid, but that one shot, mixed with my bare understanding of the movie and how movies in general worked... It scarred me.

Reminds me of how Archer transitions with characters asking a question or making a statement at the end of one scene and another character answering a similar statement or question in the next scene. Always cool.

There is also a wonderful contrast in the alcohol scene and the dining scene. Cypher gives advice to Neo and says 'You see an Agent? You do what we do. Run. Run your ass off'. only to have him sitting with an Agent in the next scene. A great juxtaposition that further emphasizes the idea that Cypher isn't one of them anymore.

pls do your other matrix video. Much like you The Matrix inspired me to do film making :D

Sense8 really shows off the Wachowski's ability to seamlessly transition between shots, especially once you find out that they shot the series one country at a time. Every one of those perfectly matched shots was filmed months apart, on a different location with a clear plan in place for every single transition. I can't even imagine the discipline it would take to keep that sort of focus going all through the series.

I think it's really awesome that youtubers are linking to each other in a community of respect. Thank you, man.

LOVE THIS!!! I've maintained for years and years that The Matrix is, legitimately, just shy of a masterpiece. It's not just cool vfx gimmicks and slow motion - it's actually a ridiculously well written, well made film in its own right. Yes there are movies with better dialogue and more original narrative arcs (since The Matrix is very transparently a hero's journey), but the script is tight and efficient and gets the job done very nicely. And then the actual filmmaking craft is just off the charts. The cinematography is truly inspired at every turn, and the editing and pacing are near perfect. Man, I love this movie.

Definitely up more for in depth exploration of the matrix and the film-techniques used to make it good.

more Matrix video essays won't hurt. I wish I saw more movies that used transitions just like how Matrix made full use of it. It feels like movies got more lazy on the fun aspects of film and is now all pure action or comedy.

Enjoyed both of these Matrix videos! One of the more interesting transitions (it might not fit the exact definition, but bear with me here) is when the camera goes through the old-timey TV screens into the interrogation room. Throughout the entire movie, you don't really know why and probably don't think of it at all until the near end of the sequel when you meet the Architect. It's a nice little tease of what's to come, even if you don't care for the sequels.

Great stuff. I was watching a little of Reloaded yesterday - I like it more than most people. It does some clever camera stuff and scene changes as well, probably not as good as the original film but still some really interesting filmography.

There are so many awesome transitions in The Matrix movies but my favorites remain the simple alarm clock audio & the revolving around phone to reveal the group transition. 👌

An essay about The Matrix's transitions without talking about the office arrest to interrogation transition. Yeah, the scene transition is just a cut to the monitor room, but then the camera transitions from the monitor room through the interlacing screen into the interrogation room. That wide angle cc footage as it gets floaty and goes through the monitor primes us, almost subliminally, that this is another dreamlike moment. With the agents in control of the room, we can expect some dark fantasy moment which the bug and the mouth thing totally pays off. Going through that monitor is so subtle, I love it.

I had never noticed the waking up scenes and the parallels with the code and the phone at the beginning and end of the movie!! The film was brilliantly storyboarded, and you can also see that craft in the transitions of Cloud Atlas.

Great video! When making my video on The Matrix I had the same problem, I could make a dozen videos about the trilogy and still have more to say. My first script covered the visual effects but I ended up settling with philosophy as the main subject...still kinda want to make the other one.

Thank u for going in depth, it revealed how to make transitions connect with each scene and to make every scene full of meaning and direction. u manifested the depth of the movie and go beyond the surface of an action movie. this will help me i incredibly.

People and even critics tend to forget that if a movie passes the test of time, there is something deeper than fancy VFX, hype or marketing. Something worked, something connected and something was created. This is a good example. I would like to see more on pop culture stuff. I like deeper cinema analysis (and this was an example of it), but applied to cultural phenomena or pop culture seems to be a problem for a lot of people.

The Matrix is a modern masterpiece of filmmaking craft, that too often gets ignored because it's just such a fun, badass film. Would love to see another video about it.

I love multiple films, multiple styles, multiple features, but no other film did hit me the way The Matrix did, no matter how many times I see this film, never gets old, its more like an art masterpiece, a template for what it can be accomplished!

This is wicked good commentary. The Matrix just seemed to blend together so well, I never thought to pay attention to it like that. It sort of feels like the transitions made much larger scenes than stitching together smaller ones. More of this!

Make the 5 hour matrix video -- maybe talk about what changed from movie to movie -- what caused the decline in quality -- if you see one? -- at the time I don't think I really understood why I thought the sequels where worse --- I would love to see your take on it though :)

The majority of this can be credited to the insanely tight storyboards that were done for this. Like a Hitchcock film, The Matrix, visually was complete before they even pitched it to Joel Silver. Having amazing comic book artists draw your storyboards gives you that comic panel style scene-to-scene transition. Love me The Matrix. Love. It. Great essay!

Magnificent. Except for the visuals and the world-building, the thing that inspired me as a soon-to-become a filmmaker was the simple line "Not like this. Not like this.". Minor character; don't even remember her name, But her realizing her impending doom just gutted me.
