I think it's more an allegory to the rules everyone makes to himself and their impact in the society. No universal rules tells you that you can't be violent, steal or kill, in nature its quite common, but still, even in extreme survival need, there is something in a lot of minds that prevents us from doing it... Fact is, humans invented these rules to have a fair and civilized society and are taught from early ages but if someone want to bend or just violate these laws, nothing can stop him except another one that also bend the rules.

Not all actors are made for the same role. Different personalities will suit different roles better. We wouldn't have had the same Neo if Will Smith took the role. And nobody could replace Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus. Or Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. It doesn't matter how their acting is rated. They suit their characters best. And they can all act the part. All their characters are easily recastable with any other young pretty face who's just there for young viewers to see themselves as. They're not hiring experienced talented actors to fit an important role, they're hiring actors purely based on their innate characteristics, not acting talent. They can grab any young activist out of college and give them a week of acting lessons to star in their movies. Those are your terrible actors these days.
