This film bankrupted their studio, because Warner Bros. refused to start paying them for a new project until this one turned a profit. They ended up going under before the film even aired. So, hey. Honestly I always felt bad for the exterminator guy as a kid. The punishment he got was all kinds of messed up when from his perspective he didn't do anything wrong.

She's the queen, she should know keeping Lucas alive would be a tactical move: being a good ruler--human or not---requires that you understand how battles and wars work. She also warns that if Lucas _doesn't_ follow their ways, she (in a calm yet intimidating tone), says he'd be *_"regretful."_*

POV you randomly found this video and are incredibly confused as to why animated characters are discussing the morality of a animated movie you probably saw once as a kid.

Yo, a story about human beings managing to shrink an indiscriminate cosmic destroyer into a human size and teaching it about human ethics would be a cool story though. It’s like Illyria from Angel.

This is a nice dive into the movie, but I do believe you missed two things: 1. The exterminator is shown to get SADISTIC pleasure from killing insects(like I’m pretty sure there’s a deleted scenes of the exterminator in his office torturing a fly by ripping off it’s wings and putting them in his coffee) so that’s most likely why he was punished, while Lucus was just doing it to vent out his frustrations, the exterminator saw pleasure in it. 2. For the ants motivation, I alway saw it as the ants literally bringing Lucus down to their size and showing him how tough it is to be an ant, bring down his ego, and they show him compassion as to convince him that they aren’t emotionless beings. But other then that I really do like the video and hope to see more of these theory-est videos!

I love the unique style of this video and the pretty much all the jokes landed. A great experience all around 10/10.

I never really thought about it before but because of this video it's the only thing that makes sense. Great video. Why didn't I think of it before? Manipulate a human child to be your very own weapon of mass destruction. Now I want a sequel where some other insects try and attack the ant colony, I want an ant war drama.

Clearly you've never had Jelly Bellies. That's the brand showcased in the movie and you'd never mistake a pear, watermelon, cinnamon, or popcorn Jelly Belly for the other flavors. Also, even in crappy cheap jelly beans, the black ones taste _very_ different.

People are seriously scared of bugs, yet they don't realize it's actually way more terrifying to BE a bug. Like, you know a lot of tropes in horror? Zombies, mind control parasites, chestbursters? That's all completely normal in the world of bugs.

I'd like to point out that the Exterminator character wasn't in the book. The book was just about him learning to respect the ants and be a better person.

It seems like a parody or satire of Thus Spoke Zarathustra. There's this weird Man vs God and Man vs Man undertone that cements the idea that nobody can be a Superman because nature and humanity will never come to terms at all. The ants didn't befriend the Ant Bully because they wanted peace but rather wanted a weapon. And right at the end of the movie, we really don't see the protagonist come to peaceful terms with his antagonists. Very odd yet fascinating

I"m starting to love the backstory lore of your character

this review having a backstory is so charming, also the main voice gives me the vibe of an old-timey explorer which i think fits exploring the messaging of media and all that good stuff. its just real neat! also sounds nice and the art is legit great

I just remembered that shrink the exterminator down WAS the plan, but when it failed because of his headphones, they inject him the potion and it goes wrong and they claim victory, so if they actually shrank him down, he could've suffered a worse fate because he was like a demon to them.

I could have lived without seeing a poor caterpillar being eaten from the inside out.

A fun analysis, granted I never sat down with any bug related animated movies as a kid growing up, something about them just bugged me I guess. And aside from the review the presentation is thoughtful and interesting with the characters and personality put forth! Quickly becoming one of my favorite animation discussion channels.

I completely agree with you on the Exterminator. Another thing I thought was weird though was that he clearly sees ants working together with other insects and thinks nothing of it. There were ants riding on flying insects, and he's just like "Yep another day on the job." Seeing that might somewhat convey the idea to a human that ants can communicate with other species to protect their overall wellbeing, but more than anything else, it's just strange that he doesn't really react to it at all if we're to take real life logic into this movie. I love the idea that the ants manipulated Lucas. That's awesome!

Ants are actually very good for the garden. They make quick work of carcasses, moving them down into the ground to function as fertilizer. No need to eradicate ants from a garden, that's the best place for them.

All I could think about while watching this was that absolutely no therapist would ever talk like that during a session.

I never liked that movie because... i felt that the "villain" wasn't evil He was HIRED by the protagonist to do exactly that It's as if someone hire some mercenaries to intervene somewhere and then the contractor by some reason change its mind and start calling them evil and attack them... i mean they didn't choose to be there, they were HIRED to be there and do those "evil" things by who? By the "good guy" who's now protecting the other side :) *any relation with any real wasn't intended* *but hell yeah, we had hundreds of those cases*

Personally i thought it was very understandable why they changed their tune. Ants operate under a hive mind under the queen. What she says goes

Children can not legally sign contracts. Even if it's for anything like yard work. What the man did was illegal and he was praying on a venerable kid. He is a bad guy but the ending was very... weird to me.

I always saw it as a stand up and unite with others, that scene where they were talking about the city and the people in it and how its kind of nature how we can influence each other with good deeds etc.

