I had only one training experience in Taiwan in 2009. It was very useful and great, but with a lot of strange attitudes and feelings. We stayed only with students and relatives of the masters, but only masters could teach us new things. Also, it's impossibile to separate the philosophy of martial arts from the religious point of view, expecially in supersticious aspects. It was hard to understand that by some of us.😊❤

I've watched about 10 travel videos of foreign visiting the Terracotta Warriors, and it's a pity they all missed the Qin bronze chariot. In my opinion, the Mausoleum Museum of Bronze Chariots and Horses is the highlight here, showcasing the pinnacle of bronze craftsmanship. It seems that only a Sinology enthusiast like you, with enough background knowledge, would be willing to explore it. Their losses.

That One Hater in the Comments: This wouldn't work in MMA!🤬 (Its the most cliche(&cringe) thing you can say on a gung-fu video lol) Me: uhhhhh....not everyone who wants to defend themselves, wants to work in the MMA(where its more of a business, than an art). And most MMA fighters are only fit for an upcoming match. Too much pressure to meet a certain weight class, its no wonder they wanna let loose when that match is finally over with. Traditional arts is not a tournament-prep session, its a lifestyle. Being healthy and in shape, is the byproduct of daily training. Which facilitates longevity Yeah, Im projecting😊 Traditional martial arts has never lost its honor, and respect, as far as Im concerned (despite what BudLight drinking American fans think lol) 🎉Team Traditional Martial Arts, over hear🎉

I lived in Taipei Taiwan for over three years and I was exposed to a lot of good martial arts there especially praying mantis. Ironically, some of that traditional praying mantis still exists in mainland China. The only problem is it is difficult to find but when you do, it is awesome And it almost matches Taiwan praying mantis as well. The sad thing about mainland. China is most of the martial arts that you will see is contemporary wushu

@@MonkeyStealsPeach hmm, I heard of the mercury rivers and basically that the whole tomb was supposed to be made as sort of 3D map of the empire so he can rule after death, not sure how much of it is the truth tho I wonder when they're going to open it and get inside And also, like, we have all those new tech, they really can't see underground/through the walls to see if it's safe or not?

Thank you Will for this. To see the parts on 太祖拳 Taizu Quan is amazing. I am a descendent of the royal family of the Southern Song dynasty, the Chiu (Zhao) clan ethnicity 趙氏族. But I thought our survivors were only and exclusively in Toishan Province where the royal borough is located. It's also a bit strange to hear about palace guards in Quanzhou since there was a huge ordeal in Quanzhou/Fujian where we fled from the North in Hangzhou to go find boats to flee the ensuing Mongol army and assassins. I will double check the primary sources later but from memory, according to our history books, they got (commandeered) a number of boats from a muslim merchant. At that point there were about 200,000 royal servants from the Southern palace accompanying the surviving boy emperors. Maybe not of all them could fit on the boats so they stayed behind and such men and the defensive arts lasted until now. It does however make sense since the population in Toishan 台山 and Sze Jup 四邑 when I check historic databases although it found its feet and became relatively prosperous it was not nearly as ginormous as a Chinese establishment should and could be, compared to regional areas around Guangzhou. There also are little to no defensive fortification as you see in the architecture in the older city of Fujian. Also in each of the old villages while there is a huge focus on ancestral halls 祠堂, zupu 族普 or jiapu 家谱 , and preservation of genealogical lineages, I have YET to come across a kung fu style or academy, which is eerily strange. The villages networks there like libraries. If someone reading here knows, I would be very much obliged. Peace and God bless

Thank you Will (and friends) for sharing your travels and experience to the world. You're the Marco Polo's of kung fu! He too was in Quanzhou when it was once a glorious place! You're so fortunate. Many Overseas Chinese like myself only get to hear of such places from stories. It's also great seeing a 鬼佬 especially a Briton who's so respectful of Chinese culture, well mannered and well spoken, literate in Chinese, informed in Chinese history, even understanding the nuances in our history! Your objectivity/impartiality is also fair and honest, not at all exaggerating. I'm sure the old men really appreciated your visit since much of the younger generations are in the diaspora (heaps of Fujianese are in New York, and some here in Sydney) and unlikely to return since their kids prefer living in the West. Many Chinese also idolise kung fu elevating it to a supernatural ability which is superstitious nonsense, while Westerners in general either mock it, denigrate it, or fetishise it, but you spoke well at the Southern Shaolin temple. The fact is that there is a degree of "mythology" in certain much of our stories since most of the key witnesses died and the new generation has fragments of oral history to piece together. With dynastic failures, multiple rebellions, revolutions, formation of secret societies, government persecution and scapegoating of minority groups, families and clans from former dynasties escaping assassins, are the major issues for us Chinese since even the rule of Emperor Qin Shi Huang 2nd century BC, or the Mongolian Yuan dynasty 13th century AD, to the Qing Dynasty, and CCP currently. Our history is extremely dramatic and complex, and kung fu since the earliest stories of "wrestling" were always a means to an end, for self-defence and survival. Later political reform, violent rebellions, even piracy and triad activity, are ultimately desperate acts for desperate times, when we just want our land and homes back, to not be refugees or prisoners within our own country, to have a rightful and just king/government, a Lord, and God, proper places of worship, and for the country to be at peace and harmony, with the blessing of Heaven. What you guys saw with old men inside practicing their own independent style of kung fu reflects also how broken and degenerate society got in the last few hundred years. "Bandits" were everywhere and nobody trusted their neighbours, hence houses were built in terrace rows, like fortresses with high walls, steel gates, and no big windows. The only way in was through the "sky well" open terraces. People stooped as low as possible to survive, so for such masters to teach foreigners kung fu, even show your personal homes, bedrooms, personal belongings and treasures, they practically gave you a share of their inheritance, which would have only traditionally would have gone to their sons, grandsons, and servants. Keep up the good content. If you're a reader you might want to check our Arthur Henderson Smith's book Chinese Characteristics 1890. It's a scarily accurate assessment. Peace and blessings

@@MonkeyStealsPeach You're very welcome. Yes, our family has been in Sydney for several generations. My family are Cantonese, Toishan, and Hakka speaking though, not Fujian. Are you aware of the 四邑 sze jup or 四邑方言 influences in Sydney? The "Chinese gold mining" era here arrived during the times turmoil in your kung fu history research. When I saw 五祖先師 it was like what is that? or who are these "5 ancestors" or "5 saints", 五大祖先? (I have some ideas - theological and historical, not what you may be expecting) Then I remembered I also did 五祖拳, haha! Which was then marketed on cheap pamphlets in English as "Wu Chu" which sounds way too alike "Wushu"! So most ABCs who are introduced to this in English, with classes taught in English, and who can't read or understand Chinese likely would never realise that they learnt 五大祖先拳, let alone it's connection to the other styles you found! And back in the early 00s the master and students didn't boast about these things!

The poignant part of these videos for me are the flashes of quotidian contemporary Chinese people living their lives amongst the scenery, because this is a document of real life in China and a beautiful tonic to all the negative stereotypes and China bashing in the Western media as the USA ramps up the new cold-war towards a hot-war with China. China is not the enemy of the people as Western elites would have us believe.
