Yeah that is so true, most of them are absolutely messed up and disturbing.

In college, I studied a book that had 17 versions of the story. There are lessons to learn throughout life, so if things seem messed up, well, we have a lot of messes in this world, alongside the beautiful things that happen. We have choices to make about how to live, and what ignites our passions to make the world a better place. Stories can bring these lessons home to us, our children, and communities. "Dark stuff" is incredibly serious. Tell the stories that help form the consciences of our children.

Well here is the Chinese version: there was a girl named Yeh-Shen and her stepmother. Her stepmother wants fish but the fish only come out when Yeh-Shen was there. So the stepmother dressed up to look like her. She takes the fish home and eats it. An old man tells Yeh-Shen that the fishes bones are powerful, so Yeh-Shen gets the bones and goes to the festival that the king find one of her shoes and finds HER. After he realized how rudely the stepmother treated , he sent them away to love in darkness forever, and left Yeh-Shen to be Queen with him the King.!!!!!!!!

I'm from Germany and have grown up with the brother Grimms story and still love this version the most. And as a child I honestly don't notice something brutal or disturbing. (and sorry for my bad English)

I heard, that Cinderella’s original story, was that her step sisters SAWED off their heels, to fit the shoe. And some birds, are their eyes off.

No matter how the stories vary, we all know the Cinderella stories include murder and maiming.

The Brothers Grimm didn't write any stories, they collected them but other than that it was interesting.

I remember 2 other versions of the story: A Chinese version where it was only a stepmother and one stepsister. This cinderella befriended a magic gold fish who granted her wishes and helped her get to the ball, in gold slippers. After the prince finds her and marries her, the stepmother and stepsister die when the cave they live in collapses. Then there's a native American version where cinderella is horribly scarred and bullied by her stepsisters because of it. When the sisters go to marry the most handsome man in the village-who happens to be invisible-, the man's sister turns them away because they try to lie and say they've seen him to gain favor. When cinderella auditions, she proves she really does know and see him, and is accepted. She gets to bathe in a magic lake that washes her scars away. She and the prince live happily while the sisters get nothing.

In one story on the way home from the ball cinderella breaks her foot and it get all swelled up and doesn’t fit in the shoe, and then she didn’t have a happily ever after

When I was a little kid my mom had a copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales from the late 1890's. In the version of Cinderella I read when the Prince came calling with slipper in hand the Stepmother cut part of the heel off of her one daughter and the little toe off the foot of the other daughter to make the shoe fit, but the blood leaking out and the girl's squirms of pain gave them away. Also, at the end of the story, after the Prince married Cinderella He punished the wicked Stepmother and Stepsisters for their cruelty by have them nailed into spiked barrels and rolled down a hill into the river to drown. It was really quite gruesome stuff. Almost all of the stories had awful punishments like that for the baddies. Fairy Tales for little kids in the Victorian era...lolol.

In the Greek version of Cinderella, the girl gets her fancy clothes from mother nature and her daughters. At the ball, the prince puts honey on the stairs when the girl runs away. Then, she takes off her shoes to get out of the honey and that's how the prince got her shoes.

in one of the stories ( I think by the Grimm brothers), it was said after Cinderella is united with her prince. Her stepmother was cursed to dance until her feet burned or until she died. I also think that she was to dance on fire.

I think "Droit de Signor"(sp?) actually was that the lord could sleep with any young bride who lived under his rule. On her wedding night. Before her new husband did. I've also heard that the whole business with finding the one girl who fit the slipper was symbolic of making sure she was a virgin. The two sisters' feet being bloody implied that something else might be bloody -- in other words that they had been "up to something" they weren't supposed to be.

I heard There was a version where the birds ate the stepsisters and carried them away after they cut their feet so they could get it just right until they had no more feet.

You missed Aschenbrödel it’s similar to Aschenputtel with a much sweeter touch to it. It’s a Czech movie. Aschenbrödel is brought 3 hazelnuts which imply three wishes so she wishes for a Hunter garment, the classic ball clothing and in the end a wedding dress. It isn’t as brutal as Aschenputtel and is my absolute favourite movie I watch it every year around the holiday season which is kind of a tradition in Germany- you should definitely watch it!

In the Thailand Version Cinderella is fed up with her step sisters that she chops them up and puts their body parts in a jar and serves it to her stepmother to which does not realize she was eating her daughters until she saw the eyeballs at the bottom. Out of shock and sadness she dies

The story of "Into the woods" sticks more to the book.

I am Irish and the Fair ,Brown and Trembling story was one of my favourite stories when I was a child and it is no where near as dark! Trembling is the most beautiful not the most powerful and her sisters don't let her go to church so she asks the chicken minder for a new dress and she gives her beautiful dresses every Sunday with a horse as well. She stands outside the church each Sunday and the prince sees her and falls in love with her. He finds out who she is through the Cinderella method and fights all the other princes for her hand. She marries him but Fair is jealous and she throws Trembling into the sea where she is swallowed by a whale. Every day she is thrown up and seen by a shepherd boy and she tells him to tell the prince to kill the whale to free her from it's curse but every day Fair gives the boy a potion to make him forget all about Trembling. One day Trembling realises and tells the boy not to take anything from Fair and he goes and tells the prince and the prince kills the whale and they all live happily ever after!

