Күн бұрын

In this episode, Jay compares the Hilleberg Akto and Soulto tents. In less than 4 weeks Jay leaves on a solo backcountry hunt and both these tents provide a different value proposition. While the akto is lighter the soulo has more headroom. After countless hours reading online reviews Jay decided the only sensible option was to buy both, set them up, and decide for himself.

I had both tents. With the AKTO , you can unclip part of the inner in the morning to give yoursself more headroom to make coffee. With the soulo , you have plenty of room inside the tent opposite the vestibule to stash stuff.

Yeah good points. You can unclip a corner of the soulo if you want more vestibule space for gear as well

Great Video. Your ending summary to the questions are epic and to the point. Well done. I’ve started on a new journey in Alpine adventure. Did my first trip on Mount Baker. We camped on 9 feet of snow and had North Face Expedition tents in the group. I’m building my own kit for the next one. As you said - “F -It”. 👌🏾

Absolutely the best comparison of the two tents I've seen so far. I also had to choose between this both, I decided for the Akto, because I just wanna sleep inside after a long day of either hiking, mountaineering or cycling and it's perfect for that. I'm a little bit smaller than you, but it's also not possible for me to sit upright inside without unclipping the inner. But again, it was defintely the right choice for me. Thumbs up 👍my Canadian friend, Cheers and atb from the UK, Hal

Just spend Three weeks sleeping in the Soulo on Corsica with all my gear inside the vestibule. I'm 180cm. I did place the tent in forests, on top of mountains, near lakes, near rivers and on beaches with 4 meter waves. One location had only some small bushes for shadow and i pitched the tent inide them, one location had no trees just open field with 40°C, And one day there was a nasty thunderstorm with hail and very high windspeeds ( other QUECHUA tents got blown away or flooded and many Tarps ripped in half). It always felt cosy inside, and if you need a bigger vestibule you can just unzip the inner tent on the bottom ;) Amazing Tent, easely a 10/10 and i alredy used it this winter in the swiss alps with lots and lots of snowfall. Cheers

i have the Soulo It vents better than my mates Akto. I have short guy lines on the foot end of the outer shell which i lift slightly in low wind and high moisture camps. It makes a massive difference to the air flow. I have been tent bound in bad weather and found it big enough to stay in for the day. I take down the inner liner when i am cooking for more space. I love the tent. My other tent is a Tarra. I am in the north of Scotland where the weather changes by the hour. I have been camping for 40 years this summer. I started off with a free hand me down which did until i really got into it. I hate tunnel tents and ridge tents. Free standing is the only way to go. Personal preference. I find the best way to assemble the poles is RED WHITE BLUE. Cheers

The tarra is a tunnel, a geodesic tunnel. Got one after I had a wildcountry tent flattened in the cairngorms in 80mph winds. Wildcountry said that no tent could survive that. Hilleberg on the other hand reconned that the tarra can survive anything on the planet which I can believe as super strong.

Thanks for this Jay. Incidentally the figures you quote are for area not volume, and the area is at ground level. With its steep sides the Soulo’s volume must be a lot more. I’m thinking of getting a Soulo for very windy locations. I already have an Unna which I love - more spacious and more headroom than either of these, and does have a small vestibule despite what Hilleberg say - but difficult to pitch when the wind exceeds 25mph. The Soulo’s clip system on the poles enables it to be erected piecemeal and guyed incrementally which makes a huge difference in gale force winds which we get a lot on mountains in Wales!

I wanted the BL soulo but ended up getting the RL once I buy a 10mm pole it’s just as sturdy and it’ll never leak anyway. There’s enough room to double pole two 9mm poles in the akto if that’s the option your in.

Many thanks for the video! For quite a while I have been looking at these HB tents, tried them in stores, checking headroom etc, now I am getting more and more confident I will finally choose the old construction Nallo 2, if tall one can sleep diagonally, good headroom, me plus a dog or smaller person fits fine! Thanks Jay for interesting comparison. The Akto may feel longer thanks to the end walls leaning outwards while the Soulo goes inwards. Some said that at sleeping pad height, the difference was almost 10 cm to the advantage of the Akto. Soulo is about 3 inches taller With 3 poles and its shape, it handles snow much better than the Akto. To strengthen the Akto, someone recommended to buy the 10 mm pole for a Nammatj 2. Exactly the same length. Ventilation wise, the Akto has openable outer end walls to ensure better air flow. However, in the Suolo you can open the entire inner tent wall and have a mosquito net. In the Akto the mosquito net covers only the top part of the door. I own an Akto tent and have used it for some 14 nights and I like it, but it's not perfect. The inner tent height is a concern as I'm about the same size as you with a bit longer torso.. In addition I just bought a Nallo 2 for space that I'll try later this year. I'm considering I tent for longer solo hike where the weather can be unpredictable to say the least and wind stability is required. In that sense the Soulo is of interest as it's free standing and it's one of the tallest tents in the Hilleberg family. If I need the lightest weight only, I might add an Enan instead. Lars

Hello ! That's my choice too : Soulo + Enan. I've hiked with an Akto for 10 years, and I would certainly keep it if I would keep only one tent. But Soulo is a better solution in winter and in harsh conditions (wind, snow), and Enan a better one in summer (as it's a much lighter, yet surprisingly solid and reliable tent). Greetings from France !

