When the middle of the film approaches, the filmmakers ask the audience to play a game of "find the fish".
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The Meaning of Life is without a doubt the most tasteless of the Monty Python feature films; it also happens to be one of the funniest. Life's questions are "answered" in a series of outrageous vignettes, beginning with a pre-credits sequence at a staid London insurance company which transforms before our eyes into a pirate ship. One of our favorite bits involve the National Health doctors who try to claim a healthy liver from a still-living donor, pointing out that there's nothing in his contract preventing this. And of course, there's the scene with the world's most voracious glutton, who brings the art of vomiting to new heights before his spectacular demise. Be warned: though hilarious, this may be the grossest bit of comedy filmmaking ever conceived (there aren't enough words in the world to describe it in detail!). Loyal Pythonites Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin star in The Meaning of Life and share writing responsibilities, while Jones is in the director's chair this time out.

Saw this in a theater while in college. The vast majority of moviegoers where enjoying psychedelics of some kind, not even knowing this scene was coming. When this scene came on the screen it was epic. Most were laughing uncontrollably while others were so confused they thought they were hallucinating. It was awesome.

this was not a fish eye lens, fish eye lenses have barrel distortion. This is just a 10mm wide angle lens.

The first time I saw this (in the '80s), my brother and I were laughing so hard I cried. What made it better: my dad didn't get this humor at all. He was staring blankly at the screen--not even a smile, just mild confusion. That made it even funnier.

I was very young when I first saw this movie and the two parts that scared the hell out of me were seeing Mr. Creosote's exposed, beating heart and this section. Even as a small child it wasn't the guy in lingerie or the extra long arms (things that weren't "normal") that frightened me, it was the goddam elephant mask. To this day I still don't understand why.

What always fascinates me about this scene is how Terry Jones hands and arms work. Nice special effects.

Those are his real arms and hands. They are using special effects whenever his limbs and hands appear normal, in the other scenes.