After the step sisters cut their toes, birds go and blind them and the step mother. I love the way you tell stories by the way

The story of Tam and Cam is pretty dark, especially at the end, where Tam gets her revenge on her sister and stepmother, by having Cam jump into a hole where boiling water is poured onto her, and she has Cam's corpse made into a sauce. The sauce is than delivered to their mother, saying that it's from Cam, she eats the delicious sauce at every meal, while a crow calls out about eating her own daughter's flesh, and when the jar is emptied does the mother discover her daughter's skull where she dies of shock.

If you watched the movie "into the woods", you'd probably see that at the end of the story, Cinderella called her birds and they bulged out the eyes of the step sisters and the stepmother, causing them to go blind.... that's pretty evil but I guess it's karma!

Some versions of Cinderella said she visit the ball multiple times before losing her shoe I read a version called "Mossycoat" in which the woman, also named "Mossycoat" have a magical coat of the same name that can transport her anywhere. She also had two beautiful gowns and gold slippers to fit her tiny, tiny feet. She came to work at the castle of a noble family, and worked in the kitchen where she was picked on by the cooks because how pretty she was (she was even beaten on the head with a spoon). When the Noble son held those balls, Mossycoat would put the cooks to sleep "Magically" and go to the ball.

I remember reading somewhere that at the end of a cinderella story the stepsisters were blinded because the birds that helped cinderella pecked their eyes out for punishment.

I think at the end the birds also pecked away one of the sisters' eyes. anyway, my mum didn't know how to speak english when I was a toddler so she bought us fairytale books like any other parent would, but didn't know that they were all the original series, not the disney ones. so I grew up with the good ol' murders and gore lmao. explains a lot.

Ok there is a similiar one, I think it was Vietnamese tale, I was told as a kid 😂 If you’re bored, just read the end, it way more dark then the above. 😂 There was a girl named Tấm, her mother died when she was young, so her dad marry another woman the gave birth to a girl named Cám. Her dad died, so the stepmother treated her as a worker, the daughter also treated her badly. One day, the two girl went to the river to catch shrimps. Tấm catch a full bucket of shirmps, Cám didn’t get any because she was playing. Cám then tricked her stepsister to take a shower in the river to wash of the mud in her hair, Cám took all the shirmps and pour it into her bucket. Cám ran home, Tấm then cried because she knew she would get hit by her stepmother when she get home. While she is crying, a wizard (I think this is a closet meaning) came out and told her to look in her bucket for a fish, he said to raise it in her well with her own portion of rice, also when feed read a chant so the fish will go up to eat. Tấm did do that for a good amount of time. Eventually the mother and her daughter knew and has caught the fish while Tấm was take the ox to the grassland, they ate the fish and buried it bones. Tấm cried when can’t find her fish, the wizard then tell her it has been killed, he told her to find the bones and bury it under four of her bed legs. A chicken helped her when she gave it rice (it actually not rice, it is a earlier stage when rice didn’t edible yet). The the King opened a festivial, Tấm wanted to go with the mother and Cám, but the mother made her picking out rice and wheat (it just an example). Tấm cried again and the wizard help her. Tấm go to the festivial but lose her one of her shoes in the river(it made of silk). The guards find it and bring to the King, the King thought the shoe was very pretty so demand who fit the shoe will become the Queen. The villangers tried it on but did not fit, included Cám, the Tấm walked in and tried, it of course fit. Tấm became the Queen. Then on the date of her dad death, she returned with the mother and Cám. The mother then tricked her to take the fruit from the high tree, the she cut down the tree, Tấm died. Cám lied to the King Tấm told her to take care of the King. The King believed her and marry Cám. Tấm then turned into a bird, it caught the King attention. He started playing with the bird and leave Cám to the side. Cám was angry so she killed the bird. Tấm turned into a tree, King loved the tree, he would sit there alone until night. Cám cut down the tree and made it into a sewing “machine”. The sewing machine talked on it own scared the maid. Cám burned the machine. The machine ashes got burried under a tree the turn into a fruit, the only on the tree. An old woman came by and took the fruit with promise not to eat it, the fruit smell was really good. Tấm lived and help out the old lady, the lady then found out and adopted Tấm. Long later, the King was on a journey and asked the old lady for a place to sleep. The old lady agreed and offered him some food. The King notice the decoration, asked the lady who made this. The old lady introduce Tấm, the King was shocked but then happy to find Tấm. Tấm returned to the palace with the olad lady. When returned, Tấm demand Cám to be killed and made into food for the stepmother to eat. The mother then went crazy and killed herself.

When I was a little girl my Elementary school hosted a NW children's theater production of Cinderella that featured several different versions of the story back to back. Each version was of a different historical folk telling of Cinderella, each from a different culture with special and unique traits inspired by their various peoples and traditions; The one I recall most vividly was a Native American version that occurs during winter and featured a dress of white (birch?) bark..

one interesting part is that in one of the old german variations, aschenputtel was locked in the dove cage in the familys garden bc the prince was travleling the whole land looking for her after the prom. the stepmother wanted him to marry one of her daughers.
