People are angry with this movie? That's wild to me. To say this sympathetic towards racism is ridiculous. The guy is burned! It's his karma. And the main characters karma because by doing something destructive she's disfigured this man. I don't necessarily think he gets redeemed, but there is a change there. I think this movie is brilliant. If others don't, it's a huge bummer and they're missing out.
@snakey973

Agree! And not only does Dixon get burned- she perpetuated on him what had been done to her daughter which is a very intentional symmetry...how can people not get that?! The whole pt is violence is not the answer to violence- that is not real justice. The characters both in their emotional pain, were hurting other people around them

I didn't like the movie. It was way too opened-up and, "make of it what you will" for me. Call me lazy, but I just wanted to be told a story and be given some sort of scripted resolution, rather than have to explore my own ideals, feelings and opinions. When it ended, I was like, "Are you fucking kidding me?!", especially when Mildred and Dixon were having 2nd thoughts about killing the guy who obviously raped and burned her daughter. Was it just a coincidence that the guy happened to do the exact same thing to a girl whilst on duty in Iraq, or was his commanding officer protecting one of his troops by lying about him not being in the US at the time of the murder?

I don't think Mildred didn't care about Jason at all at the end. She might've started off being all cold, calculative and untrusting but after she realized what she had done to Dixon ....and how Dixon was trying to redeem himself and how she mistreated James despite the kindness and attention he showered her with... she became a more warmer and started giving a fvck about other people's feelings.

I'm with you, Roman. As I watched it, I kept saying to myself, "Who talks like this?" (And I live in the rural south!) Take the office assistant, for example...or Sam Rockwell's horrible and utterly improbable buffoonery...or Dinklage's lines as he leaves the diner...or Willoughby's discussions with his kids. Though McDormand and Harrelson did what they could with such a bad script, the rest of the acting in the movie was so bad. So overdone to match the completely overwrought script.

I think it is more about the unearned implicit character redemption rather than "The film is racist" which, to be fair, is true. Dixon did a brave thing getting the DNA of that guy and getting beat to hell for it, but that doesn't necessarily mean he is a good person. I never thought "Gee, Officer Dixon is a good person", he's a complicated person that has some good, and some really bad, tendencies. To me, the bad outweighs the good with Officer Dixon. That being said, if he does win Best Supporting Actor (which I think should go to Woody instead), people will inevitably freak out over it and make it political. That would be tragic given how the film's message about "anger begets more anger" is so important to learn. But apparently, Three Billboards itself will beget more anger.

Politics influence life itself. Sports, Hollywood, and Business are all influenced by political decisions (tax credits, civil rights, etc.), so people tend to believe that they can use those outlets to influence politics. Politics is simply a debate on how humans should govern themselves and how the institution we establish to govern other humans operate. So when somehow has a platform, then tend to give their philosophies. The problem is that 140 (or 280) characters is not the best way to explain to people why you think or believe a certain thing. So then it's all insults. Even in 1 minute acceptance speeches, because you're gonna piss off someone.

The marginalized characters are undeveloped and serve only to suffer, forgive, and help the straight able-bodied white guy learn a lesson. They are depicted in a sympathetic light, but that's not the same as them being strong characters.
@kingofurukgilgamesh7828
@kingofurukgilgamesh7828 6 жыл бұрын
upchuckles Everybody in the film exists just to suffer, then forgive each other. There are not marginalized characters suffering and causing others to suffer, and there are marginalized characters doing both of those things. There are not marginalized chatacters who forgive, and not forgive, and there are marginalized characters doing those things. The movie treats them as equals of the able-bodied rich straight white guy, who is dying of cancer and commits suicide. They are equally bad people, who suffer equally. So you are the one picking out the marginalized, not the movie.

I think there was some redemption for him. Dixon like Mildred carried around so much hate inside him which fuelled his violent actions. His hate made him a racist person but when he reads that letter he learns that hate isn't the answer, that he needs to learn to love others. Maybe he doesn't fully understand this concept by the end of the film but no one changes overnight. I think there is a shift in his character when he reads that letter which makes him redeemable.

Dixon never did anything needing of redemptions, his violent outbursts are never selfish. He's trying to protect the Chiefs honor in all occasions in his own way. Violent tendencies don't need redemption he merely needed to stop going down that path. Which he did by choosing to get beat up by the potential rapist. People really over hype how racist he's suppose to be.
@Danny_LDS
@Danny_LDS 5 жыл бұрын
I don't understand why people believe that racism is a nonredeemable quality. Racism and bigotry usually stems from ignorance, if you cant sympathies with racists how will racism ever stop. The film doesn't try to tell you whether or not he has redeemed himself by the end of it. The film leaves it to the viewers interpretation and opinion, and in my opinion I don't think he fully redeemed himself by the end, as mentioned above no one changes over night, but I do believe he is on the path to redemption.

