Desmond Doss was not your average hero.
He would become a Medal of Honor recipient, the United States of America's highest and most prestigious military award, as a combat medic who saved many of his comrades lives in battle without firing a single shot - because he did not take a weapon into combat because of his religious beliefs.

Fun fact: How many people Doss saved is actually disputed. His company states he saved about 100, Doss disagreed, he said the number was closer to 50. They agreed to meet in the middle, and call it 75.

@RangerPhantomSAS
@RangerPhantomSAS 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, Hollywood always has to change things up or leave things out. They are all about fiction, but truth is far stranger and better. That's why they use the phrase "based on a true story". When you finally research what really happened, the movie or T.V. show always disappoints.

My grandfather was a prisoner of war camp from the Japanese. He was starved, tortured, beaten, sexually abused, any harm you can think off he had that done to him but not once did he give any names or the plan to the Japanese soldiers. In my eyes my grandfather was a hero. And in my eyes so is Desmond Doss. The true hero’s are the ones who don’t look like super hero’s. 🙏

My wife and I had the honor of meeting Desmond Doss in the early to mid 1980's in CT when he came to testify to his experience in WWII. It is an understatement to say he was a humble man. He was the kindest, most honorable man I ever had the privilege to speak with. God was most certainly with him. The bookwas far better than the movie. My guess is, Mel Gibson had to dial it back as to seem more believable. Amazing story, amazing man, amazing God who shielded and guided him.

I don't know how it works with Protestant Christians, but at least with Catholic Christians, it must be at least one miracle attributed to him, at least with Catholic Christians we have the blessed, this group of Catholic people are recognized as something relative as saints but without a miracle attributed to them, and most of the times blessed becomes saints, for example a Mexican saint Saint José Sánchez del Río

Desmond Doss was NOT an American soldier. He was one of the Soldiers of Christ. He didn't fight for the United States, he fought for life itself, the lives of his fellow men and enemies too. A true inspiration to anyone, faithful or not. You don't need to have faith to respect or understand the humility and strength of this man - but faith sure helps.

I met Mr. Doss sometime in the mid to late 80’s. He was a old man by then. I was struck by his quiet and unassuming demeanor. He was almost awkward. What a man. Years later I was in the Marine Corps I met Robert E. Bush, another CMH awardee. I asked him about Mr. Doss. He said they did indeed know each other as they traveled in the CMH circle. He had high praises for Mr Doss. I feel so honored to have met that man. May he Rest In Peace. God bless America and God bless Mr. Trump.

The man was such a madlad that they had to put bullshit in the story purely because *the full tale would damage the suspension of disbelief*. Its like the lawful good version of Mad Jack Churchhill. Nobody would believe he would even survive it if he had to do this feat during the day. Or if he yielded his spot on the stretcher. Or was truly only inspired by faith to never touch a weapon.

My favorite part of his story is that after he was injured and being evacuated from the war zone, he realized that he lost his bible in the battlefield. He asked the people at the aid station if they had seen it but they said no. Eventually word got around to his division that he lost his bible. Knowing how important Doss' bible was to him, the division started looking for it, in a warzone, and ended up finding a month later and sending it to him shortly after. It goes to show how much the division respected him and how much they grew from when they were fresh recruits.

The fact that they actually changed their behavior after he first helped them out in training is what made them slightly more mature than school drama.

I just like to imagine how history and time could have been different at any second. Had some men taken a single step out of place. A stray bullet could have changed time. History and war have a scary mix.

Actually if anything, he put more of that deed onto God. He believed God was the reason behind it all. So he felt proud to be able to be chosen by God in that way to save as many as he did. He was extremely humble.

I think he was probably really sad he couldn't have saved more, and lived with the weight of that for the rest of his life. If he was proud he would have stopped at a reasonable number most people would have saved 9 people and stop like that's enough of that. He didn't and i think he would have kept going and saved every person in the war if he could have. I don't believe he was proud, even a little bit. And I'm sure the faces of those he couldn't saved were way more of a burden than the faces of those you killed to save yourself.
