Pak Mei, also written as Bak Mei or Pai Mei, was often portrayed as the villain in Kung Fu films - the enemy of Shaolin. There is actually a style named after him, which finds its origins in the Hakka people of Southern China. In this episode, we meet with Master Daniel Lai, who is a direct inheritor of the art, to find out more.

Once upon a time I over heard Pak Mei tell someone from the Qing government, Pak Mei said, " I've already killed the head priest, so don't worry about it. The disciples are well aware of the fact that my Kung Fu is unbeatable. So you just keep searching for them. You'll capture them all in the end." All your documentaries are great, keep up the good work. No Kung Fu, No Life.

Fascinating. The body is solid like tree trunk but the arms like flexible branches, pulled back, ready to snap back at the opponent.

Straightening out the spine by trucking in the chin (smoothing the cervical spine) and tucking under the tail (flat lumbar spine) prevents the whiplash effect being effective and also allows movement of the legs without large movement of the upper torso allowing for sweeps and unifies the body. Quite similar to tai chi chuan

@@Saviohno in my limited exposure to both styles, i think there's similarities between the posture and usage of the spine, posture of the arms, and the internal quality of many of the strikes.

@2:19 I may be wrong but I get a sense that there is a spiral energy or momentum when ht takes the hit. Instead of taking force by force heès dsappating and spiralling that engergy through into his own punch.
@Saviohno
@Saviohno 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, we try not to take force by force, and the way we block actually hurts the person attacking by using our entire structure to take the hit, like the car hitting the tree analogy my sifu made in episode one. By receiving the strike with the right structure, the force dissipates into the ground. If they strike while their structure is compromised and our structure is intact, their structure is damaged (kind of like the Sifu game)

@@Saviohno Ah cool, your Sifu's analogy in the video that it is like a spring is also what I've heard teachers of Chow Gar say, but I never really understood it until watching this video and reading your own explanation here. Excellent Job on the coverage of the Bak Mei Pai. I especially liked this explanation of of "Ton Toe" method ( Suck and Spit) which is to Absorb your opponents technique, and the Throw Out a technique at/to your opponent. In the Chin Yuk Jeun ( Dean Chin) branch of the Jow Ga here in the States we also employ this method but from a Side/Bladed position, as our Sifu learned Bak Mei from an uncle in the Chin Family. Looking forward to seeing the Lung Ying Kuen episode ‼️🤣🤣🤣

When he talks about the form Sap Ji Kuen Lai Sifu says something that sounds like "lei ga". Was he by any chance talking about the southern style commonly referred to as Li Gar?

@@MonkeyStealsPeach It's interesting because in Choy Li Fut we have a Sap ji Kuen. The forms are very different so they're probably not related (though I did catch a few similar moves). That said Choy Lee Fut also claims to be a Shaolin descendant and is related to Li Gar. I don't know Cantonese so I might've heard wrong but it would be an interesting connection.

Haha, yeah fortunately Lai Sifu has a great sense of humor, good thing because he's a dangerous man! As we said in the video, we can't do Kung Fu without hitting and getting hit sometimes, though of course we weren't trying to hurt each other (If he was trying I wouldn't be here typing this) But I really respect him a lot, that's for sure. He's not my father, but he treats me like his own son.

The thing I’ve noticed with these kung fu styles is they train against punches that ppl do not throw Why would he be throwing his fist that way across him? Why would someone be punching while stepping with the same leg they are punching with? MMA practitioners in China have been silenced by the govt for embarrassing king fu masters in fights and easily defeating these styles It looks cool but it is not practical
