The time had come for Saul’s private anointing and public proclamation as Israel’s king. His coronation, though, was not like that of pagan monarchs: the prophet Samuel used the occasion to preach the Word of God and emphasize God’s sovereignty by identifying Saul as the Lord’s chosen prince.