I think the central issue of the movie was that anger and violence is not the answer to anger and violence- it only perpetuates more of the same and creates further casualties. It's not that Dixon is redeemed- it's that he is a more complex character than we at first thought and he was also capable of good as well as bad...just like Mildred, and that the two characters were more similar than we thought

But if the message of the movie is that anger begets more anger, isn't the idea of them killing the rapist a step back from the end goal? For me it's all about that cycle of anger and revenge, and the ending suggests that even after all they've been through these two characters still haven't really learned their lesson. It does leave it open that perhaps they might pull back, but if they kill him then the cycle continues.

I concur , for me there are 2 options 1) it is that guy bit of a coincidence that it is the same guy that came into her shop, when they turn up she is gunna see who it is and waste the guy. Also all the charcters seem to be good and bad and make mistakes of judgement.....The black cop does the right thing all the way , maybe he made an error in saying the suspect wasn't in the country as told by a commanding officer , he says "He came back 9 nmonths ago" the murder was 7 months ago........... 2) the story is based on a true story , if you read that it seems that it looks like it is the Ex - husband , examine the ex husband in the film , it keeps getting pointed out that he likes young girls/women , has anger/control issues towards women , he burns the billboards

Also, these people don’t get that theses racists are HUMAN too like all of us and can be redeemed. Also 99% of racists aren’t pure evil people, there is a reason they are like this mostly due to their upbringing, insecurity and inner hatred that they feel the need to target on others. How can we help these people if we don’t give them sympathy and treat them as human?
@dunnowy123
@dunnowy123 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I completely agree with this. I know so many people who treat racism as if it means a person is wholly condemned to hell for being a racist and while yes, racism is terrible, that doesn't negate a person's humanity. It doesn't relinquish their membership to the human race. It means they're a flawed person and flawed people can CHANGE. You can kill racism with kindness, not vitriol. Like it or not, you're never going to *solve* racism by shouting at it. You can, perhaps, turn a racist person away from it by showing them, through your fundamental humanity, that you're a normal person and that their impressions are wrong.

Three Billboards is one of the best character driven movies I've seen in some time. A movie that shows the truest examples of what it means to be a regular person. No one is all good, or all evil. There's gray all over these people and it makes them all the more relatable for it. Not to mention, I started grinning like an idiot, when I saw Sam Rockwell appear on screen. Damn I love that man! @darqjade
@darqjade 6 жыл бұрын
But that's just the thing. People, real people, make stupid mistakes. It's not all black and white. Like the sheriff for instance. He feels like he did his best with the case, he keeps Sam Rockwell's character on staff, because he thinks he has the potential to be a better cop, if not, a better person. Frances' character is grieving and it blinds her to the bad things she does, even though all she wants in justice for her daughter. They're not assholes (even though they seem to act like it from time to time). They're just people, moulded by their lives and the people around them, but they also have positive sides to them. Frances loves her daughter and her son. Woody loves his family and his job. Rockwell loves his overbearing mother and also admires, respects and loves his boss. We are all made up of good and bad parts. What makes us better is when we recognize our negatives and try to correct them and I feel all three main characters are trying to be better.

Very insightful video. I agree with most of it. To me the film is about dealing with crippling grief and anger from the two main characters especially. I found the ending to be a happy one actually, surprisingly....you don't usually get such a thing with a film like this one. After Chief Willoughby's death you can see the two coming together and the road to redemption has begun. It's fitting therefore that the film ends with a road trip. When Mildred confesses to burning down the station you know then when you see the two of them kind of smile at each other that they are going to be alright.... I am pretty sure they are not going to kill anybody either. I guess that's kind of naive of me to think that way...but I believe Mcdonaugh left it open for all kinds of interpretations.

Am I the only one who actually loved Dixon after the credits rolled? He’s now my favorite fictional character of all time. He’s just such a bittersweet character, and I don’t think he deserves any hate after the credits roll, because the amount of change he showed by the end honestly melted my heart. Also, it is OBVIOUS that Mildred grows to care for Dixon at the end. Idk where you got her only wanting to go with him just because he has a lead and a gun.

