The Messiah (2/6): Sarah Connolly: "O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion"

Superb mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly sings the recitative: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive ..." followed by the air: "O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion" from Part I of "The Messiah" by George Frederic Handel.
"Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call His name Emmanuel, God with us."
(Isaiah 7: 14; Matthew 1: 23)
"O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion, get thee up into the high mountain. O thou that tellest good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, behold your
God!"
(Isaiah 40: 9)
"Arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee."
(Isaiah 60: 1)
This performance, which was conducted by the Abbey's Organist and Master of Choristers James O'Donnell, took place on the day of the 250th anniversary of the composer's death and in the place where he is buried.
The Abbey Choir was joined by the period-instrument orchestra St. James's Baroque, and soloists Ailish Tynan, Sarah Connolly, Paul Agnew and Jonathan Lemalu.

Beautiful mezzosoprano! Rich and effortless. I just discovered this channel! Thank you for all your uploads! They're inspiring! (I'm a lesser mezzosoprano, which means an "I am not worthy" mezzosoprano, which is a common fach.

Jacob Dixon Oh no, she's clearly a mezzo in my opinion... Compare her to Ferrier or Stutzmann and you'll hear the deepest timbre in their contralto voices

There are different type of contraltos. Timbre is not the only thing to measure a contralto. For instance, you have dramatic, lyrical and middle weight contraltos.

Opera and choral classifications use different names for different ranges. When applying a choral classification, most mezzos would be "altos", not "sopranos". Dame Connolly's operatic classification is mezzo-soprano, appropriately.

Unfortunately, Sarah Connoly's voice deserve better recording quality. Nonetheless, she overpowers the audio mediocrity.

To be a Female Mezzo Soprano she's perfect. But Haendel's original voice was not female, but countertenor. I Think we have Bejun Metha on top if this piece, listen how full and fluent it comes (From 22'10") kzfaq.info/get/bejne/abKjjdOa2dKRk30.html

doubt very much that Handel used a countertenor, please do your research! He used Castrati but they are not at all the same thing as a counter tenor.A castrato would used the full voice a countertenor uses only falsetto. I did read somewhere that he employed very very few counter tenors