I wouldn't call Lucas having the other kids band together to stand up to their bully messy morality, it's victims standing up to their abuser. If the bully isn't fed that piece of humble pie early on they'd likely grow up to abuse their spouse or kid. People who act like children all need gentle redirection seem like they've completely forgotten what it was like to be a kid or a least have never experienced bullying, or frequent bullying. Kids are cruel. Like extremely cruel. Morally kids have a lot in common with insects because their brains haven't developed enough to have empathy, or at least not to the level an adult has due to life experience. As for how the ants befriended him, it's still more humane than what our real world governments would do to an alien child, especially if they had as much blood on their hands as Lucas.

The way I saw this movie, the theme to me never really was focused solely on redemption. It was always more a message of the power of numbers and how a weaker force in greater number can help take down colossal threats.

Your entire bit about choice to change and how it can make or break a story is actually a good point that is missed a great deal in modern day media. A good example would be the modern remake of She-Ra versus the original series. In the modern series Adora the main character is literally trapped in her circumstances. Forced by the expectations of those around her, the nature of her powers and every authority figure she can turn to to be She-Ra the Defender of the World. She is outright told in a later episode that she has no choice. This is in stark contrast to the original Adora who always had a choice in the matter. Her introductory episode showed her as a very powerful and skilled warrior even without the magical sword, with it she was nigh unstoppable. She was then given the option of returning to Eternia, the home from which she was stolen from as a baby. She was on her introduction offered a life of luxury and comfort away from a war that she was drafted into as a newborn. To be given everything she wanted in the form of a loving family, more delicious food than she could ever eat, support, understanding and kindness and no one would say a bad word about it. She's just broken through a lifetime of brainwashing to make a stand against evil, there's already a rebellion against the tyrant and she's literally never known her home and family. Yet she turns back and joins the rebellion as both Adora and She-Ra. This difference between the two Adora's one an unwilling slave in the new version against the selfless hero of the old accentuates the differences between the power of She-Ra in the versions as well. In the new version it is a curse, a duty forced upon someone whether they are prepared or fit for the role or not. Where in the original story it's a gift from Greyskull to help a champion in need. The sword in the new version is a symbol of office, something that does not belong to Adora and is merely loaned to her. In the original it belongs to her. Others can carry it, but only she can use it it was meant for her and made for her. Hopefully this has provided some food for thought. Edit to clean up the mess that quickly typing creates.

According to this movies logic, we should forgive the reapers from mass effect, but enslave people doing their jobs and not realizing they hurt people in the process. Good god, that’s pretty screwed up for a kids movie.

I watched ant bully in school when I was a kid, the whole time I felt uncomfortable but I couldn't pinpoint it. I definitely wasn't old enough to understand manipulation, but I think I was old enough to understand that the fact that the ants forgave the kid so quickly and treated him as an equal (in my eyes at the time) was weird. Mostly because I was a petty kid though lol. Also jelly beans don't taste the same??? It's been a while since I've have the but I always thought they did

Some interesting tidbits I learned from the film's wikipedia page: -Lucas is played by Zack Tyler Eisen, who you might know better as Aang from Avatar. This was his only other voice credit aside from the games based on this movie and A:TLA. -The movie was helmed by DNA Productions, which is most well known for making Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. This was only their second film ever made, as they were shut down shortly before the movie released. -Oddly enough, this movie apparently takes place in the suburban side of Las Vegas, of all cities -The film was produced by Tom Hanks, yet he doesn't even provide a cameo -Zack Shada provides the voice for one of the kids, and is also known for being the original voice of Finn in the Adventure Time pilot before being replaced by his brother Jeremy for the series proper.

The framing of this movie review as an animated therapy session is really cool, and I would love to see more like this!

Just fyi but insects seem to produce all the same neurotransmitters as you or I do and worker ants in charge of caring for eggs produce oxytocin while performing a nurturing role for young the same as human mothers do when allowing their babies to suckle so idk but if you really wanna face your own morality: you should probably live with the knowledge that any organism with a nervous system likely feels pain just as acutely as you do, is capable of suffering, and any organism with a brain (such as an ant) has relatively the same neurochemistry as what we hold to be responsible for our own emotions. **the ant oxytocin thing is doubly interesting actually because it's been shown that it's nurse ants which produce oxytocin while caring for eggs- not queen ants. Ant queens do not actually engage in any manner of "child rearing" persay, they just lay the eggs and are uninvolved past that point. Which is why my paragraph above specifies "worker" ants. Just to clear up any confusion on ant biology.

You know the way the exterminator was dealt with was morally messed up plus it actually dooms the colony when you think about it. Stan in his deformed state is actual physical proof that something weird happened and that would draw a whole lot of attention to the ant colony. The ants would either get captured and studied or simply be considered a threat and destroyed.

I keep remembering that this movie definitely existed, and then promptly forget it exists, only to be reminded again. Great quality work as always! I love the framing of the discussion as a ramble in a psychiatrist's office. Also very cultured with Island of Giant Insects.

Was there a reason they couldn't just make the main character grow to full size and tell the exterminator that he didn't want his services after all? But the exterminator is a businessman, and movie-makers hate those (unless they're artists, as they view themselves to be). Worse, he's a small businessman, which means he's not donating money to support their preferred causes. Small businessmen of course can't be moral entities, and deserve any abuse they get.
