In a random inspection of my project fleet I discovered that the Austin Metro is low on coolant! That needs to be fixed...

Oh i had loads of metros, i bought mot failures and repaired them, also stolen ones and engine gearbox swaps…as for rust it was mostly floor panels and front jacking points i ended up welding. These were my poor mans diy projects.

To think these cars were everywhere back in the 80s, now you don't see them. I saw one for sale this summer by the side of the road in Cornwall. It was in great condition and I actually considered putting in an offer.🤔

They came from the factory that colour. Something to do with factory identification. That nasty crud around the thermostat housing just needs a kettle full of boiling water over it.

Often the case with jubilee clips, they either let go over time, or they cut through the hose because they're cheaply stamped metal with sharp edges, resulting in them causing more leaks than they stop...

Looking great with the clean engine bay - sometimes you get lucky with an easy fix! Still amazes me to see how lazy they were when they made this. Even the hood latch/lock is the same as the mini!

Its so similar to the mini.... But one good thing was they moved the radiator to the front! :D

Why reinvent stuff if you've got parts on the shelf that work? Bear in mind that this was meant to be an affordable little car, so very sensible to keep development costs down to a minimum.

@@topspoke as a mechanical engineer (and Mini owner) I am fully aware of the reasoning behind why they did what they did. The mini just seems ancient compared to the metro, so it was meant more in the way that it’s funny to see that not much has changed except for the bodywork :)

Try biltemas smådelsrens soap. It is fantastic at cleaning of old oil and stuff on old lathes and milling machines. It is Cheaper than solvents, and you can put it in their pressurised DIY spraycan 🙂.

Great little cars and although I love mini's the metro was a much better motorway car car and still great fun to drive round country lanes. The 1.3 was also quite quick .keep up the good work

I think you're correct on the colour of the engine, yellow blocks were 998cc, the red blocks 1275, I can't remember what colour my 1100cc Mini was though? That pressure test kit looks very handy to have, look forward to the next update

In UK now half decent Metros all specs go for reasonable money. MG and Turbo versions much, much more. Twenty years ago Brits used to dump their Metros and lots of other worthless cars at the road side for the taxpayers to clear away. Never see that now. Your example appears to be basically a sound one and worth the TLC you devote to it.

Nice easy fix this time! Can I ask a favor, I have a carburettor that is, supposedly, originaly off one of those cars, a HIF 38, (code FZX 1414), and i'm drawing an intake manifold to adapt it to a FIAT engine (100 GL) , and I'm trying to find out what is the correct inclination of the carburettor with the horizontal. If you could somehow measure the slope of the carb it would help a lot. Thanks in advance, see you in the next one. ;)
