I actually like how unsatisfying the ending is, it's such a great representation of how the characters feel.

Tom Ward I thought it was a great representation of the theme too and life sometimes you don’t get the closure you want and you have to find another way to deal with it

BIG SPOILER DONT SCROLL DOWN. I was really annoyed by it, but at the same time i really liked it. Because sometimes you just don't get the answers your want. And you have to kind of make up your own ending.

"Unpredictability" is the perfect word for this film. I was blown away by this. It kept my attention from start to finish and I just didn't know where the story was taking me. One of the best films of the year by far.

The best part about this film is how even the characters who are initially seen as assholes end up making you feel very sympathetic towards them.

Spoilers ahead: The ending was perfect because the point of the film was that there isn't always resolution. There is not always something that makes you feel comfortable and life just keeps going on. Mildred faces this when she finally realizes that there is no chance of finding the killer, and we face that truth with the ending. That is where the arcs end.

More importantly perhaps, they both realised that, in spite of that, they were still capable of doing something. It may or may not have been the right thing, but it was a way for them to confront their anger and the injustice while attempting to prevent the same thing from happening to someone else, as opposed to simply waiting for a resolution.

I don’t agree with you on the ending. The film wasn’t a detective who done it type movie, it was a character piece. The movie is about the way the characters are effected by this one decision, not about finding the guy.

If there's one thing this movie does excellently, it's that it showcases the complexity of not just life, but also loss. It's dirty and hard and sorting through it is shockingly less simple than you'd think. If you've lost a loved one suddenly (I lost my kid brother in an auto accident 5 years ago), the movie will resonate with you much more strongly than if not. The ambiguous ending is absolutely perfect because it further cements that grief is hard and navigating it is different from person to person. It's not pretty. The ending is, at least to me, far less ambiguous than people seem to think. Originally they were going to go kill that guy, but it ultimately came to be a cathartic experience of just....driving out there and not being alone. And Mildred smiled at the end....something she was accused of never doing. They will not kill that man.

That's how I saw the ending. It seems they both overcame something seemingly impossible in their own way and would ultimately protect each other from slipping too far over the edge.

Stephen Albright I think I would've rather seen the character of Mildred come full circle. The ending didn't wrap up her character for me. I think the movie would've benefited slightly had she realized how her actions were hurting those around her like with Sam Rockwell's character. Then at the end instead of making smarter decisions they just decide to play with the idea of more dumb decisions. I liked this movie a lot by the way, but I could've used another 15 minutes of it. There are holes in the movie that I wish weren't there. I'd still give it about a 8.5 or 9 out of 10 though.

One of the most unique films I’ve ever seen. The sarcasm was top notch. The moments of hate and anger that led to karma, which eventually led to self realization. Chris I love the intelligence of your reviews and the way you connect both the art history of film making and the diverse material / issues that are being tackled by the films you review. I haven't seen this film as yet but since seeing your reviews of other films, I became a subscriber to your channel. I love films, both the art form and importantly the material they choose to tackle. Am a minor film buff myself. I saw my first foreign film when I was 16 years old. Loved it. Have film makers in my family and Im a writer of sorts. America has a long history of great art and film making. Although for me the fanchise machine is a bit tiring. Here is a bit of trivia for you. The earliest known feature length narrative film in the world was the Australian production, The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906). Anyway Chris keep up the great work. A new Australian fan of your channel.

As far as the ending, I love it! Chris mentions he was so invested in finding what out what happens to Mildred that the ambiguity at the end disappointed him a little. I believe it was quite powerful, reflecting the same ambiguity that, not just the characters, but also everyone who’s been in her situation feels as they search for such closure but sadly will most likely never find it.

In Bruges was my favorite film for a decade. I was a little disappointed with seven psychopaths but liked it more upon re-watch. Expectations were a little too high after In Bruges. This film I liked almost as much as In Bruges and was deeply satisfying. Mcdonagh, McDormand and Rockwell are all great. Mcdonagh creates and fleshes out awesome characters.