Well said, sir. It is brave in todays world to publicly bring up logical, insightful, and intelligent commentary on how many use blame and race from the opposing position of what the common narrative would be while glancing at those two words. There is bound to be backlash from those triggered who have heard words that anger them rather than the ideas, facts, and concepts about this counterproductive mindset. You demonstrated truthful, unbiased, and convincing ethos in a clear way. Subbed.

The movie plays with how rigid we are in our thinking. It is a journey of black and white decisions, black and white points of view (I am right and you are wrong). HOWEVER, the characters at the end (the two in the car) switch their thought process from 'black-and-white mentality’ to 'let's think this through.' That is a major shift, that reflects society and where it needs to go.

I just watched Three Billboards yesterday and thought it was great! I have a few video essays I noted to watch on it and I’m so glad that this was the first, I’ve felt this same way for ages but have been shouted down by people whenever I mention it… ironic, right? Anyway my point is it’s good to hear that someone feels the same way!

Had never heard of this movie till my dad started pressuring me to watch it for like a month straight. I finally did, and damn it was so good. Didn’t even think about this movie dealing with racism, just thought about a parent’s pain from losing their child in such a horrific way. It took me on a roller coaster ride, lots of things happened that I was not expecting and just blew my mind away. Amazing movie.

The way I saw this movie is how anger, pain, and bitterness can eat you up. Made her not see or be able to see the Sheriff’s side. I thought Dixon should’ve been arrested but later saw that the Sheriff saw so much in him and when Dixon saw that, he changed. It opened his eyes. It seemed to be abt healing, forgiveness.

another McDonagh's movie "In Bruges" had a a really good scene where characters Ray and Jimmy were discussing the black-versus-white war. I think their conclusions are a lot alike with the idea of "should you really pick a side?" presented in three Billboards

All of Willabys dying wishes are coming true. Thats the message. In his letters he asks things of the and hopes for the best. It shows the turmoil and struggle of each character f4om the poor decisions. It shows forgiveness from a victim. And it shows how they will in fact catch her daughters killer ( which was Willibys dieing wish) They both will recognize him and the shotgun will be justice.

I loved this film. I knew I really liked the film when I realized it was going to end without some closure. Then I rewatched it and realized it did end with closure and that’s when I knew I loved it. For those of you who didn’t like the film I explore you to try to be more sympathetic.

I didn’t see this as a ‘social commentary.’ I saw I as a film profiling people distraught by grief anger and failure throughout different episodes of their life. The ending of the film is what separated it from another drama to an Oscar contender. It completely changed the meaning. It shows that Rockwell and McDormand can coexist even with so much hate and sadness consuming them.

You did a great job articulating the deeper ideas behind this movie - as well as this "stepping on eggshell" culture we currently live in where everyone is scared to have a voice due to certain people constantly trying to label people and group them into camps.

Ironic that a movie about people acting in stupid ways because of anger was met with anger. At its core, this movie is about realistic, if not childish, people. Also, the beauty of the ambiguous characters making their own kind of foreshadowing towards the ambiguous ending. A beautiful film.

There's so much thought provoking moments in this video. But at certain point you just dont need to explain yourself anymore or keep fighting "many people", its futile to utter any more words. Individuals who want to understand, will. Those who didn't understand or got offended are not here to understand. I just watched this movie, it was a masterpiece.

I thought the point of the ending was to show the healing effect of letting go of the crippling anger on both their parts. I don't really believe they will end up carrying out their justice-by-proxy, but that was part of their journey toward understanding each other and themselves.

I understand the themes the director was looking for and that you mention but I thought the film was about letting go . Chief willoughby let’s go of his life and the remainder of his life so his family remember him as a fun and loving man rather than a weak sick man. Red lets go of his anger towards Dixon. Dixon let’s go of his rascism and begins work to Better himself and become a detective. (Although he isn’t redeemed he’s on the road to redemption imo) Mildred is the one we don’t know about she may well kill the rapist and let the anger consume her or she may well stop and let him live thus letting go of her destructive rage. Maybe I’m missing something but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that characters have similar arch’s

I don't think Dixon beating the shit out of that kid and throwing him out that window gets talked about enough...To me, that was completely realistic as I've seen where people (who's parents had some pull) beat the shit out off someone in broad day light in small (Texas) town and get away Scott free. The part that followed, where the kid and Dixon were in the hospital room was really what made the movie for me...I mean him giving him that orange juice...just damm...That part was so moving to me that I barley registered whatever else that followed...This was rife with narrative set ups/expectations intentionally designed to fail...And it seems like it couldn't make up its its mind, so it just ended.