I am 6‘6 and I have no problems with the akto, it‘s longer and wider than the soulo, and I can still sit in the tent. Not in the absolute upright position but it‘s no problem. The absolute headspace in the soulo in fact is not even an inch more, but ok, it is a wider headspace than the akto. The venting in the akto ist much better, I think in the soulo with only one very tiny ventilation triangle it can be a serious problem. I own the tarp 5 from hilleberg and can create an additional protected area above the entrance, and this setup is still nearly one pound lighter than the soulo. The only advances of the soulo that I see is the free standing option and it can stand a lot more snowfall. But you still have to peg it down in decent winds. Oh btw, I just need 5 min for the akto to setup, while the soulo is more around 8-10 min. But hey, no matter what Hilleberg tent you chose, they are all really great (I also own the Staika) and sturdy. Have a great time with the soulo. Hope you‘re giving us an update on your experiences with ist. Regards, Nic

I've heard that the footprint helps with condensation, i've just ordered one for my Allak 2. I mean If im spending £1100 on a tent i might as well protect it as much as I can as the bottom is going to take some abuse over the years.
@MindfulHunter
@MindfulHunter 2 жыл бұрын
It definitely can't hurt. The two biggest contributors I have found are ambient humidity and how wet you are when you climb in. I usually use my sleeping bag to dry me out at night and that results in some unavoidable condensation.

I still prefer the Hilleberg Unna to the Soulo because of the bigger inner and the variable vestibule. An alternative to the Akto is the Nordisk Svalbard. Also a tunnel tent with similar footprint and weight and heavy durable materials that can easily accomodate guys up to 6'4.
@MindfulHunter
@MindfulHunter 3 жыл бұрын
I think the Unna is a super interesting option. I think the unna with an ultralight Dyneema tarp for a larger vestibule is the best of both worlds. There’s so much snow where I go I need a bigger vestibule. I’m even considering adding a second tarp to my soulo for this year.

Dude you need Hilleberg Nallo 2. Strong, two person tent, high ceiling, tons of space. You can take your wife with you, or your child, or your dog on the trip. Nallo weighs like Soulo - 2 kg. You can also buy a footprint and an inner mesh tent. This is a super offer. And if you want an even stronger tent, there's the Nammatj 2. Black label tent with an extra 300 gr. weight. Still not a heavy, spacious tent with which you can even atack the mountains.

I’ve got both tents. I’m only 5ft6 180lbs and I still don’t like the akto. The reason I say that is I own both do I compare the akto to the soulo. If the akto is compared with tents the same shape then it’s an A lister tent. The soulo is only two toggles away from making the vestibule larger “whilst” cooking then closes the inner back out for sleeping. My akto isn’t getting sold it’s now the tent I will loan to a friend if they wanna try winter camping in Scotland with me. You’ll need ear plugs because the zips are noisy when it’s windy and eye mask because when sun rises at 4am it’s like a torch being turned on. For lesser budgets and not snow you can’t go wrong with a MSR elixir1 guys. What a tent!

Because you have access to wood for the hunt and are concerned with footprint size....maybe this would be a great hunt for a supertarp if you were interested in going floorless. I have the supertarp and I picked up a Megatarp last year for a little more space and the option to go with the wife. I know you have the megatarp but cant remember if you ran a supertarp at one point or not. That atko would be a no-go for me even at 5 8. I want to be able to at least sit up comfortably in the case of a long tent sit during bad weather. Of the two, I totally agree with your choice of the soulo. I also think the soulo will handle snow loads a bit better from just looking at both designs. The atko would probably sag right into your face once it got some snow sitting on it. Id be curious to hear your thoughts about the super tarp idea as well if you have used one...and how it integrates into your decision making process for this upcoming hunt. Great stuff man...thx!
@MindfulHunter
@MindfulHunter 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve never run the super tarp. It’s a sweet shelter though. Due to how early it’s gonna get dark and the likelihood of getting weathered in I wanted something I could realistically spend some time in. Also, a floored shelter, especially a dual walled hille offers a significant increase in warmth. I’d go floorless in similar conditions but only with a stove. And likely only with a group where we could rock a tipi/sawtooth etc.

Hi from Norway .What do you think about space for a cold pit in Soulo. And use of multifuel in the tent for heating and cooking.
@MindfulHunter
@MindfulHunter 3 жыл бұрын
I don't have any experience with cold pits so can't comment. I did cook in the vestibule and made coffee in the mornings and it heated the tent up very fast. Had to watch boiling water though as it would condensate the tent immediately. Also, for obvious reasons I do not recommend using sources of flame inside a tent ;)
@SYAntonella
@SYAntonella 3 жыл бұрын
@@MindfulHunter The theory behind cold pits is that you push the cold air into the pit, because cold air is heavier than warm. And with a cold pit in the snow you get a nice place to sit. Use of heat in the tent must only be used under supervision. Easy to fall asleep with the multifuel heater burning. The use of multifuel is much better than for example propane as it does not emit moisture. Widely used by Norway`s, and perhaps the world's most experienced artic Explorer Børge Ausland.