He lives in the middle of nowhere as far as I know and as we all know Loving Vincent was one of those films that made it to very few theatres and then made a Landmark Theatres BOOM and that is typically the opposite as they usually filter out into the small, single, locally owned and operated independent theatres for a month or two or just show at that small theatre and you may be VERY LUCKY to find them! That said, he may not be able to see it locally and may have to wait if it makes it to TV or online! However, I would love a review!

It's probably the most overrated movie of the year. It's a tremendous effort no doubt, but it services a terrible, exposition heavy story and it's nowhere near as beautiful as it could have been (rotoscoping always looks weird). It's wonderful that every frame is literally a painting, but they honestly could not have told the weak story in a duller way. They had the possibility of going wild seeing how it's an animated movie but they were just content with imitating Van Gogh's paintings as if that were enough.

I disagree. I loved 'Loving Vincent." It tells the story of how the community reacted to Vincent's death and we had a look into the last days of Vincent's life. I thought the writing, acting, painting and soundtrack was beautiful. I bought it when it came out have watched it more than a few times already.

For me, the most interesting part was definitely character development. Many characters were not super likable, and for a majority of the movie there was no real "protagonist". Every character had their flaws unlike the perfect protagonists of so many other films. It made everything feel so much more real.

Chris I love your reviews and point of view and I know you are a champion of avoiding spoilers. I’d like to encourage you to refrain from mentioning things like the unpredictability of the plot or how a movie isn’t how it seems or things that you didn’t see coming. This invites expectation into my experience and probably others as well. This has been a recent thing I’ve noticed and it has poisoned two of my movie experiences waiting for “the moment that Chris talked about” while watching it - removing me from the immersion. Otherwise, Keep up the good work!

I disagree. Spoiler Alert ...Movies nowadays just lack realism....Now we can decide if they get jailed, they get killed in the act,or they get away with it...for me it is either of the first 2.I wont choose the 3rd becoz they're still committing a crime. Moreover I liked this movie becoz when chief was about to die...I just desperately wanted to reach out to him...saying Evrything is gonna be ok just hold on hold on!!!When he killed himself I shed a tear myself.... Dixon was my fav character as his transition was awesome to watch....Even though he was burned ...beaten....he grew past from that angry self....At first u feel the heat betwn chief and dixon....however after chief passes away....U see the Respect and Lookin upto that dix had 4 the chief....As evryone keeps on hating him chief's departing words like "Seek love be kind u r a gud man u just had bad luck" just changes him as a human being...justt sayin their bond was amazing and the movie was awesome...surely oscarworthy.

But, isn't the dialogue and final shot hinting at them not performing the vigilante justice at all, even if they find'em? That's, like, the whole messafe the movie's trying to tell. Enough anger. And revenge is no more than that... Pure rage. If they kill the fuckers instead of, say, sending them to justice, the film's automatically betraying what it's been trying to say for most of its runtime. So the movie instead chose to end with their smiles since that's where it was meant to end. When the point had been made and there's nothing else to be said. It isn't trying to give you a choice, it's telling you they've made theirs.

I've been watching your channel for a long time. Your reasoning behind why you do or don't like movies is solid and understandable. Even if there's a movie where I disagree with your rating (which rarely happens), your reasons and points are still valid and I can understand your perspective. Hey Chris, thanks for the review, but I couldn't help but thinking that you overlooked something. You said - and I paraphrase - that she calls out the town for their racism and bigotry. But that would mean that she is different, but she isn't. She is an angry, guilty, selfish person who doesn't care who she hurts as long as she can push her own guilt away. She doesn't call out the problem, because she is part of it.

Finally got a showing of this movie in our town! It was amazing and we loved it! As for the ending, i felt completely satisfied one scene before the ending, when they drove past the billboards, i was good with the ending, but we also got that bonus fantastic 1 min dialogue with them in the car that even more so solidified my love for this great film. So fortunately for me, the one negative you had ends up not bothering me! A+ movie!!

But everything WAS wrapped up. They're not doing it. End of story. It'd go against the story's message and the final exchange between McDormand and Rockwell helps showcase that, with the final shot of the smile sementing it. Does no one pay attention to details anymore?
