Honestly it's good to see with Disguise as a new ability that the card Break Open is finally gonna be as bad as it's always been, and always will be.

On its face without considering any cards that synergize with either keyword, is disguise not just a stricly better morph? Good video by the way, thanks for the quick summary!

I think that disguise is better Morph in the same way that Discover is better Cascade. Their making it a bit stronger and it’s probably going to be the evergreen version of that mechanic going forward

Okay, that's kind of what I figured, only I wanted to be sure because so often in magic there is the tiniest little difference in things that make a huge difference and I was worried I missed something. Lots of yugioh in this set, but it all works really well with the theme!@@williamedge5130

 @williamedge5130 To quote the Head Designer for MTG - "We don't like the future to be the victim of the past." Better versions of old mechanics are always likely to appear :)

I’m not really excited about any of these (thankfully because the last 2 sets had some really fun precons), but Mirko and Kaust would be the only 2 that really interest me. I just got the morph precon from a while back though and Mirko just seems like the non-experience counter version of Meren of Clan Nel Toth, so they’re easy passes for me. The set as a whole looks cool though, so I’ll for sure pick up the singles that I like.

Do you get both the solved and unsolved effects if a case is solved? For example, would case of the ransacked lab both reduce instants/sorceries as well as let you draw? Or do you only get the solved effect?
@MTGRecon

You get both once the case is solved.

The Cases say "If unsolved, solve at the beginning of your end step". This confuses me. Can someone explain this?

I honestly don’t care about the new mechanics. I investigate coming back is great as it’s very interesting to me personally. I wish they’d make more incubate cards/effects later on so they don’t have the potential of that wasted on a single set.

Question, how do you become unable to turn the card face up?

I was genuinely excited for this set, until all these mechanics were announced. I don’t think it was necessary to have cases or even disguise. Morph was enough.

Well, if you going to have an entire set centered around mysteries, these mechanics fit so much better. And let's be honest, like it or not, Morph and Manifest are pretty weak mechanics balance wise in this day and age that, if there were mechanics that needed a major boost, it was these 2

@@alpha34098 yeah I get what you're saying. I just don' think we need new mechanics? or perhaps more accurately convoluted ones at that to make a set good. I mean interesting card design for constructed without relying on mechanics, flavourful artwork, and story is all that's really needed. As far as balance wise, I don't think morph is a weak mechanic but a rather cumbersome mechanic. Morph being a special action is already quite powerful. I guess I';m saying the mechanic isn't weak, but the cards which currently utilise them may be underpowered/left behind, however adding more morph support and updating/creating new cards with morph would increase the power level of morph - I get that while they're at it why not just revisit it and 'fix' it, and maybe they have. Perhaps one new mechanic is enough? We have plenty of existing mechanics which could arguably fit within this set like delve, cipher, cycling, dredge, foretell, shadow etc... I do kind of get that they have to add some mechanics for the Clue mtg game... but it's unnecessary, and it's like they're doing it because of the toys division not mtg side. I do appreciate that they're trying to push the boundaries etc. I just feel like these create more cumbersome games. For example I do really like the idea of Cases, but I feel like in practice it's too much of a mini game within a game that it will be avoided in most playgroups like battles, dungeon etc.

@@GallantLeethe biggest problem with Morph and Manifest that makes them so weak nowadays is the fact that, most of the time, they dying to spot removal (which has become so prevalent today than when these were unveiled) before they have a chance to do something. Specially in the early game. This is the best answer to fix the problem but you know that Wizards doesn't like to change the Rule Book willingly. That's why they prefer to add new mechanics than changing the old ones As for Cases, I do enjoy mechanics that allow to make it more interactive and dynamic rather than keep the game too stale just for the sake of someone. And Cases is one of those mechanics

I think the mechanics are getting more and more wild. It is becoming confusing and not having much of an impact. I seriously doubt any of the mechanics will be used again in a different set. I am of the opinion that, unlike before, nowadays the mechanics are introduced only for the namesake and only for that particular set. They do not have any use outside out the set. Why should players have to go through and learn so much just not to use the mechanic again once the set rotates out. Even in eternal formats, I doubt they would make an impact. What do you think?

As someone learning MTG and who is NEW to it, trying to learn all of these new terms and and mechanics is distressing. There's no way I'm going to remember every single term and mechanic. I'm going to be asking constantly what things on cards mean. I thought it was bad when I was trying to learn this game three years ago but it sounds like it's only gotten more confusing.

Learning Magic is a really weird thing. I have a friend who’s getting into the game right now and I think it’s the realization that nobody knows every card and every mechanic is an important one. Personally I know the popular ones, and the new ones since I’ve started playing. But there are a ton of mechanics, especially old ones, that I don’t know how they work, and that’s totally fine. The nice thing is that most of the time, magic is very literal. There’s not often a bunch of interpretation required, so learning the base vocabulary rather than mechanics is really helpful. I hope this helps in some way.
