"Let the poor people live like poor people". Huh? Whuchu talking bout, Willis??? The literal translation was "let them eat brioche", and brioche DEFINITELY was not cheap back in the day. It was/is made with high-quality flour enriched with eggs and butter, and was most certainly considered a luxury item that the poor peasants could rarely afford, if at all. The whole point of that saying was to imply how out of touch the aristocracy was. Fun fact: Just compared the prices at my local shop. 500 grams of Brioche is £3.85, and 800 grams of white bread is a measly 75 pence! Looks like brioche is still a luxury item! LOL
@Iflie3 ай бұрын
Plus Marie Antionette never said it, it was from a story about a spoiled princess. Nor do I think this tiktokker said it about palestine.
@lexfacitregem3 ай бұрын
@@Iflie That's exactly right! That line was actually taken from Jean-Jacques Rousseau's "Confessions," and he attributed it to "great princess", which obviously wasn't Marie, as the book was published in 1782, and Marie was born in 1755. LOL I would hope that most people already know this, though! Fingers crossed!

@@lexfacitregem Yeah I've never heard anything about cake meaning that they should eat to their station. It was a time with a lot of starving and famines, you wouldn't say starving is proper for the poor just because the harvest failed again. Potatoes saved so many people.

Very much agree. It is something that should never be forgiven nor forgotten. Child sexualization in any way shape or form is never okay in any degree. And the absolute disgraceful behaviors of many of the top people from Balenciaga and those associated with them should still very much be on blast. As an Aussie I am very disappointed in Ms. Kidman. I like her and her husband a great deal and expected better from her. @badnewsbeca , thank you for pointing this out. It needs to be called out at every turn again and again. Let us not allow them to sweep this under the proverbial carpet.

I looovveeee the skits 🖤 & The direct translation is "let them eat Brioche" a type of egg-dipped bread, I believe (Wendy's uses Brioche buns for some of their sandwiches, I'm sure they aren't alone). But in this context; she was addressing a bread shortage and was actually suggesting bakeries sell brioche *at the same price* as ppl would typically get bread. I do love history, I'm not super into French history (I'm really a BCE-kinda girl, so not an expert on any modern nation) no disrespect to the French lol. From what I understand tho, Marie Antoinette has been heavily demonized partially because of the political climate at the time. A lot of modern historians will mention that the French public was fed up and struggling for quite some time, and it may not even have mattered *who* was on the throne; they were ready for a Revolution.

The Met Gala videos have been one of the chillest videos I've seen on your channel. I enjoyed it a lot. I have opinions on the outfits from both videos... I believe Elle Fanning, Emma Chamberlain, Ashley Graham killed the Met Gala this year Donald Glover looked like Don King without the crazy hair. It looked like he was dressing up for church. I love Kim Kardashian's outfit but I'm actually worried about her. Again, I believe Elle Fanning did her homework with not only the theme but the slaying the Met Gala. Haley Bailey gave me Midsommer vibes. I know this was not mentioned in both videos, but Camila Cabello holding a block of ice....that was on another level. I also enjoyed the skits as well. I'm surprised you and your "twin" didn't kill each other...yet

I love you Julia, but I need to clear this up. To make sure I got it right, I quoted _Wikipedia:_ _""Let them eat cake" is the traditional translation of the French phrase "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche",[1] said to have been spoken in the 18th century by "a great princess" upon being told that the peasants had no bread. The French phrase mentions brioche, a bread enriched with butter and eggs, considered a luxury food. The quote is taken to reflect either the princess's frivolous disregard for the starving peasants or her poor understanding of their plight. Although the phrase is conventionally attributed to Marie Antoinette, it can actually be traced back to Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions in 1765, 24 years prior to the French Revolution, and when Antoinette was nine years old and had never been to France. The quote was only attributed to her decades after her death, and historians do not believe that she said it."_ So, in short, your interpretation of the quote is actually the opposite of its intent. Back then, cake was considered an extremely luxurious food, so her statement was a tone-deaf dismissal of their plight.

So cake was actually a luxury food item that most people couldnt afford. Eggs and butter were already a rather pricey food item on their own, but SUGAR? Forget about it. No commoner was getting their hands on enough sugar to bake a cake. So when Marie Antoinette was (falsely) quoted as saying, "Then let them eat cake!" when told the people had no bread to eat, it was like a Kardashian saying, "Just hire a private chef!" when you tell them theres no food in your fridge.

That person in your last video with the sand dress was dressed as the sands of time. She was carrying an hourglass. In case nobody pointed that out. I have no idea who half of those people were. My understanding of "let them eat cake" was that was the dregs left in cooking containers after the food was removed. Basically stating they could eat what they could scrape out of pots or whatever the French liked to cook in. I thought some of us weren't allowed to comment, because we didn't agree with you politically? Hmmmmm. "Get educated" is what some of us on our side would like to state to your side.
@nivision3 ай бұрын
no. the correct translation would actually be "let them eat brioche", which is a much richer cakelike bread made with lots of eggs and butter. it was supposed to be commentary on how out of touch the aristocracy was; not understanding famine often being more an economic problem than an availability issue. but Antoinette didn't say it regardless, and it was likely entirely made up.
